1 ¶ Know ye not, brethren (for I speak to those that know the law), that the law has dominion over a man only as long as he lives?

Nu ştiţi, fraţilor, -căci vorbesc unor oameni cari cunosc Legea-că Legea are stăpînire asupra omului cîtă vreme trăieşte el?

2 F or the woman who is subject to a husband is obligated to the law so long as the husband lives; but if the husband dies, she is free from the law of the husband.

Căci femeia măritată este legată prin Lege de bărbatul ei cîtă vreme trăieşte el; dar dacă -i moare bărbatul, este deslegată de legea bărbatului ei.

3 S o then if, while her husband lives, she belongs to another man, she shall be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from that law so that she is no adulteress if she belongs to another man.

Dacă deci, cînd îi trăieşte bărbatul, ea se mărită după altul, se va chema preacurvă; dar dacă -i moare bărbatul, este deslegată de Lege, aşa că nu mai este preacurvă, dacă se mărită după altul.

4 L ikewise ye also, my brethren, are become dead to the law in the body of the Christ that ye should belong to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.

Tot astfel, fraţii mei, prin trupul lui Hristos, şi voi aţi murit în ce priveşte Legea, ca să fiţi ai altuia, adică ai Celuice a înviat din morţi; şi aceasta, ca să aducem roadă pentru Dumnezeu.

5 F or while we were in the flesh, the affections of the sins which were by the law worked in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.

Căci, cînd trăiam supt firea noastră pămîntească, patimile păcatelor, aţîţate de Lege, lucrau în mădularele noastre, şi ne făceau să aducem roade pentru moarte.

6 B ut now we are free from the law of death in which we were held, that we might serve in newness of Spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.

Dar acum, am fost izbăviţi de Lege, şi sîntem morţi faţă de Legea aceasta, care ne ţinea robi, pentruca să slujim lui Dumnezeu într'un duh nou, iar nu după vechea slovă.

7 ¶ What shall we say then? Is the law sin? No, in no wise. But, I did not know sin except by the law; for neither would I have known lust if the law did not say, Thou shalt not covet.

Deci ce vom zice? Legea este ceva păcătos? Nici de cum! Dimpotrivă, păcatul nu l-am cunoscut decît prin Lege. De pildă, n'aş fi cunoscut pofta, dacă Legea nu mi-ar fi spus:,, Să nu pofteşti!``

8 T hen sin, when there was occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of lust. For without the law sin was as if it were dormant.

Apoi păcatul a luat prilejul, şi a făcut să se nască în mine prin porunca tot felul de pofte; căci fără Lege, păcatul este mort.

9 S o that without the law I lived for some time; but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died.

Odinioară, fiindcă eram fără Lege, trăiam; dar cînd a venit porunca, păcatul a înviat, şi eu am murit.

10 A nd I found that the same commandment, which was unto life, was mortal unto me.

Şi porunca, ea, care trebuia să-mi dea viaţa, mi -a pricinuit moartea.

11 F or sin, having had occasion, deceived me by the commandment and by it killed me.

Pentrucă păcatul a luat prilejul prin ea m'a amăgit, şi prin însăş, porunca aceasta m'a lovit cu moartea.

12 S o the law is truly holy, and the commandment holy and just and good.

Aşa că Legea, negreşit, este sfîntă, şi porunca este sfîntă, dreaptă şi bună.

13 W as then that which is good made death unto me? No, in no wise. But sin, to show itself sin by that which is good, worked death in me, making sin exceedingly sinful by the commandment.

Atunci, un lucru bun mi -a dat moartea? Nicidecum. Dar păcatul, tocmai ca să iasă la iveală ca păcat, mi -a dat moartea printr'un lucru bun, pentruca păcatul să se arate afară din cale de păcătos, prin faptul că se slujea de aceeaş poruncă.

14 ¶ For we now know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold unto subjection by sin.

Ştim, în adevăr, că Legea este duhovnicească: dar eu sînt pămîntesc, vîndut rob păcatului.

15 F or that which I do, I do not understand, and not even the good that I desire is what I do; but what I hate, that is what I do.

Căci nu ştiu ce fac: nu fac ce vreau, ci fac ce urăsc.

16 I f then I do that which I do not desire, I approve that the law is good.

Acum, dacă fac ce nu vreau, mărturisesc prin aceasta că Legea este bună.

17 S o that it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells in me.

Şi atunci, nu mai sînt eu cel ce face lucrul acesta, ci păcatul care locuieşte în mine.

18 A nd I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) dwells no good thing; for I have the desire, but I am not able to perform that which is good.

Ştiu, în adevăr, că nimic bun nu locuieşte în mine, adică în firea mea pămîntească, pentrucă, ce -i drept, am voinţa să fac binele, dar n'am puterea să -l fac.

19 F or I do not do the good that I desire; but the evil which I do not desire, that I do.

Căci binele, pe care vreau să -l fac, nu -l fac, ci răul, pe care nu vreau să -l fac, iacă ce fac!

20 A nd if I do that which I do not desire, I am not working, but sin that dwells in me.

Şi dacă fac ce nu vreau să fac, nu mai sînt eu cel ce face lucrul acesta, ci păcatul care locuieşte în mine.

21 S o that, desiring to do good, I find this law: evil is natural unto me.

Găsesc dar în mine legea aceasta: cînd vreau să fac binele, răul este lipit de mine.

22 F or I delight with the law of God with the inward man,

Fiindcă, după omul din lăuntru îmi place Legea lui Dumnezeu;

23 b ut I see another law in my members which rebels against the law of my mind, bringing captive unto the law of sin which is in my members.

dar văd în mădularele mele o altă lege, care se luptă împotriva legii primite de mintea mea, şi mă ţine rob legii păcatului, care este în mădularele mele.

24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?

O, nenorocitul de mine! Cine mă va izbăvi de acest trup de moarte?..

25 T he grace of God, by Jesus, the Christ, our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin.

Mulţămiri fie aduse lui Dumnezeu, prin Isus Hristos, Domnul nostru!... Astfel dar, cu mintea, eu slujesc legii lui Dumnezeu; dar cu firea pămîntească, slujesc legii păcatului.
