1 Q uesti sono i popoli che il Signore lasciò stare per mettere alla prova, per mezzo di essi, Israele, cioè tutti quelli che non avevano visto le guerre di Canaan.

Now these are the nations which Yahweh left, to test Israel by them, even as many as had not known all the wars of Canaan;

2 E gli voleva soltanto che le nuove generazioni dei figli d’Israele conoscessero e imparassero la guerra: quelli, per lo meno, che non l’avevano mai vista prima. Questi popoli erano:

only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at least those who knew nothing of it before:

3 i cinque prìncipi dei Filistei, tutti i Cananei, i Sidoni e gli Ivvei, che abitavano la montagna del Libano, dal monte Baal-Ermon fino all’ingresso di Camat.

the five lords of the Philistines, all the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites who lived on Mount Lebanon, from Mount Baal Hermon to the entrance of Hamath.

4 Q ueste nazioni servirono a mettere Israele alla prova, per vedere se Israele avrebbe ubbidito ai comandamenti che il Signore aveva dato ai loro padri per mezzo di Mosè.

They were left to test Israel by them, to know whether they would listen to Yahweh’s commandments, which he commanded their fathers by Moses.

5 C osì i figli d’Israele abitarono in mezzo ai Cananei, agli Ittiti, agli Amorei, ai Ferezei, agli Ivvei e ai Gebusei;

The children of Israel lived among the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites.

6 s posarono le loro figlie, diedero le proprie figlie come spose ai loro figli e servirono i loro dèi. Vittoria di Otniel sul re di Mesopotamia

They took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their own daughters to their sons and served their gods.

7 I figli d’Israele fecero ciò che è male agli occhi del Signore; dimenticarono il Signore, il loro Dio, e servirono gli idoli di Baal e di Astarte.

The children of Israel did that which was evil in Yahweh’s sight, and forgot Yahweh their God, and served the Baals and the Asheroth.

8 P erciò l’ira del Signore si accese contro Israele ed egli li diede nelle mani di Cusan-Risataim, re di Mesopotamia; e i figli d’Israele furono servi di Cusan-Risataim per otto anni.

Therefore Yahweh’s anger burned against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Cushan Rishathaim king of Mesopotamia; and the children of Israel served Cushan Rishathaim eight years.

9 P oi i figli d’Israele gridarono al Signore, e il Signore fece sorgere per loro un liberatore: Otniel, figlio di Chenaz, fratello minore di Caleb; ed egli li liberò.

When the children of Israel cried to Yahweh, Yahweh raised up a savior to the children of Israel, who saved them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother.

10 L o Spirito del Signore venne su di lui ed egli fu giudice d’Israele; uscì a combattere e il Signore gli diede nelle mani Cusan-Risataim, re di Mesopotamia; e la sua mano fu potente contro Cusan-Risataim.

The Yahweh’s Spirit came on him, and he judged Israel; and he went out to war, and Yahweh delivered Cushan Rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand. His hand prevailed against Cushan Rishathaim.

11 I l paese ebbe pace per quarant’anni; poi Otniel, figlio di Chenaz, morì. Vittoria di Eud su Moab

The land had rest forty years, then Othniel the son of Kenaz died.

12 I figli d’Israele continuarono a fare ciò che è male agli occhi del Signore; così il Signore rese forte Eglon, re di Moab, contro Israele, perché essi avevano fatto ciò che è male agli occhi del Signore.

The children of Israel again did that which was evil in Yahweh’s sight, and Yahweh strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done that which was evil in Yahweh’s sight.

13 E glon radunò intorno a sé i figli di Ammon e di Amalec; poi marciò contro Israele, lo sconfisse e s’impadronì della città delle palme.

He gathered the children of Ammon and Amalek to himself; and he went and struck Israel, and they possessed the city of palm trees.

14 I figli d’Israele furono servi di Eglon, re di Moab, per diciotto anni.

The children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.

15 I figli d’Israele gridarono al Signore ed egli fece sorgere per loro un liberatore: Eud, figlio di Ghera, beniaminita, che era mancino. I figli d’Israele mandarono per mezzo di lui un regalo a Eglon, re di Moab.

But when the children of Israel cried to Yahweh, Yahweh raised up a savior for them, Ehud the son of Gera, the Benjamite, a left-handed man. The children of Israel sent tribute by him to Eglon the king of Moab.

16 E ud si fece una spada a due tagli, lunga un cubito, e la cinse sotto la sua veste, al fianco destro.

Ehud made himself a sword which had two edges, a cubit in length; and he wore it under his clothing on his right thigh.

17 Q uindi offrì il regalo a Eglon, re di Moab, che era un uomo molto grasso.

He offered the tribute to Eglon king of Moab. Now Eglon was a very fat man.

18 Q uando ebbe finito la presentazione del regalo, rimandò la gente che l’aveva portato.

When he had finished offering the tribute, he sent away the people who carried the tribute.

19 M a egli, giunto agli idoli che sono presso a Ghilgal, tornò indietro e disse: «O re, io ho qualcosa da dirti in segreto». Il re disse: «Silenzio!» Tutti quelli che gli stavano intorno, uscirono.

But he himself turned back from the stone idols that were by Gilgal, and said, “I have a secret message for you, O king.” The king said, “Keep silence!” All who stood by him left him.

20 A llora Eud si avvicinò al re, che stava seduto nella sala di sopra, riservata a lui solo, per prendervi il fresco, e gli disse: «Ho una parola da dirti da parte di Dio». Eglon si alzò dal suo seggio;

Ehud came to him; and he was sitting by himself alone in the cool upper room. Ehud said, “I have a message from God to you.” He arose out of his seat.

21 e d Eud, stesa la mano sinistra, prese la spada dal suo fianco destro e gliela piantò nel ventre.

Ehud put out his left hand, and took the sword from his right thigh, and thrust it into his body:

22 A nche l’elsa entrò dopo la lama; e il grasso si rinchiuse attorno alla lama, poiché egli non gli ritirò dal ventre la spada, che gli usciva da dietro.

and the handle also went in after the blade; and the fat closed on the blade, for he didn’t draw the sword out of his body; and it came out behind.

23 P oi Eud uscì nel portico, chiuse le porte della sala di sopra e mise il chiavistello.

Then Ehud went out onto the porch, and shut the doors of the upper room on him, and locked them.

24 Q uando fu uscito, vennero i servi, i quali guardarono, ed ecco che le porte della sala di sopra erano chiuse con il chiavistello; e dissero: «Certo egli fa i suoi bisogni nello stanzino della sala fresca».

After he had gone, his servants came and saw that the doors of the upper room were locked. They said, “Surely he is covering his feet in the upper room.”

25 T anto aspettarono, che ne furono preoccupati; e poiché il re non apriva le porte della sala, quelli presero la chiave, aprirono, ed ecco che il loro signore era steso per terra, morto.

They waited until they were ashamed; and behold, he didn’t open the doors of the upper room. Therefore they took the key and opened them, and behold, their lord had fallen down dead on the floor.

26 M entre essi indugiavano, Eud si diede alla fuga, passò oltre gli idoli e si mise in salvo a Seira.

Ehud escaped while they waited, passed beyond the stone idols, and escaped to Seirah.

27 Q uando fu arrivato, suonò la tromba nella regione montuosa di Efraim, e i figli d’Israele scesero con lui dalla regione montuosa, ed egli si mise alla loro testa.

When he had come, he blew a trumpet in the hill country of Ephraim; and the children of Israel went down with him from the hill country, and he led them.

28 D isse loro: «Seguitemi, perché il Signore vi ha dato nelle mani i Moabiti, vostri nemici». Quelli scesero dietro a lui, s’impadronirono dei guadi del Giordano per impedire il passaggio ai Moabiti e non lasciarono passare nessuno.

He said to them, “Follow me; for Yahweh has delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand.” They followed him, and took the fords of the Jordan against the Moabites, and didn’t allow any man to pass over.

29 I n quel tempo sconfissero circa diecimila Moabiti, tutti robusti e valorosi; non ne scampò neppure uno.

They struck at that time about ten thousand men of Moab, every strong man, and every man of valor. No man escaped.

30 C osì, in quel giorno, Moab fu umiliato sotto la mano d’Israele e il paese ebbe pace per ottant’anni. Vittoria di Samgar sui Filistei

So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. Then the land had rest eighty years.

31 D opo Eud, venne Samgar, figlio di Anat. Egli sconfisse seicento Filistei con un pungolo da buoi; anch’egli liberò Israele.

After him was Shamgar the son of Anath, who struck six hundred men of the Philistines with an ox goad. He also saved Israel.
