1 ¶ Better is the poor that walks in his integrity than he that is perverse in his lips and is a fool.

Mai mult preţuieşte săracul, care umblă în neprihănirea lui, decît un bogat cu buze stricate şi nebun. -

2 ¶ That the soul be without wisdom is not good, and he that hastens with his feet sins.

Lipsa de ştiinţă este o pagubă pentru cineva, şi cine aleargă neghiobeşte înainte, o nimereşte rău. -

3 ¶ The foolishness of man perverts his way, and his heart is wroth against the LORD.

Nebunia omului îi suceşte calea, şi apoi cîrteşte împotriva Domnului cu inima lui. -

4 ¶ Wealth makes many friends, but the poor is separated from his neighbour.

Bogăţia aduce un mare număr de prieteni, dar săracul este părăsit de prietenul lui. -

5 ¶ A false witness shall not go unpunished, and he that speaks lies shall not escape.

Martorul mincinos nu rămîne nepedepsit, şi cel ce spune minciuni nu va scăpa. -

6 ¶ Many will intreat the favour of the prince, but every man is a friend to him that gives.

Omul darnic are mulţi linguşitori, şi toţi sînt prieteni cu cel ce dă daruri. -

7 A ll the brethren of the poor hate him; how much more shall his friends separate themselves from him? He shall seek their friendship and not find it.

Toţi fraţii săracului îl urăsc; cu cît mai mult se depărtează prietenii lui de el! El se îndreaptă spre ei cu vorbe rugătoare, dar ei se fac nevăzuţi. -

8 ¶ He that gets wisdom loves his own soul; he keeps intelligence that he might find that which is good.

Cine capătă înţelepciune, îşi iubeşte sufletul; cine păstrează priceperea, găseşte fericirea. -

9 ¶ The false witness shall not go unpunished, and he that speaks lies shall perish.

Martorul mincinos nu rămîne nepedepsit, şi celce spune minciuni va pieri, -

10 ¶ Delight is not suitable for a fool; much less for a slave to have rule over princes.

Unui nebun nu -i şade bine să trăiască în desfătări, cu atît mai puţin unui rob să stăpînească peste voivozi. -

11 ¶ The discretion of a man defers his anger, and it is his glory to pass over a transgression.

Înţelepciunea face pe om răbdător, şi este o cinste pentru el să uite greşelile. -

12 ¶ The king’s wrath is as the roaring of a lion, but his favour is as dew upon the grass.

Mînia împăratului este ca răcnetul unui leu, şi bunăvoinţa lui este ca roua pe iarbă. -

13 ¶ A foolish son is a pain unto his father, and the contentions of a wife are a continual dripping.

Un fiu nebun este o nenorocire pentru tatăl său, şi o nevastă gîlcevitoare este ca o straşină de pe care picură într'una. -

14 ¶ House and riches are the inheritance from fathers, but the prudent wife is from the LORD.

Casa şi averea le moştenim dela părinţi, dar o nevastă pricepută este un dar dela Domnul. -

15 ¶ Slothfulness casts into a deep sleep, and the negligent soul shall suffer hunger.

Lenea te cufundă într'un somn adînc, şi sufletul molatic sufere de foame. -

16 ¶ He that keeps the commandment keeps his own soul, but he that despises his ways shall die.

Cine păzeşte porunca, îşi păzeşte sufletul; cine nu veghează asupra căii sale, va muri. -

17 ¶ He that gives unto the poor lends unto the LORD, and he will give him his reward.

Cine are milă de sărac, împrumută pe Domnul, şi El îi va răsplăti binefacerea. -

18 ¶ Chasten thy son while there is hope, but do not stir up thy soul to destroy him.

Pedepseşte-ţi fiul, căci tot mai este nădejde, dar nu dori să -l omori. -

19 ¶ A man of great wrath shall suffer the consequences, for even if thou deliver him, yet thou must do it again.

Cel pe care -l apucă mînia trebuie să-şi ia pedeapsa; căci dacă -l scoţi din ea, va trebui să mai faci odată lucrul acesta. -

20 ¶ Hear counsel, and receive chastening that thou may be wise in thy old age.

Ascultă sfaturile, şi primeşte învăţătura, ca să fii înţelept pe viitor! -

21 ¶ There are many thoughts in the heart of man; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD shall stand.

Omul face multe planuri în inima lui, dar hotărîrea Domnului, aceea se împlineşte. -

22 ¶ Contentment is unto men to show mercy, but it is better to do it unto the poor than to the liar.

Ceeace face farmecul unui om este bunătatea lui; şi mai mult preţuieşte un sărac decît nu mincinos. -

23 ¶ The fear of the LORD is unto life, and he that has it shall live satisfied; he shall not be visited with evil.

Frica de Domnul duce la viaţă, şi celce o are, petrece noaptea sătul, fără să fie cercetat de nenorocire. -

24 ¶ The slothful man hides his hand in his bosom and will not so much as bring it to his mouth again.

Leneşul îşi vîră mîna în strachină, şi n'o duce înapoi la gură. -

25 ¶ Smite a scorner, and the simple will become prudent, and reproving one that has understanding, he will understand knowledge.

Loveşte pe batjocoritor, şi prostul se va face înţelept; mustră... pe omul priceput, şi va înţelege ştiinţa. -

26 ¶ He that steals from his father and chases away his mother is a son that causes shame and brings reproach.

Cine jăfuieşte pe tatăl său şi izgoneşte pe mamă-sa, este un fiu care aduce ruşine şi ocară. -

27 ¶ Cease, my son, to hear the teaching that induces one to deviate from the reasons of wisdom.

Încetează, fiule, să mai asculţi învăţătura, dacă ea te depărtează de învăţăturile înţelepte. -

28 ¶ A witness of Belial shall scorn judgment, and the mouth of the wicked shall cover iniquity.

Un martor stricat îşi bate joc de dreptate, şi gura celor răi înghite nelegiuirea. -

29 ¶ Judgments are prepared for scorners and stripes for the back of fools.

Pedepsele sînt pregătite pentru batjocoritori, şi loviturile pentru spinările nebunilor.
