1 T hese are the words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.

¶ Palabras del Predicador, hijo de David, rey en Jerusalén.

2 “ It is of no use,” says the Preacher. “It is of no use! All is for nothing.”

Vanidad de vanidades, dijo el Predicador; vanidad de vanidades, todo es vanidad.

3 W hat does a man get for all his work which he does under the sun?

¿Qué provecho tiene el hombre de todo su trabajo con que se afana debajo del sol?

4 P eople die and people are born, but the earth stays forever.

¶ Generación va, y generación viene; mas la tierra siempre permanece.

5 T he sun rises and the sun sets, and travels in a hurry to the place where it rises.

Y sale el sol, y se pone el sol, y con deseo retorna a su lugar donde vuelve a nacer.

6 T he wind blows to the south and goes around to the north. It goes around and around, and returns again on its way.

El viento va al mediodía, y rodea al norte; va rodeando de continuo, y por sus rodeos vuelve el viento de nuevo hasta completar su ciclo.

7 A ll the rivers flow into the sea, yet the sea is not full. And they return again to the place from which the rivers flow.

Los ríos todos van al mar, y el mar no se llena; al lugar de donde los ríos vinieron, allí vuelven para correr de nuevo.

8 A ll things are tiring. Man is not able to tell about them. The eye never has enough to see, and the ear is never filled with what it hears.

Todas las cosas andan en trabajo más de lo que el hombre pueda decir; los ojos nunca se sacian de ver, ni los oídos de oír.

9 W hat has been is what will be. And what has been done is what will be done. So there is nothing new under the sun.

¶ ¿Qué es lo que fue? Lo mismo que será. ¿Qué es lo que ha sido hecho? Lo mismo que se hará; y nada hay nuevo debajo del sol.

10 I s there anything of which one might say, “See, this is new”? It has already been there since long before us.

¿Hay algo de que se pueda decir: He aquí esto es nuevo? Ya fue en los siglos que nos han precedido.

11 N o one remembers the things that happened before. And no one will remember the things that will happen in the future among those who will come later. Looking for Wisdom Is like Trying to Catch the Wind

No hay memoria de los primeros, ni tampoco de los postreros habrá memoria en los que serán después.

12 I , the Preacher, have been king over Israel in Jerusalem.

¶ Yo el Predicador fui rey sobre Israel en Jerusalén.

13 A nd I set my mind to look for wisdom to learn about all that has been done under heaven. It is a hard work which God has given to the sons of men to be troubled with.

Y di mi corazón a inquirir y buscar con sabiduría sobre todo lo que se hace debajo del cielo (este penoso trabajo dio Dios a los hijos de los hombres, en que se ocupen).

14 I have seen all the works which have been done under the sun. And see, it is all for nothing. It is like trying to catch the wind.

Yo miré todas las obras que se hacen debajo del sol; y he aquí, todo ello es vanidad y aflicción de espíritu.

15 W hat is not straight cannot be made straight. What is not there cannot be numbered.

Lo torcido no se puede enderezar; y lo falto no puede contarse.

16 I said to myself, “I have received more wisdom than all who were over Jerusalem before me. My mind has seen much wisdom and much learning.”

Hablé yo con mi corazón, diciendo: He aquí yo me he engrandecido, y he crecido en sabiduría sobre todos los que fueron antes de mí en Jerusalén; y mi corazón ha percibido mucha sabiduría y ciencia.

17 A nd I set my mind to know wisdom and to know what is crazy and foolish. I saw that this also is like trying to catch the wind.

Y di mi corazón a conocer la sabiduría, y la ciencia; y las locuras y los desvaríos conocí al fin que aun esto era aflicción de espíritu.

18 B ecause in much wisdom there is much trouble. And he who gets much learning gets much sorrow.

Porque en la mucha sabiduría hay mucha tristeza; y quien añade ciencia, añade dolor.
