1 A fter these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, saying, “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward.”

Después de estos sucesos, la palabra del Señor vino a Abrán en una visión. Le dijo: «No temas, Abrán. Yo soy tu escudo, y tu galardón será muy grande.»

2 B ut Abram said, “Lord God, what will You give me, seeing I go childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?”

Abrán respondió: «Mi Señor y Dios, ¿qué puedes darme, si no tengo hijos, y el mayordomo de mi casa es ese damasceno Eliezer?»

3 T hen Abram said, “Look, You have given me no offspring; indeed one born in my house is my heir!”

También dijo Abrán: «Mira que no me has dado descendencia. Mi heredero será un esclavo nacido en mi casa.»

4 A nd behold, the word of the Lord came to him, saying, “This one shall not be your heir, but one who will come from your own body shall be your heir.”

Pero vino a él palabra del Señor, y le dijo: «Tu heredero no será éste, sino tu propio hijo.»

5 T hen He brought him outside and said, “Look now toward heaven, and count the stars if you are able to number them.” And He said to him, “So shall your descendants be.”

Entonces lo llevó afuera, y allí le dijo: «Fíjate ahora en los cielos, y cuenta las estrellas, si es que las puedes contar. ¡Así será tu descendencia!»

6 A nd he believed in the Lord, and He accounted it to him for righteousness.

Y Abrán creyó al Señor, y eso le fue contado por justicia.

7 T hen He said to him, “I am the Lord, who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans, to give you this land to inherit it.”

El Señor también le dijo: «Yo soy el Señor. Yo te saqué de Ur de los caldeos, para darte esta tierra como herencia.»

8 A nd he said, “Lord God, how shall I know that I will inherit it?”

Y Abrán respondió: «Señor, mi Señor, ¿y cómo sabré que la he de heredar?»

9 S o He said to him, “Bring Me a three-year-old heifer, a three-year-old female goat, a three-year-old ram, a turtledove, and a young pigeon.”

El Señor le dijo: «Tráeme una becerra, una cabra y un carnero, todos de tres años. Tráeme también una tórtola y un palomino.»

10 T hen he brought all these to Him and cut them in two, down the middle, and placed each piece opposite the other; but he did not cut the birds in two.

Abrán tomó todos estos animales, y los partió por la mitad, y puso las mitades una frente a la otra; pero no partió las aves.

11 A nd when the vultures came down on the carcasses, Abram drove them away.

Bajaban las aves de rapiña sobre los cuerpos muertos, y Abrán las ahuyentaba,

12 N ow when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and behold, horror and great darkness fell upon him.

pero al caer el sol el sueño venció a Abrán, y le sobrevino el temor de una gran oscuridad.

13 T hen He said to Abram: “Know certainly that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, and will serve them, and they will afflict them four hundred years.

Entonces el Señor le dijo: «Debes saber que tu descendencia habitará en una tierra extraña, y que allí será esclava y la oprimirán durante cuatrocientos años.

14 A nd also the nation whom they serve I will judge; afterward they shall come out with great possessions.

Pero también yo juzgaré a la nación a la cual servirán, y después de eso ellos saldrán de allí con grandes riquezas.

15 N ow as for you, you shall go to your fathers in peace; you shall be buried at a good old age.

Y tú te reunirás en paz con tus padres, y serás sepultado en buena vejez.

16 B ut in the fourth generation they shall return here, for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete.”

Y después de cuatro generaciones volverán acá; porque hasta ahora no ha llegado todavía a su colmo la maldad de los amorreos.»

17 A nd it came to pass, when the sun went down and it was dark, that behold, there appeared a smoking oven and a burning torch that passed between those pieces.

Y sucedió que, cuando el sol se puso y ya todo estaba oscuro, podía verse un horno humeante y una antorcha de fuego, la cual pasaba entre los animales divididos.

18 O n the same day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying: “To your descendants I have given this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the River Euphrates—

En aquel día el Señor hizo un pacto con Abrán. Le dijo: «A tu descendencia le daré esta tierra, desde el río de Egipto hasta el gran río Éufrates,

19 t he Kenites, the Kenezzites, the Kadmonites,

hasta la tierra de los quenitas, los quenizitas, los cadmoneos,

20 t he Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim,

los hititas, los ferezeos, los refaítas,

21 t he Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.”

los amorreos, los cananeos, los gergeseos y los jebuseos.»
