1 A hab i-a istorisit Izabelei tot ceea ce făcuse Ilie şi cum îi omorâse pe toţi profeţii cu sabia.

Now Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword.

2 I zabela a trimis un mesager la Ilie ca să-i spună: „Zeii să se poarte cu mine cu toată asprimea dacă mâine la această oră nu voi face cu viaţa ta ce ai făcut tu cu viaţa fiecăruia dintre ei!“

Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, “ So may the gods do to me and even more, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time.”

3 C ând a auzit acest lucru, Ilie a fugit îndată ca să-şi scape viaţa. A ajuns la Beer-Şeba, care aparţine de Iuda şi şi-a lăsat slujitorul acolo,

And he was afraid and arose and ran for his life and came to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there.

4 i ar el s-a dus cale de o zi în pustie. A ajuns la un verigel, s-a aşezat sub el şi s-a rugat să moară: „Destul, Doamne! Ia-mi viaţa acum, căci nu sunt mai bun decât strămoşii mei.“

But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree; and he requested for himself that he might die, and said, “It is enough; now, O Lord, take my life, for I am not better than my fathers.”

5 A poi, s-a întins sub verigel şi a adormit. Deodată un înger l-a trezit şi i-a zis: „Scoală-te şi mănâncă!“

He lay down and slept under a juniper tree; and behold, there was an angel touching him, and he said to him, “Arise, eat.”

6 U itându-se, a văzut la capul său o turtă coaptă pe nişte pietre încălzite şi un urcior cu apă. După ce a mâncat şi a băut, s-a culcat din nou.

Then he looked and behold, there was at his head a bread cake baked on hot stones, and a jar of water. So he ate and drank and lay down again.

7 Î ngerul Domnului a venit a doua oară, l-a trezit şi i-a zis: „Scoală-te şi mănâncă, întrucât călătoria pe care o ai de făcut este prea lungă pentru tine!“

The angel of the Lord came again a second time and touched him and said, “Arise, eat, because the journey is too great for you.”

8 E l s-a sculat, a mâncat şi a băut; apoi, cu puterea pe care această mâncare i-o dăduse, a mers cale de patruzeci de zile şi patruzeci de nopţi până la Horeb, muntele lui Dumnezeu.

So he arose and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb, the mountain of God. Elijah at Horeb

9 A intrat într-o peşteră şi a petrecut noaptea acolo. Şi Domnul i-a vorbit astfel: – Ce faci tu aici, Ilie?

Then he came there to a cave and lodged there; and behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and He said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

10 – Am fost plin de râvnă pentru Domnul, Dumnezeul Oştirilor, a răspuns el, fiindcă israeliţii au încălcat legământul Tău, Ţi-au dărâmat altarele şi Ţi-au omorât profeţii cu sabia. Numai eu singur am mai rămas, iar ei încearcă să-mi ia şi mie viaţa.

He said, “ I have been very zealous for the Lord, the God of hosts; for the sons of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars and killed Your prophets with the sword. And I alone am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.”

11 – Ieşi şi stai înaintea Domnului pe munte, i-a spus Domnul, căci Domnul va trece pe acolo! Înaintea Domnului a venit un vânt mare şi puternic, care despica munţii şi sfărâma stâncile, dar Domnul nu era în acest vânt. După acest vânt, a fost un cutremur de pământ, dar Domnul nu era în acest cutremur.

So He said, “ Go forth and stand on the mountain before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord was passing by! And a great and strong wind was rending the mountains and breaking in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake.

12 D upă acest cutremur, a venit un foc, dar Domnul nu era în acest foc; iar după acest foc, a venit un murmur suav.

After the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a sound of a gentle blowing.

13 C ând l-a auzit, Ilie şi-a acoperit faţa cu mantaua, a ieşit şi a stat la intrarea peşterii. Şi o voce i-a vorbit astfel: – Ce faci tu aici, Ilie?

When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave. And behold, a voice came to him and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

14 – Am fost plin de râvnă pentru Domnul, Dumnezeul Oştirilor, a răspuns el, fiindcă israeliţii au încălcat legământul Tău, Ţi-au dărâmat altarele şi Ţi-au omorât profeţii cu sabia. Numai eu singur am mai rămas, iar ei încearcă să-mi ia şi mie viaţa.

Then he said, “ I have been very zealous for the Lord, the God of hosts; for the sons of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars and killed Your prophets with the sword. And I alone am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.”

15 – Întoarce-te pe drumul pe care ai venit, i-a spus Domnul, şi du-te până la pustia Damascului. Când vei ajunge acolo, să-l ungi pe Hazael ca rege peste Aram.

The Lord said to him, “Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus, and when you have arrived, you shall anoint Hazael king over Aram;

16 S ă-l ungi şi pe Iehu, fiul lui Nimşi, ca rege peste Israel, iar pe Elisei, fiul lui Şafat din Abel-Mehola, să-l ungi ca profet în locul tău.

and Jehu the son of Nimshi you shall anoint king over Israel; and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah you shall anoint as prophet in your place.

17 Ş i se va întâmpla că cel care va scăpa de sabia lui Hazael va fi omorât de Iehu, iar cel care va scăpa de sabia lui Iehu va fi omorât de Elisei.

It shall come about, the one who escapes from the sword of Hazael, Jehu shall put to death, and the one who escapes from the sword of Jehu, Elisha shall put to death.

18 D ar Mi-am păstrat în Israel şapte mii de bărbaţi, pe toţi aceia care nu şi-au plecat genunchii înaintea lui Baal şi care nu l-au sărutat.

Yet I will leave 7, 000 in Israel, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal and every mouth that has not kissed him.”

19 I lie a plecat de acolo şi l-a găsit pe Elisei, fiul lui Şafat, arând cu douăsprezece perechi de boi. El însuşi o mâna pe cea de-a douăsprezecea. Ilie a trecut pe lângă el şi şi-a aruncat mantaua peste acesta.

So he departed from there and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, while he was plowing with twelve pairs of oxen before him, and he with the twelfth. And Elijah passed over to him and threw his mantle on him.

20 E lisei a lăsat boii şi a fugit după Ilie. – Dă-mi voie să-mi iau rămas bun de la tatăl meu şi de la mama mea, i-a zis Elisei, şi apoi te voi urma! – Bine! Du-te, i-a zis Ilie, dar gândeşte-te la ce ţi-am făcut!

He left the oxen and ran after Elijah and said, “Please let me kiss my father and my mother, then I will follow you.” And he said to him, “Go back again, for what have I done to you?”

21 E lisei a plecat de lângă el, a luat o pereche de boi şi i-a înjunghiat. Dând foc uneltelor de arat, el a fiert carnea boilor şi le-a dat-o oamenilor s-o mănânce. După aceea l-a urmat pe Ilie şi i-a slujit.

So he returned from following him, and took the pair of oxen and sacrificed them and boiled their flesh with the implements of the oxen, and gave it to the people and they ate. Then he arose and followed Elijah and ministered to him.
