1 W hen thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee:

Cuando te sientes a comer con algún señor, Considera bien lo que está delante de ti,

2 A nd put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite.

Y pon cuchillo a tu garganta, Si eres dado a la gula.

3 B e not desirous of his dainties: for they are deceitful meat.

No codicies sus manjares delicados, Porque es pan engañoso.

4 L abour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom.

No te afanes por hacerte rico; Sé prudente y deja de pensar en ello.

5 W ilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven.

¿Has de poner tus ojos en las riquezas, siendo tan fugaces? Porque se harán alas Como alas de águila, que se remonta al cielo.

6 E at thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats:

No comas pan con el avaro, Ni codicies sus manjares;

7 F or as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.

Porque cual es su pensamiento en su corazón, tal es él. Come y bebe, te dirá; Mas su corazón no está contigo.

8 T he morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words.

Vomitarás la parte que comiste, Y perderás tus suaves palabras.

9 S peak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of thy words.

No hables a oídos del necio, Porque menospreciará la prudencia de tus razones.

10 R emove not the old landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless:

No desplaces el lindero antiguo, Ni entres en la heredad de los huérfanos;

11 F or their redeemer is mighty; he shall plead their cause with thee.

Porque el defensor de ellos es el Fuerte, El cual defenderá la causa de ellos contra ti.

12 A pply thine heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge.

Aplica tu corazón a la instrucción, Y tus oídos a las palabras de sabiduría.

13 W ithhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die.

No rehúses corregir al muchacho; Porque si lo castigas con vara, no morirá.

14 T hou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell.

Lo castigarás con vara, Y preservarás su alma del Seol.

15 M y son, if thine heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine.

Hijo mío, si tu corazón es sabio, También a mí se me alegrará el corazón;

16 Y ea, my reins shall rejoice, when thy lips speak right things.

Mis entrañas también se alegrarán Cuando tus labios hablen cosas rectas.

17 L et not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the Lord all the day long.

No tenga tu corazón envidia de los pecadores, Sino que permanezca en el temor de Jehová todo el tiempo;

18 F or surely there is an end; and thine expectation shall not be cut off.

Porque ciertamente existe un mañana, Y tu esperanza no será cortada.

19 H ear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thine heart in the way.

Escucha, hijo mío, y sé sabio, Y endereza tu corazón al camino recto.

20 B e not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh:

No estés con los bebedores de vino, Ni con los engullidores de carne;

21 F or the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.

Porque el bebedor y el comilón empobrecerán, Y la somnolencia hará vestir vestidos rotos.

22 H earken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.

Oye a tu padre, a aquel que te engendró; Y cuando tu madre envejezca, no la menosprecies.

23 B uy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.

Compra la verdad, y no la vendas; La sabiduría, la instrucción y la inteligencia.

24 T he father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that begetteth a wise child shall have joy of him.

Mucho se alegrará el padre del justo, Y el que engendra al sabio se gozará con él.

25 T hy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bare thee shall rejoice.

Alégrense tu padre y tu madre, Y gócese la que te dio a luz.

26 M y son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.

Dame, hijo mío, tu corazón, Y miren tus ojos por mis caminos.

27 F or a whore is a deep ditch; and a strange woman is a narrow pit.

Porque abismo profundo es la ramera, Y pozo angosto la extraña.

28 S he also lieth in wait as for a prey, and increaseth the transgressors among men.

También ella, como robador, acecha, Y multiplica entre los hombres los prevaricadores.

29 W ho hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?

¿Para quién será el ay? ¿Para quién el dolor? ¿Para quién las rencillas? ¿Para quién las quejas? ¿Para quién las heridas sin razón? ¿Para quién los ojos turbios?

30 T hey that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.

Para los que se detienen mucho en el vino, Para los que van buscando las mezclas alcohólicas.

31 L ook not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright.

No mires al vino cuando rojea, Cuando resplandece su color en la copa. Se entra suavemente;

32 A t the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.

Mas al fin como serpiente morderá, Y como áspid dará dolor.

33 T hine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things.

Tus ojos verán cosas extrañas, Y tu corazón hablará perversidades.

34 Y ea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.

Serás como el que yace en medio del mar, O como el que está en la punta de un mástil.

35 T hey have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.

Y dirás: Me hirieron, mas no me dolió; Me azotaron, mas no lo sentí; Cuando despierte, aún volveré a pedir más.
