1 R ebuke not an elder sharply, but exhort as a father, younger as brethren,

No reprendas al anciano, sino exhórtale como a padre; a los más jóvenes, como a hermanos;

2 e lder women as mothers, younger women as sisters, with all purity.

a las ancianas, como a madres; a las jovencitas, como a hermanas, con toda pureza.

3 H onour widows who are really widows;

Honra a las viudas que en verdad lo son.

4 b ut if any widow have children or descendants, let them learn first to be pious as regards their own house, and to render a return on their side to parents; for this is acceptable in the sight of God.

Pero si alguna viuda tiene hijos, o nietos, aprendan éstos primero a ser piadosos para con su propia familia, y a recompensar a sus padres; porque esto es lo bueno y agradable delante de Dios.

5 N ow she who a widow indeed, and is left alone, has put hope in God, and continues in supplications and prayers night and day.

Mas la que en verdad es viuda y ha quedado sola, ha puesto su esperanza en Dios, y persevera en súplicas y oraciones noche y día.

6 B ut she that lives in habits of self-indulgence is dead living.

Pero la que se entrega a los placeres, viviendo está muerta.

7 A nd these things enjoin, that they may be irreproachable.

Manda también estas cosas, para que sean irreprensibles;

8 B ut if any one does not provide for his own, and specially for those of house, he has denied the faith, and is worse than the unbeliever.

porque si alguno no provee para los suyos, y especialmente para los de su casa, ha negado la fe, y es peor que un incrédulo.

9 L et a widow be put upon the list, being of not less than sixty years, wife of one man,

Sea puesta en la lista sólo la viuda no menor de sesenta años, que haya sido esposa de un solo marido,

10 b orne witness to in good works, if she have brought up children, if she have exercised hospitality, if she have washed saints' feet, if she have imparted relief to the distressed, if she have diligently followed every good work.

que tenga testimonio de buenas obras; si ha criado hijos; si ha practicado la hospitalidad; si ha lavado los pies de los santos; si ha socorrido a los afligidos; si ha estado dedicada a toda buena obra.

11 B ut younger widows decline; for when they grow wanton against Christ, they desire to marry,

Pero no admitas viudas más jóvenes; porque cuando, impulsadas por sus deseos, se rebelan contra Cristo, quieren casarse,

12 b eing guilty, because they have cast off their first faith.

incurriendo así en condenación, por haber dejado a un lado su promesa anterior.

13 A nd, at the same time, they learn also idle, going about to people's houses; and not only idle, but also gossipers and meddlers, speaking things not becoming.

Y al mismo tiempo aprenden a ser ociosas, andando de casa en casa; y no solamente ociosas, sino también chismosas y entremetidas, hablando lo que no deben.

14 I will therefore that the younger marry, bear children, rule the house, give no occasion to the adversary in respect of reproach.

Quiero, pues, que las viudas jóvenes se casen, críen hijos, gobiernen su casa; que no den al adversario ningún pretexto para hablar mal.

15 F or already some have turned aside after Satan.

Porque ya algunas se han apartado en pos de Satanás.

16 I f any believing man or woman have widows, let them impart relief to them, and let not the assembly be charged, that it may impart relief to those widows indeed.

Si algún creyente o alguna creyente tiene viudas, que las mantenga, y no sea gravada la iglesia, a fin de que haya lo suficiente para las que en verdad son viudas.

17 L et the elders who take the lead well be esteemed worthy of double honour, specially those labouring in word and teaching;

Los ancianos que gobiernan bien, sean tenidos por dignos de doble honor, principalmente los que trabajan en predicar y enseñar.

18 f or the scripture says, Thou shalt not muzzle an ox that treadeth out corn, and, The workman worthy of his hire.

Pues la Escritura dice: No pondrás bozal al buey que trilla; y: Digno es el obrero de su salario.

19 A gainst an elder receive not an accusation unless where there are two or three witnesses.

Contra un anciano no admitas acusación a no ser sobre la base de dos o tres testigos.

20 T hose that sin convict before all, that the rest also may have fear.

A los que persisten en pecar, repréndelos delante de todos, para que los demás tengan temor.

21 I testify before God and Christ Jesus and the elect angels, that thou keep these things without prejudice, doing nothing by favour.

Te conjuro delante de Dios y del Señor Jesucristo, y de sus ángeles escogidos, que guardes estas cosas sin prejuicios, no haciendo nada con parcialidad.

22 L ay hands quickly on no man, nor partake in others' sins. Keep thyself pure.

No impongas con ligereza las manos a ninguno, ni participes en pecados ajenos. Consérvate puro.

23 D rink no longer only water, but use a little wine on account of thy stomach and thy frequent illnesses.

Ya no bebas agua, sino usa de un poco de vino por causa de tu estómago y de tus frecuentes enfermedades.

24 O f some men the sins are manifest beforehand, going before to judgment, and some also they follow after.

Los pecados de algunos hombres se hacen patentes antes que ellos vengan a juicio, mas a otros se les descubren después.

25 I n like manner good works also are manifest beforehand, and those that are otherwise cannot be hid.

Asimismo se hacen manifiestas las buenas obras; y las que son de otra manera, no pueden permanecer ocultas.
