1 F orasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us,

2 E ven as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word;

3 I t seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus,

me ha parecido bien también a mí, después de haber investigado todo con esmero desde su origen, escribirte ordenadamente, excelentísimo Teófilo,

4 T hat thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed.

para que te percates bien de la solidez de las enseñanzas en las que fuiste instruido. Anuncio del nacimiento de Juan el Bautista

5 T here was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.

Hubo en los días de Herodes, rey de Judea, cierto sacerdote llamado Zacarías, del turno de Abías; tenía por esposa una de las descendientes de Aarón, la cual se llamaba Elisabet.

6 A nd they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.

Ambos eran rectos delante de Dios, y caminaban irreprochablemente en todos los mandamientos y ordenanzas del Señor.

7 A nd they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years.

Pero no tenían hijo, porque Elisabet era estéril, y ambos eran de edad avanzada.

8 A nd it came to pass, that while he executed the priest's office before God in the order of his course,

Sucedió que, mientras estaba él ejerciendo su ministerio sacerdotal delante de Dios, en el turno de su grupo,

9 A ccording to the custom of the priest's office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord.

le tocó en suerte, conforme a la costumbre del sacerdocio, entrar en el santuario del Señor a quemar incienso.

10 A nd the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incense.

Y toda la multitud del pueblo estaba orando afuera, a la hora del incienso.

11 A nd there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.

Entonces se le apareció un ángel del Señor, de pie, a la derecha del altar del incienso.

12 A nd when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.

Al verle Zacarías, se turbó, y el temor se apoderó de él.

13 B ut the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.

Pero el ángel le dijo: No temas, Zacarías, porque tu petición ha sido escuchada; tu mujer Elisabet te engendrará un hijo, y le llamarás Juan.

14 A nd thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.

Tendrás gozo y júbilo, y muchos se regocijarán por su nacimiento.

15 F or he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.

Pues será grande a los ojos del Señor, no beberá jamás ni vino ni licor, y será lleno del Espíritu Santo aun desde el vientre de su madre;

16 A nd many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.

y a muchos de los hijos de Israel les hará volver al Señor su Dios;

17 A nd he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

y él mismo irá delante, en su presencia, con el espíritu y el poder de Elías, para hacer volver los corazones de los padres a los hijos, y los desobedientes a la sensatez de los justos, a preparar para el Señor un pueblo bien dispuesto.

18 A nd Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.

Zacarías le dijo al ángel: ¿Cómo podré estar seguro de esto? Porque yo soy anciano, y mi esposa es de edad avanzada.

19 A nd the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings.

El ángel le respondió diciendo: Yo soy Gabriel, que estoy de continuo en la presencia de Dios, y he sido enviado a hablar contigo y a anunciarte estas buenas noticias.

20 A nd, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.

Y ahora vas a permanecer en silencio y sin poder hablar hasta el día en que sucedan estas cosas, por cuanto no has dado crédito a mis palabras, las cuales se cumplirán a su debido tiempo.

21 A nd the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple.

El pueblo estaba aguardando a Zacarías, y se extrañaban de su demora en el santuario.

22 A nd when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: for he beckoned unto them, and remained speechless.

Cuando salió no podía hablarles, y se dieron cuenta de que había visto una visión en el santuario; él estaba haciéndoles señas, y permanecía mudo.

23 A nd it came to pass, that, as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house.

Y sucedió que, cuando se cumplieron los días de su servicio sacerdotal, se marchó a su casa.

24 A nd after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying,

Después de estos días, concibió Elisabet, su mujer; y se mantuvo recluida durante cinco meses, diciendo:

25 T hus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.

Así ha obrado el Señor conmigo en los días en que se fijó en mí para quitar mi oprobio entre los hombres. Anuncio del nacimiento de Jesucristo

26 A nd in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,

Al sexto mes, fue enviado de Dios el ángel Gabriel a una ciudad de Galilea, llamada Nazaret,

27 T o a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.

a una virgen desposada con un hombre llamado José, descendiente de David; y el nombre de la virgen era María.

28 A nd the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.

Y entrando adonde ella estaba, dijo: ¡Salve, muy favorecida! El Señor está contigo. Bendita tú entre las mujeres.

29 A nd when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.

Ella se turbó profundamente por estas palabras, y consideraba qué significaría este saludo.

30 A nd the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.

Y el ángel le dijo: Deja de temer, María, porque has hallado gracia ante Dios.

31 A nd, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus.

Mira, concebirás en tu seno y darás a luz un hijo, y llamarás su nombre Jesús.

32 H e shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:

Éste será grande y será llamado Hijo del Altísimo. El Señor Dios le dará el trono de su padre David,

33 A nd he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

y reinará sobre la casa de Jacob para siempre; y su reino no tendrá fin.

34 T hen said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?

Entonces le dijo María al ángel: ¿Cómo será esto, puesto que no conozco varón?

35 A nd the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

El ángel le respondió y le dijo: El Espíritu Santo vendrá sobre ti, y el poder del Altísimo te cubrirá con su sombra; por lo cual también lo santo que va a nacer será llamado Hijo de Dios.

36 A nd, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.

Y he aquí que tu parienta Elisabet, también ella ha concebido un hijo en su vejez; y ya está de seis meses la que era llamada estéril;

37 F or with God nothing shall be impossible.

porque ninguna cosa será imposible para Dios.

38 A nd Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.

Y María dijo: He aquí la sierva del Señor; hágase conmigo conforme a tu palabra. Y se marchó el ángel de su presencia. María visita a Elisabet

39 A nd Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda;

Por esos mismos días, María se levantó y se marchó de prisa a la región montañosa, a una ciudad de Judá;

40 A nd entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.

y entró en casa de Zacarías, y saludó a Elisabet.

41 A nd it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:

Y aconteció que, en cuanto oyó Elisabet el saludo de María, saltó la criatura en su vientre; y Elisabet fue llena del Espíritu Santo,

42 A nd she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.

y exclamó con gran voz, y dijo: ¡Bendita tú entre las mujeres, y bendito el fruto de tu vientre!

43 A nd whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

Y ¿de dónde a mí esto, que la madre de mi Señor venga a mí?

44 F or, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.

Porque tan pronto como llegó a mis oídos la voz de tu saludo, saltó de gozo la criatura en mi vientre.

45 A nd blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord.

¡Bienaventurada la que ha creído que tendrán cumplimiento las cosas que le han hablado de parte del Señor!

46 A nd Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,

Y dijo María: Engrandece mi alma al Señor,

47 A nd my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.

Y mi espíritu ha saltado de gozo en Dios mi Salvador;

48 F or he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.

Porque ha puesto sus ojos sobre la pequeñez de su esclava; Pues he aquí que desde ahora me tendrán por dichosa todas las generaciones.

49 F or he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name.

Porque ha hecho por mí grandes cosas el Poderoso; Santo es su nombre.

50 A nd his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.

Y su misericordia alcanza de generación en generación a los que le temen.

51 H e hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.

Ha realizado grandes proezas con su brazo; Desbarató a los arrogantes en el pensamiento del corazón de ellos.

52 H e hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree.

Abatió de sus solios a los potentados, Y exaltó a los de humilde condición;

53 H e hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.

Colmó de bienes a los hambrientos, Y a los ricos los despidió con las manos vacías.

54 H e hath helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy;

Vino en ayuda de Israel su siervo, Para recuerdo de misericordia,

55 A s he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever.

Tal como habló con nuestros padres, A favor de Abraham y de su descendencia para siempre.

56 A nd Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house.

Permaneció María con ella unos tres meses, y regresó a su casa. Nacimiento de Juan el Bautista

57 N ow Elisabeth's full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son.

Se le cumplió a Elisabet el tiempo de dar a luz, y dio a luz un hijo.

58 A nd her neighbours and her cousins heard how the Lord had shewed great mercy upon her; and they rejoiced with her.

Oyeron sus vecinos y sus parientes que el Señor había mostrado gran misericordia hacia ella, y se regocijaban juntamente con ella.

59 A nd it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father.

Sucedió que al octavo día vinieron a circuncidar al niño, y le iban a llamar Zacarías según el nombre de su padre,

60 A nd his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John.

pero su madre, tomando la palabra, dijo: No, sino que se ha de llamar Juan.

61 A nd they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name.

Y le dijeron: No hay nadie de tu parentela que se llame así.

62 A nd they made signs to his father, how he would have him called.

Y le preguntaban por señas a su padre cómo desearía que se le llamase.

63 A nd he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all.

Entonces él pidió una tablilla y escribió lo siguiente: Juan es su nombre. Y todos se asombraron.

64 A nd his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised God.

Al instante le fue abierta la boca y desatada la lengua, y comenzó a hablar bendiciendo a Dios.

65 A nd fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judaea.

Y vino temor sobre todos los que vivían en derredor suyo; y en toda la zona montañosa de Judea se comentaban todas estas cosas.

66 A nd all they that heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, What manner of child shall this be! And the hand of the Lord was with him.

Y todos los que las oían las grababan en su corazón, diciendo: ¿Qué, pues, va a ser este niño? Porque ciertamente la mano del Señor estaba con él. Profecía de Zacarías

67 A nd his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying,

Y Zacarías su padre fue lleno del Espíritu Santo, y profetizó diciendo:

68 B lessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people,

Bendito el Señor Dios de Israel, Porque ha visitado y ha efectuado redención para su pueblo.

69 A nd hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David;

Y ha suscitado una fuerza de salvación en favor nuestro, En casa de David su siervo,

70 A s he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began:

Tal como habló desde antiguo Por boca de sus santos profetas,

71 T hat we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us;

Que nos salvaría de nuestros enemigos, Y de las manos de todos los que nos odian;

72 T o perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant;

Para mostrar su misericordia para con nuestros padres, Y recordar su santo pacto,

73 T he oath which he sware to our father Abraham,

El juramento que hizo a Abraham nuestro padre:

74 T hat he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear,

Concedernos que, liberados de las manos de nuestros enemigos, Le sirvamos sin temor

75 I n holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life.

En santidad de vida y rectitud de conducta ante sus ojos, Todos nuestros días.

76 A nd thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;

Y tú, niño, serás llamado profeta del Altísimo; Porque irás ante la faz del Señor, Para preparar sus caminos;

77 T o give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins,

Para dar a su pueblo conocimiento de salvación, Por el perdón de sus pecados,

78 T hrough the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us,

Por medio de las entrañas de misericordia de nuestro Dios, Por las cuales nos visitó un amanecer del sol desde lo alto,

79 T o give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Para que brille su luz sobre los que están sentados en tinieblas y en sombra de muerte, Para guiar nuestros pies hacia un camino de paz.

80 A nd the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel.

Y el niño crecía y se fortalecía en espíritu; y vivía en lugares desiertos hasta el día de su aparición pública ante Israel.
