1 A nd it came to pass, when all the kings which were on this side Jordan, in the hills, and in the valleys, and in all the coasts of the great sea over against Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard thereof;

Cuando oyeron estas cosas todos los reyes que estaban a este lado del Jordán, así en las montañas como en los llanos, y en toda la costa del Mar Grande delante del Líbano, los heteos, amorreos, cananeos, ferezeos, heveos y jebuseos,

2 T hat they gathered themselves together, to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord.

se concertaron para pelear contra Josué e Israel. Engaño de los gabaonitas

3 A nd when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done unto Jericho and to Ai,

Mas los moradores de Gabaón, cuando oyeron lo que Josué había hecho a Jericó y a Hay,

4 T hey did work wilily, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine bottles, old, and rent, and bound up;

usaron de astucia; pues fueron y se fingieron embajadores, y tomaron sacos viejos sobre sus asnos, y cueros viejos de vino, rotos y remendados,

5 A nd old shoes and clouted upon their feet, and old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry and mouldy.

y sandalias viejas y recosidas en sus pies, con vestidos viejos sobre sí; y todo el pan que traían para el camino era seco y mohoso.

6 A nd they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said unto him, and to the men of Israel, We be come from a far country: now therefore make ye a league with us.

Y vinieron a Josué al campamento en Gilgal, y le dijeron a él y a los de Israel: Nosotros venimos de tierra muy lejana; haced, pues, ahora alianza con nosotros.

7 A nd the men of Israel said unto the Hivites, Peradventure ye dwell among us; and how shall we make a league with you?

Y los de Israel respondieron a los heveos: Quizás habitáis en medio de nosotros. ¿Cómo, pues, podremos hacer alianza con vosotros?

8 A nd they said unto Joshua, We are thy servants. And Joshua said unto them, Who are ye? and from whence come ye?

Ellos respondieron a Josué: Nosotros somos tus siervos. Y Josué les dijo: ¿Quiénes sois vosotros, y de dónde venís?

9 A nd they said unto him, From a very far country thy servants are come because of the name of the Lord thy God: for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt,

Y ellos respondieron: Tus siervos han venido de tierra muy lejana, por causa del nombre de Jehová tu Dios; porque hemos oído su fama, y todo lo que hizo en Egipto,

10 A nd all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites, that were beyond Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, which was at Ashtaroth.

y todo lo que hizo a los dos reyes de los amorreos que estaban al otro lado del Jordán: a Sehón rey de Hesbón, y a Og rey de Basán, que estaba en Astarot.

11 W herefore our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spake to us, saying, Take victuals with you for the journey, and go to meet them, and say unto them, We are your servants: therefore now make ye a league with us.

Por lo cual nuestros ancianos y todos los moradores de nuestra tierra nos dijeron: Tomad en vuestras manos provisión para el camino, e id al encuentro de ellos, y decidles: Nosotros somos vuestros siervos; haced ahora alianza con nosotros.

12 T his our bread we took hot for our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go unto you; but now, behold, it is dry, and it is mouldy:

Este nuestro pan lo tomamos caliente de nuestras casas para el camino el día que salimos para venir a vosotros; y helo aquí ahora ya seco y mohoso.

13 A nd these bottles of wine, which we filled, were new; and, behold, they be rent: and these our garments and our shoes are become old by reason of the very long journey.

Estos cueros de vino también los llenamos nuevos; helos aquí ya rotos; también estos nuestros vestidos y nuestras sandalias están ya viejos a causa de lo muy largo del camino.

14 A nd the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the Lord.

Y los hombres de Israel aceptaron sus provisiones, sin consultar el oráculo de Jehová.

15 A nd Joshua made peace with them, and made a league with them, to let them live: and the princes of the congregation sware unto them.

Y Josué hizo paz con ellos, y celebró con ellos alianza concediéndoles la vida; y también lo juraron los príncipes de la congregación.

16 A nd it came to pass at the end of three days after they had made a league with them, that they heard that they were their neighbours, and that they dwelt among them.

Pasados tres días después que hicieron alianza con ellos, oyeron que eran sus vecinos, y que habitaban en medio de ellos.

17 A nd the children of Israel journeyed, and came unto their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kirjathjearim.

Y salieron los hijos de Israel, y al tercer día llegaron a las ciudades de ellos; y sus ciudades eran Gabaón, Cafirá, Beerot y Quiryat-jearim.

18 A nd the children of Israel smote them not, because the princes of the congregation had sworn unto them by the Lord God of Israel. And all the congregation murmured against the princes.

Y no los mataron los hijos de Israel, por cuanto los príncipes de la congregación les habían jurado por Jehová el Dios de Israel. Y toda la congregación murmuraba contra los príncipes.

19 B ut all the princes said unto all the congregation, We have sworn unto them by the Lord God of Israel: now therefore we may not touch them.

Mas todos los príncipes respondieron a toda la congregación: Nosotros les hemos jurado por Jehová Dios de Israel; por tanto, ahora no les podemos tocar.

20 T his we will do to them; we will even let them live, lest wrath be upon us, because of the oath which we sware unto them.

Esto haremos con ellos: les dejaremos vivir, para que no venga ira sobre nosotros por causa del juramento que les hemos hecho.

21 A nd the princes said unto them, Let them live; but let them be hewers of wood and drawers of water unto all the congregation; as the princes had promised them.

Dijeron, pues, de ellos los príncipes: Dejadlos vivir; pero que sean leñadores y aguadores para toda la congregación. Así les concedieron la vida, según les habían prometido los príncipes.

22 A nd Joshua called for them, and he spake unto them, saying, Wherefore have ye beguiled us, saying, We are very far from you; when ye dwell among us?

Y llamándolos Josué, les habló diciendo: ¿Por qué nos habéis engañado, diciendo: Habitamos muy lejos de vosotros, siendo así que moráis en medio de nosotros?

23 N ow therefore ye are cursed, and there shall none of you be freed from being bondmen, and hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God.

Ahora, pues, malditos sois, y no dejará de haber de entre vosotros siervos, y quien corte la leña y saque el agua para la casa de mi Dios.

24 A nd they answered Joshua, and said, Because it was certainly told thy servants, how that the Lord thy God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you, therefore we were sore afraid of our lives because of you, and have done this thing.

Y ellos respondieron a Josué y dijeron: Como fue dado a entender a tus siervos que Jehová tu Dios había mandado a Moisés su siervo que os había de dar toda la tierra, y que había de destruir a todos los moradores de la tierra delante de vosotros, por esto temimos en gran manera por nuestras vidas a causa de vosotros, e hicimos esto.

25 A nd now, behold, we are in thine hand: as it seemeth good and right unto thee to do unto us, do.

Ahora, pues, henos aquí en tu mano; lo que te pareciere bueno y recto hacer de nosotros, hazlo.

26 A nd so did he unto them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, that they slew them not.

Y él lo hizo así con ellos; pues los libró de la mano de los hijos de Israel, y no los mataron.

27 A nd Joshua made them that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation, and for the altar of the Lord, even unto this day, in the place which he should choose.

Y Josué los destinó aquel día a ser leñadores y aguadores para la congregación, y para el altar de Jehová en el lugar que Jehová eligiese, lo que son hasta hoy.
