7 V olete dunque difendere Dio parlando con menzogna? Sostenere la sua causa con parole di frode?

Will you speak unrighteously for God, and talk deceitfully for him?

8 V olete avere riguardo alla sua persona? E costituirvi difensori di Dio?

Will you show partiality to him? Will you contend for God?

9 S arà un bene per voi quando egli vi scruterà a fondo? Credete di ingannarlo come s’inganna un uomo?

Is it good that he should search you out? Or as one deceives a man, will you deceive him?

10 C erto egli vi riprenderà severamente, se nel vostro segreto avete dei riguardi personali.

He will surely reprove you if you secretly show partiality.

11 L a sua maestà non vi farà sgomenti? Il suo terrore non piomberà su di voi?

Shall not his majesty make you afraid, And his dread fall on you?

12 I vostri detti memorabili sono massime di cenere; i vostri baluardi son baluardi d’argilla.

Your memorable sayings are proverbs of ashes, Your defenses are defenses of clay.

13 « Tacete, lasciatemi stare; voglio parlare io, succeda quel che succeda!

“Be silent, leave me alone, that I may speak. Let come on me what will.

16 A nche questo servirà alla mia salvezza; poiché un empio non ardirebbe presentarsi a lui.

18 E cco, io ho predisposto ogni elemento per la causa; so che sarò riconosciuto giusto.

19 C ’è qualcuno che voglia farmi opposizione? Se c’è, io taccio e sono pronto a morire.

Who is he who will contend with me? For then would I hold my peace and give up the spirit.

20 M a, o Dio, concedimi solo due cose, e non mi nasconderò dalla tua presenza:

“Only don’t do two things to me; then I will not hide myself from your face:

21 r itira da me la tua mano e fa che i tuoi terrori non mi spaventino più.

withdraw your hand far from me; and don’t let your terror make me afraid.

22 P oi interrogami e io risponderò; oppure parlerò io, e tu replicherai.

Then call, and I will answer; or let me speak, and you answer me.

23 Q uante sono le mie iniquità, quanti i miei peccati? Fammi conoscere la mia trasgressione, il mio peccato!

How many are my iniquities and sins? Make me know my disobedience and my sin.

24 P erché nascondi il tuo volto e mi consideri un nemico?

Why hide you your face, and hold me for your enemy?

25 V uoi dunque atterrire una foglia portata via dal vento? Vuoi forse perseguitare una pagliuzza inaridita?

Will you harass a driven leaf? Will you pursue the dry stubble?

26 T u mi condanni a pene così amare e mi fai espiare gli sbagli della mia giovinezza;

For you write bitter things against me, and make me inherit the iniquities of my youth:

27 t u metti i miei piedi nei ceppi, spii tutti i miei movimenti e prendi nota delle orme dei miei piedi.

You also put my feet in the stocks, and mark all my paths. You set a bound to the soles of my feet,

28 I ntanto questo mio corpo si disfa come legno tarlato, come un abito roso dal tarlo.
