1 D avid a numărat oştirea care se afla cu el şi a numit căpetenii peste mii şi căpetenii peste sute.

Then David numbered the people who were with him and set over them commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds.

2 A pus o treime din oştire sub comanda lui Ioab, o altă treime sub comanda lui Abişai, fiul Ţeruiei şi fratele lui Ioab, iar cealaltă treime a pus-o sub comanda ghititului Itai. Apoi le-a zis oamenilor: – Bineînţeles că voi veni şi eu cu voi.

David sent the people out, one third under the command of Joab, one third under the command of Abishai the son of Zeruiah, Joab’s brother, and one third under the command of Ittai the Gittite. And the king said to the people, “I myself will surely go out with you also.”

3 – Să nu ieşi! i-au răspuns cei din oştire. Dacă noi vom fugi, duşmanilor nu le va păsa atât de mult de noi şi chiar dacă jumătate dintre noi ar muri, nici chiar atunci nu le va păsa de noi. Tu însă faci cât zece mii dintre noi. Prin urmare, ar fi mai bine să ne sprijini din cetate.

But the people said, “ You should not go out; for if we indeed flee, they will not care about us; even if half of us die, they will not care about us. But you are worth ten thousand of us; therefore now it is better that you be ready to help us from the city.”

4 – Voi face cum credeţi voi că este mai bine, le-a răspuns regele. Apoi regele a stat lângă poartă, în timp ce toată oştirea ieşea cu sutele şi miile.

Then the king said to them, “Whatever seems best to you I will do.” So the king stood beside the gate, and all the people went out by hundreds and thousands.

5 R egele le-a poruncit lui Ioab, lui Abişai şi lui Itai: „De dragul meu, purtaţi-vă blând cu tânărul Absalom!“ Şi întreaga oştire a auzit această poruncă, pe care regele a dat-o fiecărui conducător cu privire la Absalom.

The king charged Joab and Abishai and Ittai, saying, “ Deal gently for my sake with the young man Absalom.” And all the people heard when the king charged all the commanders concerning Absalom.

6 O ştirea a ieşit în câmp ca să lupte împotriva lui Israel, iar lupta s-a dat în pădurea lui Efraim.

Then the people went out into the field against Israel, and the battle took place in the forest of Ephraim.

7 O ştirea lui Israel a fost învinsă acolo de slujitorii lui David. A avut loc acolo un mare măcel în acea zi – douăzeci de mii de oameni au fost ucişi.

The people of Israel were defeated there before the servants of David, and the slaughter there that day was great, 20, 000 men.

8 L upta s-a întins pe întreg teritoriul şi în ziua aceea, pădurea a mistuit mai mulţi oameni decât a mistuit sabia.

For the battle there was spread over the whole countryside, and the forest devoured more people that day than the sword devoured.

9 A bsalom, călare pe un catâr, s-a pomenit deodată în faţa slujitorilor lui David. Încercând să scape, a intrat cu catârul pe sub ramurile încâlcite ale unui stejar mare. Capul lui Absalom s-a prins însă între ramurile stejarului şi el a rămas astfel atârnat între cer şi pământ, în timp ce catârul său a plecat mai departe.

Now Absalom happened to meet the servants of David. For Absalom was riding on his mule, and the mule went under the thick branches of a great oak. And his head caught fast in the oak, so he was left hanging between heaven and earth, while the mule that was under him kept going.

10 U nul dintre luptători a văzut acest lucru şi i-a spus lui Ioab: – L-am văzut pe Absalom, atârnând de un stejar.

When a certain man saw it, he told Joab and said, “Behold, I saw Absalom hanging in an oak.”

11 – Cum? L-ai văzut? Atunci de ce nu l-ai ucis acolo, pe loc? l-a întrebat Ioab. Ţi-aş fi dat zece şecheli de argint şi o cingătoare.

Then Joab said to the man who had told him, “Now behold, you saw him! Why then did you not strike him there to the ground? And I would have given you ten pieces of silver and a belt.”

12 – Chiar dacă aş cântări în mâna mea o mie de şecheli de argint, n-aş ridica mâna împotriva fiului regelui, i-a răspuns omul acela lui Ioab. Căci în auzul nostru v-a poruncit regele atât ţie, cât şi lui Abişai şi lui Itai, să aveţi grijă să nu i se întâmple vreun rău tânărului Absalom.

The man said to Joab, “Even if I should receive a thousand pieces of silver in my hand, I would not put out my hand against the king’s son; for in our hearing the king charged you and Abishai and Ittai, saying, ‘ Protect for me the young man Absalom!’

13 D acă l-aş fi ucis mişeleşte, acest lucru n-ar fi rămas necunoscut de către rege iar tu nu mi-ai fi luat apărarea.

Otherwise, if I had dealt treacherously against his life (and there is nothing hidden from the king), then you yourself would have stood aloof.”

14 – Nu am timp de pierdut cu tine, i-a răspuns Ioab. A luat trei suliţe şi le-a înfipt în pieptul lui Absalom, în timp ce acesta era încă viu, prins între ramurile stejarului.

Then Joab said, “I will not waste time here with you.” So he took three spears in his hand and thrust them through the heart of Absalom while he was yet alive in the midst of the oak.

15 Z ece tineri, care duceau armele lui Ioab, l-au înconjurat după aceea pe Absalom, l-au lovit şi l-au omorât.

And ten young men who carried Joab’s armor gathered around and struck Absalom and killed him.

16 I oab a suflat apoi din corn şi oştirea s-a întors de la urmărirea israeliţilor, chemată fiind de Ioab.

Then Joab blew the trumpet, and the people returned from pursuing Israel, for Joab restrained the people.

17 L -au luat pe Absalom, l-au aruncat în pădure, într-o groapă mare, şi au aruncat peste el un morman foarte mare de pietre. Israeliţii au fugit fiecare acasă.

They took Absalom and cast him into a deep pit in the forest and erected over him a very great heap of stones. And all Israel fled, each to his tent.

18 P e când trăia, Absalom îşi ridicase un monument în Valea Regelui, pentru că nu avea nici un fiu care să-i poarte mai departe amintirea numelui. A dat monumentului propriul său nume şi, chiar până în ziua de astăzi, acesta se numeşte „Monumentul lui Absalom“. Vestea morţii lui Absalom

Now Absalom in his lifetime had taken and set up for himself a pillar which is in the King’s Valley, for he said, “ I have no son to preserve my name.” So he named the pillar after his own name, and it is called Absalom’s Monument to this day. David Is Grief-stricken

19 A himaaţ, fiul lui Ţadok, i-a zis lui Ioab: – Lasă-mă să alerg şi să-i duc regelui vestea cea bună că Domnul l-a izbăvit din mâna duşmanilor săi.

Then Ahimaaz the son of Zadok said, “Please let me run and bring the king news that the Lord has freed him from the hand of his enemies.”

20 – Nu tu vei duce veştile astăzi! Tu vei duce altă dată veştile; astăzi însă nu vei duce tu veştile, pentru că a murit fiul regelui, i-a răspuns Ioab.

But Joab said to him, “You are not the man to carry news this day, but you shall carry news another day; however, you shall carry no news today because the king’s son is dead.”

21 A poi i-a poruncit unui cuşit: – Du-te şi vesteşte-i regelui ce ai văzut. Cuşitul s-a închinat înaintea lui Ioab şi a luat-o la fugă.

Then Joab said to the Cushite, “Go, tell the king what you have seen.” So the Cushite bowed to Joab and ran.

22 A himaaţ, fiul lui Ţadok, i-a zis din nou lui Ioab: – Orice s-ar întâmpla, lasă-mă şi pe mine să alerg după cuşit. – Fiule, de ce vrei să alergi? l-a întrebat Ioab. Nu sunt nişte veşti pentru care să fii răsplătit.

Now Ahimaaz the son of Zadok said once more to Joab, “But whatever happens, please let me also run after the Cushite.” And Joab said, “Why would you run, my son, since you will have no reward for going?”

23 – Orice s-ar întâmpla, vreau să alerg, i-a zis Ahimaaţ. – Bine, i-a spus Ioab, aleargă. Ahimaaţ a alergat pe drumul care traversează Araba şi l-a întrecut pe cuşit.

“But whatever happens,” he said, “I will run.” So he said to him, “Run.” Then Ahimaaz ran by way of the plain and passed up the Cushite.

24 Î n timp ce David se afla undeva între cele două porţi, străjerul s-a urcat pe acoperişul porţii, înspre zid şi, uitându-se, a zărit un om singur care alerga.

Now David was sitting between the two gates; and the watchman went up to the roof of the gate by the wall, and raised his eyes and looked, and behold, a man running by himself.

25 L -a strigat pe rege şi i-a spus acest lucru. Regele a zis: – Dacă este singur înseamnă că aduce veşti. Omul se apropia din ce în ce mai mult.

The watchman called and told the king. And the king said, “If he is by himself there is good news in his mouth.” And he came nearer and nearer.

26 L a un moment dat, străjerul a zărit un alt om care alerga şi a strigat către portar: – Văd un alt om singur care aleargă. – Şi el aduce veşti, a zis regele.

Then the watchman saw another man running; and the watchman called to the gatekeeper and said, “Behold, another man running by himself.” And the king said, “This one also is bringing good news.”

27 – Felul de alergare al celui dintâi pare a fi cel al lui Ahimaaţ, fiul lui Ţadok, a spus străjerul. – Înseamnă că aduce veşti bune, a zis regele, deoarece acesta este un om bun.

The watchman said, “I think the running of the first one is like the running of Ahimaaz the son of Zadok.” And the king said, “ This is a good man and comes with good news.”

28 A himaaţ i-a strigat regelui: – Totul este bine! Apoi s-a închinat cu faţa la pământ înaintea lui şi i-a zis: – Binecuvântat să fie Domnul, Dumnezeul tău, Care i-a dat în mâinile noastre pe cei ce se răzvrătiseră împotriva stăpânului meu, regele.

Ahimaaz called and said to the king, “ All is well.” And he prostrated himself before the king with his face to the ground. And he said, “ Blessed is the Lord your God, who has delivered up the men who lifted their hands against my lord the king.”

29 – Tânărul Absalom este bine? a întrebat regele. – Slujitorul tău a văzut o mare învălmăşeală, atunci când a fost trimis de Ioab, dar nu ştie despre ce era vorba, a răspuns Ahimaaţ.

The king said, “ Is it well with the young man Absalom?” And Ahimaaz answered, “When Joab sent the king’s servant, and your servant, I saw a great tumult, but I did not know what it was.”

30 – Aşteaptă puţin deoparte, i-a zis regele. Ahimaaţ a stat deoparte.

Then the king said, “Turn aside and stand here.” So he turned aside and stood still.

31 Î ndată a sosit şi cuşitul, care a zis: – Am veşti bune pentru stăpânul meu, regele. Domnul te-a izbăvit astăzi din mâna tuturor celor ce se ridicaseră împotriva ta.

Behold, the Cushite arrived, and the Cushite said, “Let my lord the king receive good news, for the Lord has freed you this day from the hand of all those who rose up against you.”

32 – Tânărul Absalom este bine? l-a întrebat regele. – Ca acest tânăr să fie toţi duşmanii stăpânului meu, regele, şi toţi cei ce se ridică împotriva ta ca să-ţi facă vreun rău, i-a răspuns cuşitul. David îl plânge pe Absalom

Then the king said to the Cushite, “ Is it well with the young man Absalom?” And the Cushite answered, “ Let the enemies of my lord the king, and all who rise up against you for evil, be as that young man!”

33 A tunci regele, cutremurându-se, s-a dus în încăperea care se afla deasupra porţii şi a început să plângă. În timp ce mergea, el spunea: „O, fiul meu Absalom! O, fiul meu, fiul meu Absalom! De ce n-am murit eu în locul tău? O, Absalom, fiul meu, fiul meu!“

The king was deeply moved and went up to the chamber over the gate and wept. And thus he said as he walked, “ O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! Would I had died instead of you, O Absalom, my son, my son!”
