1 T he word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying,

Palabra que vino a Jeremías de parte de Jehová, diciendo:

2 A rise, and go down to the potter's house, and there I will cause thee to hear my words.

Levántate y vete a casa del alfarero, y allí te haré oír mis palabras.

3 T hen I went down to the potter's house, and, behold, he wrought a work on the wheels.

Y descendí a casa del alfarero, y he aquí que él trabajaba sobre las dos ruedas.

4 A nd the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.

Y siempre que la vasija que él hacía se echaba a perder en su mano, volvía a hacer otra vasija, según le parecía mejor hacerla.

5 T hen the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

Entonces vino a mí palabra de Jehová, diciendo:

6 O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the Lord. Behold, as the clay is in the potter's hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel.

¿No podré yo hacer de vosotros como este alfarero, oh casa de Israel?, dice Jehová. He aquí que como el barro en la mano del alfarero, así sois vosotros en mi mano, oh casa de Israel.

7 A t what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up, and to pull down, and to destroy it;

De pronto puedo hablar contra un pueblo y contra un reino, para arrancar, y derribar, y destruir.

8 I f that nation, against whom I have pronounced, turn from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do unto them.

Pero si ese pueblo contra el cual hablé se vuelve de su maldad, yo me arrepiento del mal que había pensado hacerles,

9 A nd at what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it;

y en un instante hablo de la gente y del reino, para edificar y para plantar.

10 I f it do evil in my sight, that it obey not my voice, then I will repent of the good, wherewith I said I would benefit them.

Pero si hace lo malo delante de mis ojos, no escuchando mi voz, me arrepiento del bien que había determinado hacerle.

11 N ow therefore go to, speak to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the Lord; Behold, I frame evil against you, and devise a device against you: return ye now every one from his evil way, and make your ways and your doings good.

Ahora, pues, habla luego a todo hombre de Judá y a los moradores de Jerusalén, diciendo: Así dice Jehová: He aquí que yo tramo el mal contra vosotros, y trazo contra vosotros maquinación; conviértase ahora cada uno de su mal camino, y enmiende sus caminos y sus obras.

12 A nd they said, There is no hope: but we will walk after our own devices, and we will every one do the imagination of his evil heart.

Y dijeron: Es en vano; porque en pos de nuestras propias maquinaciones iremos, y haremos cada uno según la terquedad de nuestro malvado corazón.

13 T herefore thus saith the Lord; Ask ye now among the heathen, who hath heard such things: the virgin of Israel hath done a very horrible thing.

Por tanto, así dice Jehová: Preguntad ahora entre las naciones, quién ha oído cosa semejante. Gran fealdad ha hecho la virgen de Israel.

14 W ill a man leave the snow of Lebanon which cometh from the rock of the field? or shall the cold flowing waters that come from another place be forsaken?

¿Faltará la nieve del Líbano de su roca más alta? ¿Faltarán las aguas frías que corren de lejanas tierras?

15 B ecause my people hath forgotten me, they have burned incense to vanity, and they have caused them to stumble in their ways from the ancient paths, to walk in paths, in a way not cast up;

Porque mi pueblo me ha olvidado, incensando a lo que es vanidad, y ha sido inducido a tropezar en sus caminos, en las sendas antiguas, para que camine por sendas y no por camino transitado,

16 T o make their land desolate, and a perpetual hissing; every one that passeth thereby shall be astonished, and wag his head.

para hacer de su tierra objeto de asombro y de burla perpetua; todo aquel que pase por ella se asombrará, y meneará la cabeza.

17 I will scatter them as with an east wind before the enemy; I will shew them the back, and not the face, in the day of their calamity.

Como con viento solano los esparciré delante del enemigo; les mostraré las espaldas y no el rostro, en el día de su perdición. Conspiración del pueblo y oración de Jeremías

18 T hen said they, Come and let us devise devices against Jeremiah; for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us smite him with the tongue, and let us not give heed to any of his words.

Y dijeron: Venid y maquinemos contra Jeremías; porque la ley no faltará al sacerdote, ni el consejo al sabio, ni la palabra al profeta. Venid e hirámoslo con la lengua, y no atendamos a ninguna de sus palabras.

19 G ive heed to me, O Lord, and hearken to the voice of them that contend with me.

Oh Jehová, mira por mí, y presta atención a la voz de los que contienden conmigo.

20 S hall evil be recompensed for good? for they have digged a pit for my soul. Remember that I stood before thee to speak good for them, and to turn away thy wrath from them.

¿Es que se paga mal por bien, para que hayan cavado hoyo a mi alma? Acuérdate que me puse delante de ti para hablar el bien por ellos, para apartar de ellos tu ira.

21 T herefore deliver up their children to the famine, and pour out their blood by the force of the sword; and let their wives be bereaved of their children, and be widows; and let their men be put to death; let their young men be slain by the sword in battle.

Por tanto, entrega sus hijos a hambre, entrégalos al poder de la espada, y queden sus mujeres sin hijos, y viudas; y sus maridos sean puestos a muerte, y sus jóvenes heridos a espada en la batalla.

22 L et a cry be heard from their houses, when thou shalt bring a troop suddenly upon them: for they have digged a pit to take me, and hid snares for my feet.

Óigase clamor de sus casas, cuando traigas sobre ellos de repente un ejército; porque cavaron un hoyo para prenderme, y a mis pies han escondido lazos.

23 Y et, Lord, thou knowest all their counsel against me to slay me: forgive not their iniquity, neither blot out their sin from thy sight, but let them be overthrown before thee; deal thus with them in the time of thine anger.

Pero tú, oh Jehová, conoces todo su plan contra mí para matarme; no perdones su maldad, ni borres su pecado de delante de tu rostro; sino deja que tropiecen delante de ti; haz así con ellos en el tiempo de tu enojo.
