1 C ’era un uomo, discendente di Beniamino, che si chiamava Chis, figlio di Abiel, figlio di Seror, figlio di Becorat, figlio di Afiac, figlio di un Beniaminita. Era un uomo forte e valoroso;

Now there was a man of Benjamin, whose name was Kish, the son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Becorath, the son of Aphiah, the son of a Benjamite, a mighty man of valor.

2 a veva un figlio di nome Saul, giovane e bello; tra i figli d’Israele non ce n’era uno più bello di lui; era più alto di tutta la gente, dalle spalle in su.

He had a son, whose name was Saul, an impressive young man; and there was not among the children of Israel a better person than he. From his shoulders and upward he was taller than any of the people.

3 L e asine di Chis, padre di Saul, si erano smarrite; e Chis disse a suo figlio Saul: «Prendi con te uno dei servi, e va’ in cerca delle asine».

The donkeys of Kish, Saul’s father, were lost. Kish said to Saul his son, “Take now one of the servants with you, and arise, go look for the donkeys.”

4 E gli andò per la regione montuosa di Efraim e attraversò il paese di Salisa, senza trovarle; poi passarono per il paese di Saalim, ma non c’erano; attraversarono il paese dei Beniaminiti, ma non le trovarono.

He passed through the hill country of Ephraim, and passed through the land of Shalishah, but they didn’t find them. Then they passed through the land of Shaalim, and there they weren’t there. Then he passed through the land of the Benjamites, but they didn’t find them.

5 Q uando giunsero nel paese di Suf, Saul disse al servo che era con lui: «Vieni, torniamo indietro, altrimenti mio padre smetterà di pensare alle asine e comincerà a preoccuparsi per noi».

When they had come to the land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant who was with him, “Come, and let us return, lest my father stop caring about the donkeys, and be anxious for us.”

6 I l servo gli disse: «Ecco, in questa città c’è un uomo di Dio che è tenuto in grande onore; tutto quello che dice succede sicuramente. Andiamoci, forse ci indicherà la via che dobbiamo seguire».

The servant said to him, “Behold now, there is in this city a man of God, and he is a man who is held in honor. All that he says surely happens. Now let us go there. Perhaps he can tell us which way to go.”

7 S aul disse al suo servo: «Ma se vi andiamo, che porteremo a quell’uomo? Poiché non ci sono più provviste nei nostri sacchi e non abbiamo nessun regalo da offrire all’uomo di Dio. Che abbiamo con noi?»

Then Saul said to his servant, “But, behold, if we go, what should we bring the man? For the bread is spent in our sacks, and there is not a present to bring to the man of God. What do we have?”

8 I l servo rispose a Saul: «Guarda, io ho un quarto di siclo d’argento; lo darò all’uomo di Dio, ed egli ci indicherà la via».

The servant answered Saul again, and said, “Behold, I have in my hand the fourth part of a shekel of silver. I will give that to the man of God, to tell us our way.”

9 A nticamente, in Israele, quando uno andava a consultare Dio, diceva: «Venite, andiamo dal veggente!» Infatti colui che oggi si chiama profeta, anticamente si chiamava veggente.

(In earlier times in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, he said, “Come, and let us go to the seer”; for he who is now called a prophet was before called a seer.)

10 S aul disse al suo servo: «Dici bene; andiamo». Così si avviarono verso la città dove stava l’uomo di Dio.

Then Saul said to his servant, “Well said. Come, let us go.” So they went to the city where the man of God was.

11 M entre percorrevano la salita che conduce alla città, trovarono delle ragazze che uscivano ad attingere acqua e chiesero loro: «È qui il veggente?»

As they went up the ascent to the city, they found young maidens going out to draw water, and said to them, “Is the seer here?”

12 Q uelle risposero: «Sì, c’è; è là dove sei diretto; ma va’ presto, poiché è venuto oggi in città, dato che oggi il popolo fa un sacrificio sull’alto luogo.

They answered them, and said, “He is. Behold, he is before you. Hurry now, for he has come today into the city; for the people have a sacrifice today in the high place.

13 Q uando sarete entrati in città, lo troverete di certo, prima che egli salga all’alto luogo a mangiare. Il popolo non mangerà prima che egli sia giunto, perché è lui che deve benedire il sacrificio; dopo di che i convitati mangeranno. Salite dunque, perché proprio ora lo troverete».

As soon as you have come into the city, you will immediately find him, before he goes up to the high place to eat; for the people will not eat until he come, because he blesses the sacrifice. Afterwards those who are invited eat. Now therefore go up; for at this time you will find him.”

14 E d essi salirono verso la città; e, appena vi furono entrati, ecco Samuele che usciva verso di loro per salire all’alto luogo.

They went up to the city. As they came within the city, behold, Samuel came out toward them, to go up to the high place.

15 U n giorno prima dell’arrivo di Saul, il Signore aveva avvertito Samuele, e gli aveva detto:

Now Yahweh had revealed to Samuel a day before Saul came, saying,

16 « Domani, a quest’ora, ti manderò un uomo del paese di Beniamino e tu l’ungerai come capo del mio popolo, Israele. Egli salverà il mio popolo dalle mani dei Filistei; infatti io ho rivolto il mio sguardo verso il mio popolo, perché il suo grido è giunto fino a me».

“Tomorrow about this time I will send you a man out of the land of Benjamin, and you shall anoint him to be prince over my people Israel. He will save my people out of the hand of the Philistines; for I have looked upon my people, because their cry has come to me.”

17 Q uando Samuele vide Saul, il Signore gli disse: «Ecco l’uomo di cui ti ho parlato; egli è colui che governerà il mio popolo».

When Samuel saw Saul, Yahweh said to him, “Behold, the man of whom I spoke to you! He will have authority over my people.”

18 S aul si avvicinò a Samuele entro la porta della città e gli disse: «Indicami, ti prego, dove sia la casa del veggente».

Then Saul approached Samuel in the gateway, and said, “Please tell me where the seer’s house is.”

19 S amuele rispose a Saul: «Sono io il veggente. Precedimi verso l’alto luogo, e oggi mangerete con me; poi domani mattina ti lascerò partire e ti dirò tutto quello che hai nel cuore.

Samuel answered Saul, and said, “I am the seer. Go up before me to the high place, for you are to eat with me today. In the morning I will let you go, and will tell you all that is in your heart.

20 Q uanto alle asine smarrite tre giorni fa, non dartene pensiero, perché sono state ritrovate. Per chi è quanto c’è di meglio in Israele? Non è forse per te e per tutta la casa di tuo padre?»

As for your donkeys who were lost three days ago, don’t set your mind on them; for they have been found. For whom is all that is desirable in Israel? Is it not for you, and for all your father’s house?”

21 S aul rispose e disse: «Non sono io un Beniaminita, di una delle più piccole tribù d’Israele? La mia famiglia è la più piccola fra tutte le famiglie della tribù di Beniamino. Perché dunque mi parli così?»

Saul answered, “Am I not a Benjamite, of the smallest of the tribes of Israel? And my family the least of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin? Why then do you speak to me like this?”

22 M a Samuele prese Saul e il suo servo, li introdusse nella sala e li fece sedere alla testa degli invitati, che erano circa trenta persone.

Samuel took Saul and his servant, and brought them into the guest room, and made them sit in the best place among those who were invited, who were about thirty persons.

23 S amuele disse al cuoco: «Porta qua la porzione che ti ho data dicendoti: “Tienila da parte vicino a te”».

Samuel said to the cook, “Bring the portion which I gave you, of which I said to you, ‘Set it aside.’”

24 I l cuoco allora prese la coscia e ciò che vi aderiva e la mise davanti a Saul. Samuele disse: «Ecco ciò che è stato tenuto da parte; mettitelo davanti e mangia, poiché è stato conservato apposta per te quando ho invitato il popolo». Così Saul, quel giorno, mangiò con Samuele.

The cook took up the thigh, and that which was on it, and set it before Saul. Samuel said, “Behold, that which has been reserved! Set it before yourself and eat; because for the appointed time has it been kept for you, for I said, ‘I have invited the people.’” So Saul ate with Samuel that day.

25 P oi scesero dall’alto luogo in città, e Samuele s’intrattenne con Saul sulla terrazza.

When they had come down from the high place into the city, he talked with Saul on the housetop.

26 L ’indomani si alzarono presto; allo spuntar dell’alba, Samuele chiamò Saul sulla terrazza e gli disse: «Vieni, perché devo lasciarti partire». Saul si alzò, e uscirono insieme, egli e Samuele.

They arose early; and about daybreak, Samuel called to Saul on the housetop, saying, “Get up, that I may send you away.” Saul arose, and they both went outside, he and Samuel, together.

27 Q uando furono scesi alla periferia della città, Samuele disse a Saul: «Di’ al servo che ci preceda». E il servo li oltrepassò. Allora Samuele disse: «Ma tu fèrmati, e ti farò udire la parola di Dio».

As they were going down at the end of the city, Samuel said to Saul, “Tell the servant to go on ahead of us.” He went ahead, then Samuel said, “But stand still first, that I may cause you to hear God’s message.”
