1 F or all this I considered in my heart even to declare all this, that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God: no man knoweth either love or hatred by all that is before them.

Pues bien, he aplicado mi corazón a todas estas cosas, y he visto esto: que los justos y los sabios, y sus obras, están en la mano de Dios; que lo que es amor o lo que es odio, no lo saben los hombres; obran por lo que aparece delante de ellos.

2 A ll things come alike to all: there is one event to the righteous, and to the wicked; to the good and to the clean, and to the unclean; to him that sacrificeth, and to him that sacrificeth not: as is the good, so is the sinner; and he that sweareth, as he that feareth an oath.

Y, al final, una misma suerte aguarda a todos; tanto al justo como al impío; al bueno y limpio, y al no limpio; al que sacrifica, y al que no sacrifica; como al bueno, así al que peca; al que jura, como al que teme el juramento.

3 T his is an evil among all things that are done under the sun, that there is one event unto all: yea, also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead.

Este mal hay entre todo lo que se hace debajo del sol, que una misma suerte les espera a todos, y también que el corazón de los hijos de los hombres está lleno de mal y de insensatez en su corazón durante su vida; y después de esto se van a los muertos.

4 F or to him that is joined to all the living there is hope: for a living dog is better than a dead lion.

Aún hay esperanza para todo aquel que está entre los vivos; porque mejor es perro vivo que león muerto.

5 F or the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.

Porque los que viven saben que han de morir; pero los muertos nada saben, ni tienen más paga; porque su memoria es puesta en olvido.

6 A lso their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun.

También su amor y su odio y su envidia fenecieron ya; y nunca más tendrán parte en todo lo que se hace debajo del sol.

7 G o thy way, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry heart; for God now accepteth thy works.

Anda, pues, y come tu pan con gozo, y bebe tu vino con corazón alegre; porque tus obras ya son agradables a Dios.

8 L et thy garments be always white; and let thy head lack no ointment.

En todo tiempo sean blancos tus vestidos, y nunca falte perfume sobre tu cabeza.

9 L ive joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which he hath given thee under the sun, all the days of thy vanity: for that is thy portion in this life, and in thy labour which thou takest under the sun.

Goza de la vida con la mujer que amas, todos los días de la vida fugaz que te son dados debajo del sol, todos esos años fugaces; porque ésta es tu parte en la vida, y en el trabajo con que te afanas debajo del sol.

10 W hatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.

Todo lo que esté al alcance de tu mano, esmérate en hacerlo según tus fuerzas; porque en el Seol, adonde vas, no hay obra, ni trabajo, ni ciencia, ni sabiduría. La suerte

11 I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.

Vi, además, debajo del sol, que no siempre es de los ligeros la carrera, ni la guerra de los fuertes, ni aun de los sabios el pan, ni de los prudentes las riquezas, ni de los elocuentes el favor; sino que todos tienen oportunidades e infortunios.

12 F or man also knoweth not his time: as the fishes that are taken in an evil net, and as the birds that are caught in the snare; so are the sons of men snared in an evil time, when it falleth suddenly upon them.

Porque el hombre tampoco conoce su tiempo; como los peces que son presos en la red, y como las aves que se enredan en lazo, así son enlazados los hijos de los hombres en el infortunio, cuando les sobreviene de improviso.

13 T his wisdom have I seen also under the sun, and it seemed great unto me:

También aprendí esta lección debajo del sol, la cual me parece importante:

14 T here was a little city, and few men within it; and there came a great king against it, and besieged it, and built great bulwarks against it:

una pequeña ciudad, y pocos hombres en ella; y viene contra ella un gran rey, y la asedia y levanta contra ella grandes baluartes;

15 N ow there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man.

y se halla en ella un hombre pobre, pero sabio, el cual libra a la ciudad con su sabiduría; y nadie se acordó de aquel hombre pobre.

16 T hen said I, Wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless the poor man's wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard.

Entonces dije yo: Mejor es la sabiduría que la fuerza, aunque la ciencia del pobre sea menospreciada, y no sean escuchadas sus palabras.

17 T he words of wise men are heard in quiet more than the cry of him that ruleth among fools.

Mejor se escuchan las palabras tranquilas de un sabio que los gritos de un capitán de necios.

18 W isdom is better than weapons of war: but one sinner destroyeth much good.

Mejor es la sabiduría que las armas de guerra; pero un solo error destruye mucho bien.
