1 C ’era tra i farisei un uomo chiamato Nicodemo, uno dei capi dei Giudei.

Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.

2 E gli venne di notte da lui e gli disse: «Rabbì, noi sappiamo che tu sei un dottore venuto da Dio; perché nessuno può fare questi segni che tu fai, se Dio non è con lui».

The same came to him by night, and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do, unless God is with him.”

3 G esù gli rispose: «In verità, in verità ti dico che se uno non è nato di nuovo, non può vedere il regno di Dio».

Jesus answered him, “Most certainly, I tell you, unless one is born anew, he can’t see God’s Kingdom.”

4 N icodemo gli disse: «Come può un uomo nascere quando è già vecchio? Può egli entrare una seconda volta nel grembo di sua madre e nascere?»

Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb, and be born?”

5 G esù rispose: «In verità, in verità ti dico che se uno non è nato d’acqua e di Spirito, non può entrare nel regno di Dio.

Jesus answered, “Most certainly I tell you, unless one is born of water and spirit, he can’t enter into God’s Kingdom!

6 Q uello che è nato dalla carne è carne, e quello che è nato dallo Spirito è spirito.

That which is born of the flesh is flesh. That which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

7 N on ti meravigliare se ti ho detto: “Bisogna che nasciate di nuovo ”.

Don’t marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born anew.’

8 I l vento soffia dove vuole, e tu ne odi il rumore, ma non sai né da dove viene né dove va; così è di chiunque è nato dallo Spirito».

The wind blows where it wants to, and you hear its sound, but don’t know where it comes from and where it is going. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

9 N icodemo replicò e gli disse: «Come possono avvenire queste cose?»

Nicodemus answered him, “How can these things be?”

10 G esù gli rispose: «Tu sei maestro d’Israele e non sai queste cose?

Jesus answered him, “Are you the teacher of Israel, and don’t understand these things?

11 I n verità, in verità ti dico che noi parliamo di ciò che sappiamo, e testimoniamo di ciò che abbiamo visto; ma voi non ricevete la nostra testimonianza.

Most certainly I tell you, we speak that which we know, and testify of that which we have seen, and you don’t receive our witness.

12 S e vi ho parlato delle cose terrene e non credete, come crederete se vi parlerò delle cose celesti?

If I told you earthly things and you don’t believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things?

13 N essuno è salito in cielo, se non colui che è disceso dal cielo: il Figlio dell’uomo.

No one has ascended into heaven, but he who descended out of heaven, the Son of Man, who is in heaven.

14 « E come Mosè innalzò il serpente nel deserto, così bisogna che il Figlio dell’uomo sia innalzato,

As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up,

15 a ffinché chiunque crede in lui abbia vita eterna.

that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

16 P erché Dio ha tanto amato il mondo, che ha dato il suo unigenito Figlio, affinché chiunque crede in lui non perisca, ma abbia vita eterna.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

17 I nfatti Dio non ha mandato suo Figlio nel mondo per giudicare il mondo, ma perché il mondo sia salvato per mezzo di lui.

For God didn’t send his Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world should be saved through him.

18 C hi crede in lui non è giudicato; chi non crede è già giudicato, perché non ha creduto nel nome dell’unigenito Figlio di Dio.

He who believes in him is not judged. He who doesn’t believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the one and only Son of God.

19 I l giudizio è questo: la luce è venuta nel mondo, e gli uomini hanno amato le tenebre più della luce, perché le loro opere erano malvagie.

This is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light; for their works were evil.

20 P erché chiunque fa cose malvagie odia la luce e non viene alla luce, affinché le sue opere non siano scoperte;

For everyone who does evil hates the light, and doesn’t come to the light, lest his works would be exposed.

21 m a chi mette in pratica la verità viene alla luce, affinché le sue opere siano manifestate, perché sono fatte in Dio». Nuova testimonianza di Giovanni il battista

But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his works may be revealed, that they have been done in God.”

22 D opo queste cose, Gesù andò con i suoi discepoli nelle campagne della Giudea; là si trattenne con loro, e battezzava.

After these things, Jesus came with his disciples into the land of Judea. He stayed there with them, and baptized.

23 A nche Giovanni stava battezzando a Enon, presso Salim, perché là c’era molta acqua; e la gente veniva a farsi battezzare.

John also was baptizing in Enon near Salim, because there was much water there. They came, and were baptized.

24 G iovanni, infatti, non era ancora stato messo in prigione.

For John was not yet thrown into prison.

25 N acque dunque una discussione sulla purificazione, tra i discepoli di Giovanni e un Giudeo.

There arose therefore a questioning on the part of John’s disciples with some Jews about purification.

26 E andarono da Giovanni e gli dissero: «Rabbì, colui che era con te di là dal Giordano, e al quale rendesti testimonianza, eccolo che battezza, e tutti vanno da lui».

They came to John, and said to him, “Rabbi, he who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you have testified, behold, the same baptizes, and everyone is coming to him.”

27 G iovanni rispose: «L’uomo non può ricevere nulla se non gli è dato dal cielo.

John answered, “A man can receive nothing, unless it has been given him from heaven.

28 V oi stessi mi siete testimoni che ho detto: “Io non sono il Cristo, ma sono stato mandato davanti a lui”.

You yourselves testify that I said, ‘I am not the Christ,’ but, ‘I have been sent before him.’

29 C olui che ha la sposa è lo sposo, ma l’amico dello sposo, che è presente e lo ascolta, si rallegra vivamente alla voce dello sposo; questa gioia, che è la mia, è ora completa.

He who has the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice. This, my joy, therefore is made full.

30 B isogna che egli cresca e che io diminuisca.

He must increase, but I must decrease.

31 C olui che viene dall’alto è sopra tutti; colui che viene dalla terra è della terra e parla come uno che è della terra; colui che viene dal cielo è sopra tutti.

He who comes from above is above all. He who is from the earth belongs to the earth, and speaks of the earth. He who comes from heaven is above all.

32 E gli rende testimonianza di quello che ha visto e udito, ma nessuno riceve la sua testimonianza.

What he has seen and heard, of that he testifies; and no one receives his witness.

33 C hi ha ricevuto la sua testimonianza ha confermato che Dio è veritiero.

He who has received his witness has set his seal to this, that God is true.

34 P erché colui che Dio ha mandato dice le parole di Dio; infatti non dà lo Spirito con misura.

For he whom God has sent speaks the words of God; for God gives the Spirit without measure.

35 I l Padre ama il Figlio e gli ha dato ogni cosa in mano.

The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into his hand.

36 C hi crede nel Figlio ha vita eterna; chi invece rifiuta di credere al Figlio non vedrà la vita, ma l’ira di Dio rimane su di lui».

One who believes in the Son has eternal life, but one who disobeys the Son won’t see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.”
