1 L a buona reputazione è da preferirsi alle molte ricchezze, e la stima, all’argento e all’oro.

A good name is more desirable than great riches, and loving favor is better than silver and gold.

2 I l ricco e il povero s’incontrano; il Signore li ha fatti tutti e due.

The rich and the poor have this in common: Yahweh is the maker of them all.

3 L ’uomo accorto vede venire il male e si nasconde, ma gli ingenui tirano avanti e ne subiscono le conseguenze.

A prudent man sees danger, and hides himself; but the simple pass on, and suffer for it.

4 I l frutto dell’umiltà e del timore del Signore è ricchezza, gloria e vita.

The result of humility and the fear of Yahweh is wealth, honor, and life.

5 S pine e lacci sono sulla via del perverso; chi ha cura della sua vita se ne tiene lontano.

Thorns and snares are in the path of the wicked: whoever guards his soul stays from them.

6 I nsegna al ragazzo la condotta che deve tenere; anche quando sarà vecchio non se ne allontanerà.

Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.

7 I l ricco domina sui poveri, e chi prende in prestito è schiavo di chi presta.

The rich rule over the poor. The borrower is servant to the lender.

8 C hi semina iniquità miete sciagura, e la verga della sua collera è infranta.

He who sows wickedness reaps trouble, and the rod of his fury will be destroyed.

9 L ’uomo dallo sguardo benevolo sarà benedetto, perché dà del suo pane al povero.

He who has a generous eye will be blessed; for he shares his food with the poor.

10 C accia via il beffardo se ne andranno le contese; e cesseranno le liti e le offese.

Drive out the mocker, and strife will go out; yes, quarrels and insults will stop.

11 C hi ama la purezza del cuore e ha la grazia sulle labbra, ha il re per amico.

He who loves purity of heart and speaks gracefully is the king’s friend.

12 G li occhi del Signore proteggono la scienza, ma egli rende vane le parole del perfido.

Yahweh’s eyes watch over knowledge; but he frustrates the words of the unfaithful.

13 I l pigro dice: «Là fuori c’è un leone; sarò ucciso per la strada».

The sluggard says, “There is a lion outside! I will be killed in the streets!”

14 L a bocca delle donne corrotte è una fossa profonda; chi subisce l’ira del Signore vi cadrà dentro.

The mouth of an adulteress is a deep pit: he who is under Yahweh’s wrath will fall into it.

15 L a follia è legata al cuore del bambino, ma la verga della correzione l’allontanerà da lui.

Folly is bound up in the heart of a child: the rod of discipline drives it far from him.

16 C hi opprime il povero l’arricchisce; chi dona al ricco non fa che impoverirlo.

Whoever oppresses the poor for his own increase and whoever gives to the rich, both come to poverty.

17 P orgi l’orecchio e ascolta le parole dei saggi, e applica il cuore alla mia scienza;

Turn your ear, and listen to the words of the wise. Apply your heart to my teaching.

18 t i sarà dolce custodirle in cuore e averle tutte pronte sulle tue labbra.

For it is a pleasant thing if you keep them within you, if all of them are ready on your lips.

19 H o voluto istruirti oggi, sì, proprio te, perché la tua fiducia sia posta nel Signore.

That your trust may be in Yahweh, I teach you today, even you.

20 N on ho già da tempo scritto per te consigli e insegnamenti

Haven’t I written to you thirty excellent things of counsel and knowledge,

21 p er farti conoscere cose certe, parole vere, perché tu possa rispondere parole vere a chi t’interroga ?

To teach you truth, reliable words, to give sound answers to the ones who sent you?

22 N on derubare il povero perch’è povero, e non opprimere il misero alla porta della città,

Don’t exploit the poor, because he is poor; and don’t crush the needy in court;

23 p oiché il Signore difenderà la loro causa e spoglierà della vita chi avrà spogliato loro.

for Yahweh will plead their case, and plunder the life of those who plunder them.

24 N on fare amicizia con l’uomo collerico, non andare con l’uomo violento,

Don’t befriend a hot-tempered man, and don’t associate with one who harbors anger:

25 p erché tu non impari le sue vie ed esponga te stesso a un’insidia.

lest you learn his ways, and ensnare your soul.

26 N on essere di quelli che dan la mano, che danno cauzione per debiti.

Don’t you be one of those who strike hands, of those who are collateral for debts.

27 S e non hai di che pagare, perché esporti a farti portare via il letto?

If you don’t have means to pay, why should he take away your bed from under you?

28 N on spostare il confine antico che fu messo dai tuoi padri.

Don’t move the ancient boundary stone, which your fathers have set up.

29 H ai visto un uomo veloce nelle sue faccende? Egli starà al servizio del re; non starà al servizio della gente oscura.

Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will serve kings. He won’t serve obscure men.
