1 T re giorni dopo, quando Davide e la sua gente furono giunti a Siclag, ecco che gli Amalechiti avevano fatto una scorreria verso la regione meridionale e verso Siclag; avevano preso Siclag e l’avevano incendiata;

When David and his men had come to Ziklag on the third day, the Amalekites had made a raid on the South, and on Ziklag, and had struck Ziklag, and burned it with fire,

2 a vevano fatto prigionieri le donne e tutti quelli che vi si trovavano, piccoli e grandi; non avevano ucciso nessuno, ma avevano portato via tutti e se n’erano tornati da dove erano venuti.

and had taken captive the women and all who were in it, both small and great. They didn’t kill any, but carried them off, and went their way.

3 Q uando Davide e la sua gente giunsero alla città, essa era distrutta dal fuoco e le loro mogli, i loro figli e le loro figlie erano stati condotti via prigionieri.

When David and his men came to the city, behold, it was burned with fire; and their wives, their sons, and their daughters were taken captive.

4 A llora Davide e tutti quelli che erano con lui alzarono la voce e piansero, finché non ebbero più forza di piangere.

Then David and the people who were with him lifted up their voice and wept until they had no more power to weep.

5 L e due mogli di Davide, Ainoam di Izreel e Abigail di Carmel, che era stata moglie di Nabal, erano anche loro prigioniere.

David’s two wives were taken captive, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite.

6 D avide fu grandemente angosciato: la gente parlava di lapidarlo, perché tutti erano amareggiati a motivo dei loro figli e delle loro figlie; ma Davide si fortificò nel Signore, nel suo Dio.

David was greatly distressed; for the people spoke of stoning him, because the souls of all the people were grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters; but David strengthened himself in Yahweh his God.

7 D avide disse al sacerdote Abiatar, figlio di Aimelec: «Ti prego, portami qua l’efod». Abiatar portò l’efod a Davide.

David said to Abiathar the priest, the son of Ahimelech, “Please bring the ephod here to me.” Abiathar brought the ephod to David.

8 E Davide consultò il Signore, dicendo: «Devo inseguire questa banda di predoni? La raggiungerò?» Il Signore rispose: «Inseguila, poiché certamente la raggiungerai e potrai ricuperare ogni cosa».

David inquired of Yahweh, saying, “If I pursue after this troop, will I overtake them?” He answered him, “Pursue; for you will surely overtake them, and will without fail recover all.”

9 D avide dunque andò con i seicento uomini che aveva con sé e giunsero al torrente Besor, dove quelli che erano rimasti indietro si fermarono;

So David went, he and the six hundred men who were with him, and came to the brook Besor, where those who were left behind stayed.

10 m a Davide continuò l’inseguimento con quattrocento uomini: duecento erano rimasti indietro, troppo stanchi per poter attraversare il torrente Besor.

But David pursued, he and four hundred men; for two hundred stayed behind, who were so faint that they couldn’t go over the brook Besor.

11 T rovarono per la campagna un Egiziano e lo condussero a Davide. Gli diedero del pane, che egli mangiò, e dell’acqua da bere;

They found an Egyptian in the field, and brought him to David, and gave him bread, and he ate; and they gave him water to drink.

12 e gli diedero un pezzo di schiacciata di fichi secchi e due grappoli d’uva passa. Quand’egli ebbe mangiato, si riprese, perché non aveva mangiato pane né bevuto acqua per tre giorni e tre notti.

They gave him a piece of a cake of figs, and two clusters of raisins. When he had eaten, his spirit came again to him; for he had eaten no bread, and drank no water for three days and three nights.

13 D avide gli chiese: «A chi appartieni? Di dove sei?» Quegli rispose: «Sono un giovane egiziano, servo di un Amalechita; il mio padrone mi ha abbandonato perché tre giorni fa mi ammalai.

David asked him, “To whom do you belong? Where are you from?” He said, “I am a young man of Egypt, servant to an Amalekite; and my master left me, because three days ago I got sick.

14 A bbiamo fatto una scorreria nella regione meridionale dei Cheretei, sul territorio di Giuda e nella regione meridionale di Caleb, e abbiamo incendiato Siclag».

We made a raid on the South of the Cherethites, and on that which belongs to Judah, and on the South of Caleb; and we burned Ziklag with fire.”

15 D avide gli disse: «Vuoi condurmi giù dov’è quella banda?» Egli rispose: «Giurami per il nome di Dio che non mi ucciderai e non mi darai nelle mani del mio padrone e io ti condurrò giù dov’è quella banda».

David said to him, “Will you bring me down to this troop?” He said, “Swear to me by God that you will not kill me and not deliver me up into the hands of my master, and I will bring you down to this troop.”

16 Q uando egli l’ebbe condotto là, ecco che gli Amalechiti erano sparsi dappertutto per la campagna, mangiando, bevendo e facendo festa, a motivo del gran bottino che avevano portato via dal paese dei Filistei e dal paese di Giuda.

When he had brought him down, behold, they were spread around over all the ground, eating, drinking, and dancing, because of all the great plunder that they had taken out of the land of the Philistines, and out of the land of Judah.

17 D avide diede loro addosso dalla sera di quel giorno fino alla sera dell’indomani; e non uno ne scampò, tranne quattrocento giovani, che montarono sui cammelli e fuggirono.

David struck them from the twilight even to the evening of the next day. Not a man of them escaped from there, except four hundred young men, who rode on camels and fled.

18 D avide ricuperò tutto quello che gli Amalechiti avevano portato via e liberò anche le sue due mogli.

David recovered all that the Amalekites had taken; and David rescued his two wives.

19 N on vi mancò nessuno, né piccoli né grandi, né figli né figlie, e nulla del bottino, nulla che gli Amalechiti avessero preso. Davide ricondusse via tutto.

There was nothing lacking to them, neither small nor great, neither sons nor daughters, neither plunder, nor anything that they had taken to them. David brought back all.

20 D avide riprese anche tutte le greggi e tutti gli armenti; quelli che conducevano questo bestiame e camminavano alla sua testa dicevano: «Questo è il bottino di Davide!»

David took all the flocks and the herds, which they drove before those other livestock, and said, “This is David’s plunder.”

21 P oi Davide tornò verso quei duecento uomini che per la grande stanchezza non avevano potuto stargli dietro e che egli aveva fatto rimanere al torrente Besor. Quelli andarono a incontrare Davide e la gente che era con lui. Davide si avvicinò a loro e si informò sulla loro salute.

David came to the two hundred men, who were so faint that they could not follow David, whom also they had made to stay at the brook Besor; and they went out to meet David, and to meet the people who were with him. When David came near to the people, he greeted them.

22 A llora tutti i malvagi e i perversi fra gli uomini che erano andati con Davide presero a dire: «Dato che costoro non sono venuti con noi, non daremo loro nulla del bottino che abbiamo ricuperato; ciascuno di loro riavrà sua moglie e i suoi figli; se li portino via e se ne vadano!»

Then all the wicked men and base fellows, of those who went with David, answered and said, “Because they didn’t go with us, we will not give them anything of the plunder that we have recovered, except to every man his wife and his children, that he may lead them away, and depart.”

23 M a Davide disse: «Non fate così, fratelli miei, riguardo alle cose che il Signore ci ha date: egli ci ha protetti e ha dato nelle nostre mani la banda che era venuta contro di noi.

Then David said, “Do not do so, my brothers, with that which Yahweh has given to us, who has preserved us, and delivered the troop that came against us into our hand.

24 C hi vi darebbe retta in questa cosa? La parte di chi scende alla battaglia dev’essere uguale alla parte di chi rimane con i bagagli; faranno tra loro parti uguali».

Who will listen to you in this matter? For as his share is who goes down to the battle, so shall his share be who stays with the baggage. They shall share alike.”

25 D a quel giorno in poi si fece così; Davide ne fece in Israele una legge e una norma, che durano fino a oggi.

It was so from that day forward, that he made it a statute and an ordinance for Israel to this day.

26 Q uando Davide fu tornato a Siclag, mandò parte di quel bottino agli anziani di Giuda suoi amici, dicendo: «Eccovi un dono che viene dal bottino preso ai nemici del Signore ».

When David came to Ziklag, he sent some of the plunder to the elders of Judah, even to his friends, saying, “Behold, a present for you from the plunder of Yahweh’s enemies.”

27 N e mandò a quelli di Betel, a quelli di Ramot della regione meridionale, a quelli di Iattir,

He sent it to those who were in Bethel, to those who were in Ramoth of the South, to those who were in Jattir,

28 a quelli di Aroer, a quelli di Sifmot, a quelli di Estemoa,

to those who were in Aroer, to those who were in Siphmoth, to those who were in Eshtemoa,

29 a quelli di Racal, a quelli delle città degli Ierameeliti, a quelli delle città dei Chenei,

to those who were in Racal, to those who were in the cities of the Jerahmeelites, to those who were in the cities of the Kenites,

30 a quelli di Corma, a quelli di Cor-Asan, a quelli di Atac,

to those who were in Hormah, to those who were in Borashan, to those who were in Athach,

31 a quelli di Ebron e a quelli di tutti i luoghi che Davide aveva percorso con la sua gente.

to those who were in Hebron, and to all the places where David himself and his men used to stay.
