1 A nd I returned and saw all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and behold, the tears of the oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors was power, and they had no comforter.

Me volví y vi todas las violencias que se hacen debajo del sol; y he aquí las lágrimas de los oprimidos, sin tener quien los consuele; y la violencia estaba en la mano de sus opresores, y para ellos no había consolador.

2 T hen I praised the dead who are already dead more than the living who are yet alive;

Y alabé yo a los difuntos, los que ya murieron, más que a los vivientes, los que viven todavía.

3 a nd more fortunate than both is he who hath not yet been, who hath not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.

Y tuve por más feliz que unos y otros al que no ha existido aún, que no ha visto las malas obras que se hacen debajo del sol.

4 A nd I saw all labour, and all success of work, that it is man's jealousy of his neighbour. This also is vanity and pursuit of the wind.

He visto asimismo que todo esfuerzo y el éxito de toda obra despierta la envidia del hombre contra su prójimo. También esto es vanidad y esfuerzo inútil.

5 T he fool foldeth his hands together, and eateth his own flesh.

El necio cruza sus manos y come su misma carne.

6 B etter is a handful with quietness, than both hands full with labour and pursuit of the wind.

Más vale un puño lleno con descanso, que ambos puños llenos con fatiga y esfuerzo inútil.

7 A nd I returned and saw vanity under the sun.

Yo me volví otra vez, y vi otra vanidad debajo del sol.

8 T here is one and without a second; also he hath neither son nor brother: yet is there no end of all his labour, neither is his eye satisfied with riches, and, For whom then am I labouring, and depriving my soul of good? This also is vanity and a grievous occupation.

Hay un hombre que está solo y sin sucesor, que no tiene hijo ni hermano; pero nunca cesa de trabajar, ni sus ojos se sacian de sus riquezas, ni se pregunta: ¿Para quién trabajo yo, y privo a mi alma del bienestar? También esto es vanidad, y triste tarea.

9 T wo are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour.

Mejor es dos juntos que uno solo; porque tienen mejor paga de su trabajo.

10 F or if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him that is alone when he falleth, and who hath not another to lift him up!

Si cae uno, el otro levantará a su compañero; pero ¡ay del solo! que si se cae, no habrá otro que lo levante.

11 A gain, if two lie together, then they have warmth; but how can one alone be warm?

También si dos duermen juntos, se calentarán mutuamente; mas ¿cómo se calentará uno solo?

12 A nd if a overpower the one, the two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

Si alguno prevalece contra uno, dos le resistirán; y el cordel de tres hilos no se rompe fácilmente.

13 B etter is a poor but wise youth than an old and foolish king, who knoweth no more how to be admonished.

Más vale un muchacho pobre y sabio, que el rey viejo y necio que no admite consejos;

14 F or out of the prison-house he came forth to reign, although he was born poor in his kingdom.

porque de la cárcel saldrá aquél para reinar, aunque en su reino nació pobre.

15 I saw all the living that walk under the sun, with the child, the second, that should stand up in his stead.

Vi a todos los que viven debajo del sol caminando con el muchacho sucesor, que estará en lugar de aquél.

16 n o end of all the people, of all that stood before them; those however that come after shall not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and a striving after the wind.

No tenía fin la muchedumbre del pueblo que le seguía; sin embargo, los que vengan después tampoco estarán contentos de él. Y esto es también vanidad y esfuerzo inútil.
