1 N ow King Zedekiah the son of Josiah reigned instead of Coniah the son of Jehoiakim, whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon made king in the land of Judah.

El rey Nabucodonosor de Babilonia nombró rey de Judá a Sedequías hijo de Josías, y éste reinó en lugar de Conías hijo de Joacín.

2 B ut neither he nor his servants nor the people of the land gave heed to the words of the Lord which He spoke by the prophet Jeremiah.

Pero ni él ni sus siervos, ni el pueblo de la tierra, hicieron caso de las palabras que el Señor les anunció por medio del profeta Jeremías.

3 A nd Zedekiah the king sent Jehucal the son of Shelemiah, and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah, the priest, to the prophet Jeremiah, saying, “Pray now to the Lord our God for us.”

Sin embargo, el rey Sedequías envió a Jucal hijo de Selemías, y al sacerdote Sofonías hijo de Maseías, para que le pidieran al profeta Jeremías que orara al Señor su Dios por ellos.

4 N ow Jeremiah was coming and going among the people, for they had not yet put him in prison.

Jeremías andaba con toda libertad en medio del pueblo, porque todavía no lo habían encarcelado.

5 T hen Pharaoh’s army came up from Egypt; and when the Chaldeans who were besieging Jerusalem heard news of them, they departed from Jerusalem.

Los caldeos tenían sitiada a la ciudad de Jerusalén, pero cuando les llegó la noticia de que el ejército del rey de Egipto marchaba contra ellos, se retiraron de Jerusalén.

6 T hen the word of the Lord came to the prophet Jeremiah, saying,

La palabra del Señor vino entonces al profeta Jeremías, y le dijo:

7 “ Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘Thus you shall say to the king of Judah, who sent you to Me to inquire of Me: “Behold, Pharaoh’s army which has come up to help you will return to Egypt, to their own land.

«Así ha dicho el Señor y Dios de Israel: El rey de Judá los envió a consultarme. Pues díganle que el ejército del faraón, que había salido en su ayuda, ya se ha regresado a Egipto, su país.

8 A nd the Chaldeans shall come back and fight against this city, and take it and burn it with fire.”’

Así que los caldeos volverán y atacarán esta ciudad, y la conquistarán y le prenderán fuego.

9 T hus says the Lord: ‘Do not deceive yourselves, saying, “The Chaldeans will surely depart from us,” for they will not depart.

»Así ha dicho el Señor: No se engañen a ustedes mismos, ni piensen que los caldeos van a apartarse de ustedes, porque no se apartarán.

10 F or though you had defeated the whole army of the Chaldeans who fight against you, and there remained only wounded men among them, they would rise up, every man in his tent, and burn the city with fire.’” Jeremiah Imprisoned

Aun cuando ustedes hieran a todo el ejército caldeo que los combate, y de ellos queden solamente hombres heridos, cada uno de ellos se levantará de su tienda y le prenderá fuego a esta ciudad.»

11 A nd it happened, when the army of the Chaldeans left the siege of Jerusalem for fear of Pharaoh’s army,

En el momento en que, por causa del ejército de Faraón, se retiraba de Jerusalén el ejército de los caldeos,

12 t hat Jeremiah went out of Jerusalem to go into the land of Benjamin to claim his property there among the people.

Jeremías quiso alejarse del pueblo y salió de Jerusalén para irse a la tierra de Benjamín,

13 A nd when he was in the Gate of Benjamin, a captain of the guard was there whose name was Irijah the son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah; and he seized Jeremiah the prophet, saying, “You are defecting to the Chaldeans!”

pero sucedió que, al llegar a la puerta de Benjamín, estaba allí un capitán llamado Irías hijo de Selemías, hijo de Jananías, el cual tomó preso al profeta Jeremías con el pretexto de que éste se estaba pasando al bando de los caldeos.

14 T hen Jeremiah said, “False! I am not defecting to the Chaldeans.” But he did not listen to him. So Irijah seized Jeremiah and brought him to the princes.

Jeremías negó estar pasándose al bando de los caldeos, pero Irías no le hizo caso, sino que lo aprehendió y lo hizo comparecer ante los príncipes.

15 T herefore the princes were angry with Jeremiah, and they struck him and put him in prison in the house of Jonathan the scribe. For they had made that the prison.

Éstos se enojaron con Jeremías, y ordenaron azotarlo y ponerlo en prisión en la casa del escriba Jonatán, la cual habían convertido en cárcel.

16 W hen Jeremiah entered the dungeon and the cells, and Jeremiah had remained there many days,

Jeremías entró en las bóvedas de la casa de la cisterna, y allí se quedó mucho tiempo.

17 t hen Zedekiah the king sent and took him out. The king asked him secretly in his house, and said, “Is there any word from the Lord ?” And Jeremiah said, “There is.” Then he said, “You shall be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon!”

Pero el rey Sedequías envió por él y lo sacó de allí, y una vez en su casa le preguntó de manera confidencial: «¿Tienes algún mensaje del Señor?» Y Jeremías le dijo: «Lo tengo. Vas a caer en manos del rey de Babilonia.»

18 M oreover Jeremiah said to King Zedekiah, “What offense have I committed against you, against your servants, or against this people, that you have put me in prison?

Además, Jeremías también le dijo al rey: «¿Qué pecado cometí contra ti, o contra tus siervos, o contra este pueblo, para que ustedes me echaran en la cárcel?

19 W here now are your prophets who prophesied to you, saying, ‘The king of Babylon will not come against you or against this land’?

¿Dónde están esos profetas que les profetizaban que el rey de Babilonia no vendría a atacarlos, ni a ustedes ni a esta tierra?

20 T herefore please hear now, O my lord the king. Please, let my petition be accepted before you, and do not make me return to the house of Jonathan the scribe, lest I die there.”

Yo te ruego, mi rey y señor, que atiendas mi súplica y no me hagas volver a casa del escriba Jonatán. ¡No quiero morir allí!»

21 T hen Zedekiah the king commanded that they should commit Jeremiah to the court of the prison, and that they should give him daily a piece of bread from the bakers’ street, until all the bread in the city was gone. Thus Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.

Entonces el rey Sedequías ordenó que Jeremías quedara bajo vigilancia en el patio de la cárcel, y que todos los días se le diera una pieza de pan, directamente de las panaderías, mientras hubiera pan en la ciudad. Fue así como Jeremías se quedó en el patio de la cárcel.
