1 N ow there was a certain sick, Lazarus of Bethany, of the village of Mary and Martha her sister.

Estaba entonces enfermo uno llamado Lázaro, de Betania, la aldea de María y de Marta su hermana.

2 I t was Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.

(María, cuyo hermano Lázaro estaba enfermo, fue la que ungió al Señor con perfume, y le enjugó los pies con sus cabellos.)

3 T he sisters therefore sent to him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.

Enviaron, pues, las hermanas para decir a Jesús: Señor, mira, el que amas está enfermo.

4 B ut when Jesus heard, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified by it.

Oyéndolo Jesús, dijo: Esta enfermedad no es para muerte, sino para la gloria de Dios, para que el Hijo de Dios sea glorificado por medio de ella.

5 N ow Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.

Y amaba Jesús a Marta, a su hermana y a Lázaro.

6 W hen therefore he heard, He is sick, he remained two days then in the place where he was.

Cuando oyó, pues, que estaba enfermo, se quedó dos días más en el lugar donde estaba.

7 T hen after this he says to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again.

Luego, después de esto, dijo a los discípulos: Vamos a Judea otra vez.

8 T he disciples say to him, Rabbi, now the Jews sought to stone thee, and goest thou thither again?

Le dijeron los discípulos: Rabí, ahora procuraban los judíos apedrearte, ¿y otra vez vas allá?

9 J esus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any one walk in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world;

Respondió Jesús: ¿No son doce las horas del día? El que anda de día, no tropieza, porque ve la luz de este mundo;

10 b ut if any one walk in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.

pero el que anda de noche, tropieza, porque no hay luz en él.

11 T hese things said he; and after this he says to them, Lazarus, our friend, is fallen asleep, but I go that I may awake him out of sleep.

Dicho esto, les dijo después: Nuestro amigo Lázaro se ha quedado dormido; mas voy para despertarle.

12 T he disciples therefore said to him, Lord, if he be fallen asleep, he will get well.

Dijeron entonces sus discípulos: Señor, si está dormido, sanará.

13 B ut Jesus spoke of his death, but they thought that he spoke of the rest of sleep.

Pero Jesús se había referido a la muerte de Lázaro; y a ellos les pareció que hablaba del reposar del sueño.

14 J esus therefore then said to them plainly, Lazarus has died.

Entonces Jesús les dijo abiertamente: Lázaro ha muerto;

15 A nd I rejoice on your account that I was not there, in order that ye may believe. But let us go to him.

y me alegro por vosotros, de no haber estado allí, para que creáis; pero vayamos hasta él.

16 T homas therefore, called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.

Dijo entonces Tomás, llamado Dídimo, a sus condiscípulos: Vamos también nosotros, para que muramos con él. Jesucristo, la resurrección y la vida

17 J esus therefore arriving found him to have been four days already in the tomb.

Vino, pues, Jesús, y halló que hacía ya cuatro días que Lázaro estaba en el sepulcro.

18 N ow Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia off,

Betania estaba cerca de Jerusalén, como a quince estadios;

19 a nd many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, that they might console them concerning their brother.

y muchos de los judíos habían venido a Marta y a María, para consolarlas por su hermano.

20 M artha then, when she heard Jesus is coming, went to meet him; but Mary sat in the house.

Entonces Marta, cuando oyó que Jesús venía, salió a su encuentro, mientras María se quedaba sentada en casa.

21 M artha therefore said to Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died;

Y Marta dijo a Jesús: Señor, si hubieses estado aquí, mi hermano no habría muerto.

22 b ut even now I know, that whatsoever thou shalt ask of God, God will give thee.

Mas también sé ahora que todo lo que pidas a Dios, Dios te lo dará.

23 J esus says to her, Thy brother shall rise again.

Jesús le dijo: Tu hermano resucitará.

24 M artha says to him, I know that he will rise again in the resurrection in the last day.

Marta le dijo: Ya sé que resucitará en la resurrección, en el último día.

25 J esus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life: he that believes on me, though he have died, shall live;

Le dijo Jesús: Yo soy la resurrección y la vida; el que cree en mí, aunque haya muerto, vivirá.

26 a nd every one who lives and believes on me shall never die. Believest thou this?

Y todo aquel que vive y cree en mí, no morirá eternamente. ¿Crees esto?

27 S he says to him, Yea, Lord; I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, who should come into the world.

Le dijo: Sí, Señor; yo he creído que tú eres el Cristo, el Hijo de Dios, que has venido al mundo. Jesús llora ante la tumba de Lázaro

28 A nd having said this, she went away and called her sister Mary secretly, saying, The teacher is come and calls thee.

Habiendo dicho esto, fue y llamó a María su hermana, diciéndole en secreto: El Maestro está aquí y te llama.

29 S he, when she heard, rises up quickly and comes to him.

Ella, en cuanto lo oyó, se levantó de prisa y vino a él.

30 N ow Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was in the place where Martha came to meet him.

Jesús todavía no había entrado en la aldea, sino que estaba en el lugar donde Marta había salido a recibirle.

31 T he Jews therefore who were with her in the house and consoling her, seeing Mary that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, saying, She goes to the tomb, that she may weep there.

Entonces los judíos que estaban en casa con ella y la consolaban, al ver que María se había levantado de prisa y había salido, la siguieron, diciendo: Va al sepulcro a llorar allí.

32 M ary therefore, when she came where Jesus was, seeing him, fell at his feet, saying to him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

María, cuando llegó adonde estaba Jesús, al verle, se arrojó a sus pies, diciéndole: Señor, si hubieses estado aquí, no habría muerto mi hermano.

33 J esus therefore, when he saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, was deeply moved in spirit, and was troubled,

Jesús entonces, al verla llorando, y a los judíos que la acompañaban, también llorando, se estremeció interiormente y se conmovió,

34 a nd said, Where have ye put him? They say to him, Lord, come and see.

y dijo: ¿Dónde le habéis puesto? Le dijeron: Señor, ven y ve.

35 J esus wept.

Jesús lloró.

36 T he Jews therefore said, Behold how he loved him!

Dijeron entonces los judíos: Mirad cómo le amaba.

37 A nd some of them said, Could not this, who has opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that this also should not have died?

Y algunos de ellos dijeron: ¿No podía éste, que abrió los ojos del ciego, haber hecho también que Lázaro no muriera? Resurrección de Lázaro

38 J esus therefore, again deeply moved in himself, comes to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.

Jesús, profundamente conmovido otra vez, vino al sepulcro. Era una cueva, y tenía una piedra puesta encima.

39 J esus says, Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of the dead, says to him, Lord, he stinks already, for he is four days.

Dijo Jesús: Quitad la piedra. Marta, la hermana del que había muerto, le dijo: Señor, hiede ya, porque es de cuatro días.

40 J esus says to her, Did I not say to thee, that if thou shouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?

Jesús le dijo: ¿No te he dicho que si crees, verás la gloria de Dios?

41 T hey took therefore the stone away. And Jesus lifted up his eyes on high and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me;

Quitaron, pues, la piedra de donde había sido puesto el muerto. Y Jesús, alzando los ojos a lo alto, dijo: Padre, gracias te doy por haberme oído.

42 b ut I knew that thou always hearest me; but on account of the crowd who stand around I have said, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.

Yo sabía que siempre me oyes; pero lo dije por causa de la multitud que está alrededor, para que crean que tú me has enviado.

43 A nd having said this, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.

Y habiendo dicho esto, clamó a gran voz: ¡Lázaro, sal fuera!

44 A nd the dead came forth, bound feet and hands with graveclothes, and his face was bound round with a handkerchief. Jesus says to them, Loose him and let him go.

Y el que había muerto salió, atadas las manos y los pies con vendas, y el rostro envuelto en un sudario. Jesús les dijo: Desatadle, y dejadle ir. El complot para matar a Jesús

45 M any therefore of the Jews who came to Mary and saw what he had done, believed on him;

Entonces muchos de los judíos que habían venido para acompañar a María, y vieron lo que hizo Jesús, creyeron en él.

46 b ut some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.

Pero algunos de ellos fueron a los fariseos y les dijeron lo que Jesús había hecho.

47 T he chief priests, therefore, and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, What do we? for this man does many signs.

Entonces los principales sacerdotes y los fariseos reunieron el sanedrín, y dijeron: ¿Qué hacemos? Porque este hombre hace muchas señales.

48 I f we let him thus alone, all will believe on him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.

Si le dejamos así, todos creerán en él; y vendrán los romanos, y destruirán nuestro lugar santo y nuestra nación.

49 B ut a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, Ye know nothing

Entonces Caifás, uno de ellos, que era sumo sacerdote aquel año, les dijo: Vosotros no sabéis nada;

50 n or consider that it is profitable for you that one man die for the people, and not that the whole nation perish.

ni os dais cuenta de que nos conviene que un solo hombre muera por el pueblo, y no que toda la nación perezca.

51 B ut this he did not say of himself; but, being high priest that year, prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation;

Esto no lo dijo por sí mismo, sino que como era el sumo sacerdote aquel año, profetizó que Jesús iba a morir por la nación;

52 a nd not for the nation only, but that he should also gather together into one the children of God who were scattered abroad.

y no solamente por la nación, sino también para congregar en uno a los hijos de Dios que estaban dispersos.

53 F rom that day therefore they took counsel that they might kill him.

Así que, desde aquel día acordaron matarle.

54 J esus therefore walked no longer openly among the Jews, but went away thence into the country near the desert, to a city called Ephraim, and there he sojourned with the disciples.

Por tanto, Jesús ya no andaba abiertamente entre los judíos, sino que se alejó de allí a la región contigua al desierto, a una ciudad llamada Efraín; y se quedó allí con sus discípulos.

55 B ut the passover of the Jews was near, and many went up to Jerusalem out of the country before the passover, that they might purify themselves.

Y estaba cerca la pascua de los judíos; y muchos subieron de aquella región a Jerusalén antes de la pascua, para purificarse.

56 T hey sought therefore Jesus, and said among themselves, standing in the temple, What do ye think? that he will not come to the feast?

Y buscaban a Jesús, y estando ellos en el templo, se preguntaban unos a otros: ¿Qué os parece? ¿No vendrá a la fiesta?

57 N ow the chief priests and the Pharisees had given commandment that if any one knew where he was, he should make it known, that they might take him.

Y los principales sacerdotes y los fariseos habían dado orden de que si alguno supiese dónde estaba, lo denunciara, para que le prendiesen.
