Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned thirty-one years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Jedidah the daughter of Adaiah of Bozkath.

2 E gli fece ciò che è giusto agli occhi del Signore e camminò in tutto e per tutto per la via di Davide suo padre, senza scostarsene né a destra né a sinistra.

He did that which was right in Yahweh’s eyes, and walked in all the way of David his father, and didn’t turn aside to the right hand or to the left.

3 I l diciottesimo anno del re Giosia, il re mandò nella casa del Signore Safan, il segretario, figlio di Asalia, figlio di Mesullam, e gli disse:

In the eighteenth year of king Josiah, the king sent Shaphan, the son of Azaliah the son of Meshullam, the scribe, to Yahweh’s house, saying,

4 « Va’ da Chilchia, il sommo sacerdote, e digli che metta assieme il denaro che è stato portato nella casa del Signore e che i custodi della porta d’ingresso hanno raccolto dalle mani del popolo;

“Go up to Hilkiah the high priest, that he may count the money which is brought into Yahweh’s house, which the keepers of the threshold have gathered of the people.

5 c he lo si consegni ai funzionari preposti ai lavori della casa del Signore, e che questi lo diano agli operai addetti alle riparazioni della casa del Signore:

Let them deliver it into the hand of the workmen who have the oversight of Yahweh’s house; and let them give it to the workmen who are in Yahweh’s house, to repair the damage to the house,

6 a i falegnami, ai costruttori e ai muratori, perché se ne servano per comprare del legname e delle pietre da tagliare, per le riparazioni della casa.

to the carpenters, and to the builders, and to the masons, and for buying timber and cut stone to repair the house.

7 M a non si farà render conto a quelli che riceveranno il denaro, perché agiscono con fedeltà». Il libro della legge trovato nel tempio

However there was no accounting made with them of the money that was delivered into their hand; for they dealt faithfully.”

8 A llora il sommo sacerdote Chilchia disse a Safan, il segretario: «Ho trovato nella casa del Signore il libro della legge». E Chilchia diede il libro a Safan, che lo lesse.

Hilkiah the high priest said to Shaphan the scribe, “I have found the book of the law in Yahweh’s house.” Hilkiah delivered the book to Shaphan, and he read it.

9 S afan, il segretario, andò a riferire la cosa al re e gli disse: «I tuoi servi hanno versato il denaro che si è trovato nella casa e l’hanno consegnato a quelli che sono preposti ai lavori della casa del Signore ».

Shaphan the scribe came to the king, and brought the king word again, and said, “Your servants have emptied out the money that was found in the house, and have delivered it into the hands of the workmen who have the oversight of Yahweh’s house.”

10 S afan, il segretario, disse ancora al re: «Il sacerdote Chilchia mi ha dato un libro». E Safan lo lesse in presenza del re.

Shaphan the scribe told the king, saying, “Hilkiah the priest has delivered a book to me.” Then Shaphan read it before the king.

11 Q uando il re udì le parole del libro della legge, si stracciò le vesti.

When the king had heard the words of the book of the law, he tore his clothes.

12 P oi il re diede quest’ordine al sacerdote Chilchia, ad Aicam, figlio di Safan, ad Acbor, figlio di Micaia, a Safan il segretario, e ad Asaia, servitore del re:

The king commanded Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam the son of Shaphan, Achbor the son of Micaiah, Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah the king’s servant, saying,

13 « Andate a consultare il Signore per me, per il popolo e per tutto il regno di Giuda, riguardo alle parole di questo libro che si è trovato; poiché grande è l’ira del Signore che si è accesa contro di noi, perché i nostri padri non hanno ubbidito alle parole di questo libro e non hanno messo in pratica tutto quello che in esso ci è prescritto».

“Go inquire of Yahweh for me, and for the people, and for all Judah, concerning the words of this book that is found; for great is Yahweh’s wrath that is kindled against us, because our fathers have not listened to the words of this book, to do according to all that which is written concerning us.”

14 I l sacerdote Chilchia, Aicam, Acbor, Safan e Asaia andarono dalla profetessa Culda, moglie di Sallum, custode del vestiario, figlio di Ticva, figlio di Carcas. Lei abitava a Gerusalemme, nel secondo quartiere; e quando ebbero parlato con lei, lei disse loro:

So Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam, Achbor, Shaphan, and Asaiah, went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvah, the son of Harhas, keeper of the wardrobe (now she lived in Jerusalem in the second quarter); and they talked with her.

15 « Così dice il Signore, Dio d’Israele: “Dite all’uomo che vi ha mandati da me:

She said to them, “Yahweh the God of Israel says, ‘Tell the man who sent you to me,

16 ‘ Così dice il Signore: Ecco, io farò venire delle sciagure su questo luogo e sopra i suoi abitanti, conformemente a tutte le parole del libro che il re di Giuda ha letto.

“Yahweh says, ‘Behold, I will bring evil on this place, and on its inhabitants, even all the words of the book which the king of Judah has read.

17 P erché essi mi hanno abbandonato e hanno offerto incenso ad altri dèi, provocando la mia ira con tutte le opere delle loro mani; perciò la mia ira si è accesa contro questo luogo, e non si spegnerà’”.

Because they have forsaken me, and have burned incense to other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the work of their hands, therefore my wrath shall be kindled against this place, and it will not be quenched.’”

18 A l re di Giuda che vi ha mandati a consultare il Signore direte questo: “Così dice il Signore, Dio d’Israele, riguardo alle parole che tu hai udite:

But to the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of Yahweh, tell him, “Yahweh the God of Israel says, ‘Concerning the words which you have heard,

19 ‘ Poiché il tuo cuore è stato toccato, poiché ti sei umiliato davanti al Signore, udendo ciò che io ho detto contro questo luogo e contro i suoi abitanti, che saranno cioè abbandonati alla desolazione e alla maledizione; poiché ti sei stracciato le vesti e hai pianto davanti a me, anch’io ti ho ascoltato’, dice il Signore.

because your heart was tender, and you humbled yourself before Yahweh, when you heard what I spoke against this place, and against its inhabitants, that they should become a desolation and a curse, and have torn your clothes, and wept before me; I also have heard you,’ says Yahweh.

20 ‘ Ecco, io ti riunirò con i tuoi padri, e te ne andrai in pace nella tua tomba. I tuoi occhi non vedranno tutte le sciagure che io farò piombare su questo luogo’”». E quelli riferirono al re la risposta.

‘Therefore behold, I will gather you to your fathers, and you will be gathered to your grave in peace. Your eyes will not see all the evil which I will bring on this place.’”’” So they brought this message back to the king.
