1 A nd Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses’ father-in-law, heard of all that God had done for Moses and for Israel His people—that the Lord had brought Israel out of Egypt.

Jetro, que era sacerdote de Madián y suegro de Moisés, se enteró de todo lo que Dios había hecho con Moisés y con su pueblo Israel, y que el Señor había sacado de Egipto a Israel.

2 T hen Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, took Zipporah, Moses’ wife, after he had sent her back,

Como Moisés había enviado a Séfora, su mujer, a la casa de Jetro, su suegro, éste la tomó

3 w ith her two sons, of whom the name of one was Gershom (for he said, “I have been a stranger in a foreign land”)

junto con sus dos hijos. Uno de ellos se llamaba Gersón, porque Moisés dijo: «Soy un extraño en una tierra extraña»;

4 a nd the name of the other was Eliezer (for he said, “The God of my father was my help, and delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh”);

el otro se llamaba Eliezer, porque dijo: «El Dios de mi padre me ayudó y me libró de la espada del faraón.»

5 a nd Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, came with his sons and his wife to Moses in the wilderness, where he was encamped at the mountain of God.

Acompañado de los hijos y la mujer de Moisés, el suegro de Moisés se fue al monte de Dios, en el desierto, que era donde Moisés estaba acampando.

6 N ow he had said to Moses, “I, your father-in-law Jethro, am coming to you with your wife and her two sons with her.”

Allí le dijo a Moisés: «Yo soy Jetro, tu suegro, y vengo a verte con tu mujer. Sus dos hijos vienen con ella.»

7 S o Moses went out to meet his father-in-law, bowed down, and kissed him. And they asked each other about their well-being, and they went into the tent.

Entonces Moisés salió a recibir a su suegro, y se inclinó y lo besó, y luego de preguntarse el uno al otro cómo estaban, entraron en la tienda.

8 A nd Moses told his father-in-law all that the Lord had done to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel’s sake, all the hardship that had come upon them on the way, and how the Lord had delivered them.

Allí Moisés le contó a su suegro todo lo que el Señor había hecho por Israel y en contra del faraón y de los egipcios, así como todos los trabajos que habían pasado en el camino, y cómo el Señor los había librado.

9 T hen Jethro rejoiced for all the good which the Lord had done for Israel, whom He had delivered out of the hand of the Egyptians.

Jetro se alegró de lo bien que el Señor había tratado a Israel, al librarlo de manos de los egipcios,

10 A nd Jethro said, “Blessed be the Lord, who has delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians and out of the hand of Pharaoh, and who has delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians.

y dijo: «Bendito sea el Señor, que los libró a ustedes de manos de los egipcios, y de manos del faraón. ¡El Señor libró al pueblo de manos de los egipcios!

11 N ow I know that the Lord is greater than all the gods; for in the very thing in which they behaved proudly, He was above them.”

Ahora sé que el Señor es más grande que todos los dioses, porque en este caso él los venció.»

12 T hen Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, took a burnt offering and other sacrifices to offer to God. And Aaron came with all the elders of Israel to eat bread with Moses’ father-in-law before God.

Luego Jetro, el suegro de Moisés, ofreció holocaustos y sacrificios para Dios, y Aarón llegó con todos los ancianos de Israel para comer con el suegro de Moisés delante de Dios. Nombramiento de jueces

13 A nd so it was, on the next day, that Moses sat to judge the people; and the people stood before Moses from morning until evening.

Al día siguiente, sucedió que Moisés se sentó a juzgar al pueblo, y el pueblo estuvo delante de Moisés desde la mañana hasta la tarde.

14 S o when Moses’ father-in-law saw all that he did for the people, he said, “What is this thing that you are doing for the people? Why do you alone sit, and all the people stand before you from morning until evening?”

Al ver el suegro de Moisés todo lo que éste hacía con el pueblo, dijo: «¿Qué es lo que estás haciendo con el pueblo? ¿Por qué te sientas tú solo, mientras todo el pueblo se queda delante de ti desde la mañana hasta la tarde?»

15 A nd Moses said to his father-in-law, “Because the people come to me to inquire of God.

Moisés le respondió a su suegro: «Es que el pueblo viene a mí para consultar a Dios.

16 W hen they have a difficulty, they come to me, and I judge between one and another; and I make known the statutes of God and His laws.”

Cuando tienen problemas, vienen a mí; entonces yo juzgo entre el uno y el otro, y les doy a conocer las ordenanzas y leyes de Dios.»

17 S o Moses’ father-in-law said to him, “The thing that you do is not good.

Pero el suegro de Moisés le dijo: «Esto que haces no está bien,

18 B oth you and these people who are with you will surely wear yourselves out. For this thing is too much for you; you are not able to perform it by yourself.

pues te cansarás tú, y también se cansará este pueblo. Este trabajo es demasiado pesado para ti, y no vas a poder hacerlo tú solo.

19 L isten now to my voice; I will give you counsel, and God will be with you: Stand before God for the people, so that you may bring the difficulties to God.

Préstame atención, que voy a darte un consejo, y que Dios te acompañe. Preséntate ante Dios en lugar del pueblo, y somete a su juicio todos los problemas.

20 A nd you shall teach them the statutes and the laws, and show them the way in which they must walk and the work they must do.

Enséñales a ellos las ordenanzas y las leyes, e indícales cómo deben conducirse, y qué deben hacer.

21 M oreover you shall select from all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them to be rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.

Además, escoge de entre el pueblo algunos hombres respetables y temerosos de Dios, confiables y nada ambiciosos, y ponlos al frente de grupos de mil, cien, cincuenta y diez personas.

22 A nd let them judge the people at all times. Then it will be that every great matter they shall bring to you, but every small matter they themselves shall judge. So it will be easier for you, for they will bear the burden with you.

Que se ocupen ellos de juzgar al pueblo en todo momento, que dicten sentencia en cuestiones menores, y que a ti te remitan todo asunto de gravedad. Así aligerarás tu carga, pues ellos la llevarán contigo.

23 I f you do this thing, and God so commands you, then you will be able to endure, and all this people will also go to their place in peace.”

Si haces esto, y Dios así te lo ordena, podrás resistir; además, todo el pueblo volverá tranquilo a su casa.»

24 S o Moses heeded the voice of his father-in-law and did all that he had said.

Moisés atendió a la voz de su suegro, e hizo todo lo que le dijo,

25 A nd Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people: rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.

pues de entre todo Israel escogió hombres respetables y los puso a cargo del pueblo como jefes de grupos de mil, cien, cincuenta y diez personas.

26 S o they judged the people at all times; the hard cases they brought to Moses, but they judged every small case themselves.

Ellos juzgaban al pueblo en todo momento y dictaban sentencia en todo asunto menor, y remitían a Moisés las cuestiones difíciles de resolver.

27 T hen Moses let his father-in-law depart, and he went his way to his own land.

Después Moisés despidió a su suegro, y éste volvió a su tierra.
