1 T he word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord when King Zedekiah sent to him Pashhur the son of Melchiah, and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah, the priest, saying,

La palabra del Señor vino a Jeremías cuando el rey Sedequías le envió un mensaje por medio de Pasjur hijo de Malquías, y del sacerdote Sofonías hijo de Maseías. El rey mandó a decirle:

2 “ Please inquire of the Lord for us, for Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon makes war against us. Perhaps the Lord will deal with us according to all His wonderful works, that the king may go away from us.”

«Jeremías, consulta al Señor acerca de nosotros, porque Nabucodonosor, el rey de Babilonia, nos ha declarado la guerra. Tal vez el Señor nos trate de acuerdo con todas sus maravillas y haga que Nabucodonosor se aleje de nosotros.»

3 T hen Jeremiah said to them, “Thus you shall say to Zedekiah,

Pero Jeremías les respondió: «Díganle a Sedequías

4 ‘ Thus says the Lord God of Israel: “Behold, I will turn back the weapons of war that are in your hands, with which you fight against the king of Babylon and the Chaldeans who besiege you outside the walls; and I will assemble them in the midst of this city.

que el Señor y Dios de Israel ha dicho: “Ustedes se han levantado en armas contra el rey de Babilonia, y contra los caldeos que están fuera de la muralla y los tienen sitiados. Pero yo voy a hacer que esas mismas armas de guerra se vuelvan contra ustedes. Voy a amontonarlas en medio de esta ciudad,

5 I Myself will fight against you with an outstretched hand and with a strong arm, even in anger and fury and great wrath.

y levantaré mi mano contra ustedes; los combatiré con brazo fuerte, y con gran enojo y furor.

6 I will strike the inhabitants of this city, both man and beast; they shall die of a great pestilence.

Heriré a los habitantes de esta ciudad, y hombres y bestias por igual morirán por causa de una gran peste.

7 A nd afterward,” says the Lord, “I will deliver Zedekiah king of Judah, his servants and the people, and such as are left in this city from the pestilence and the sword and the famine, into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of those who seek their life; and he shall strike them with the edge of the sword. He shall not spare them, or have pity or mercy.”’

Después de eso, pondré en manos del rey Nabucodonosor de Babilonia al rey Sedequías de Judá, a sus criados, al pueblo y a los que sobrevivan a la peste, la espada y el hambre que habrá en la ciudad. Los pondré en manos de los enemigos que buscan matarlos, y ellos los matarán a filo de espada. No los perdonarán. No les tendrán lástima ni compasión. —Palabra del Señor.

8 “ Now you shall say to this people, ‘Thus says the Lord: “Behold, I set before you the way of life and the way of death.

”Y a este pueblo dirás que así ha dicho el Señor: ‘Pongo ante ustedes la posibilidad de elegir entre el camino de vida y el camino de la muerte.

9 H e who remains in this city shall die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence; but he who goes out and defects to the Chaldeans who besiege you, he shall live, and his life shall be as a prize to him.

El que se quede en esta ciudad morirá por la espada, por el hambre o por la peste. Pero el que salga de ella y se pase al bando de los caldeos que los tienen sitiados, se pondrá a salvo y su vida será su botín.

10 F or I have set My face against this city for adversity and not for good,” says the Lord. “It shall be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire.”’ Message to the House of David

Yo me he puesto a observar esta ciudad, para su mal y no para su bien. Voy a ponerla en manos del rey de Babilonia, y él le prenderá fuego.’ —Palabra del Señor.

11 “ And concerning the house of the king of Judah, say, ‘Hear the word of the Lord,

”A los de la casa del rey de Judá les dirás: ‘Escuchen la palabra del Señor,

12 O house of David! Thus says the Lord: “Execute judgment in the morning; And deliver him who is plundered Out of the hand of the oppressor, Lest My fury go forth like fire And burn so that no one can quench it, Because of the evil of your doings.

ustedes, los de la casa de David. Así ha dicho el Señor: Dicten sentencias justas por la mañana, y libren a los oprimidos del poder de sus opresores. De lo contrario, por causa de sus malas obras mi ira saldrá como fuego, y se encenderá y no habrá quien pueda apagarla.’

13 “ Behold, I am against you, O inhabitant of the valley, And rock of the plain,” says the Lord, “Who say, ‘Who shall come down against us? Or who shall enter our dwellings?’

”Yo estoy contra ti, ciudad asentada en el valle, que eres la roca de la llanura. Contra ti, que dices: ‘¿Quién podrá atacarnos? ¿Quién podrá entrar en nuestros aposentos?’ —Palabra del Señor.

14 B ut I will punish you according to the fruit of your doings,” says the Lord; “I will kindle a fire in its forest, And it shall devour all things around it.”’”

”Yo te castigaré como merecen ser castigadas tus malas obras. Yo le prenderé fuego a tu bosque, y el fuego consumirá todo cuanto te rodea.”» —Palabra del Señor.
