1 ¶ And Samuel spoke unto all Israel. Now at that time Israel went out to meet the Philistines in battle and pitched their camp beside Ebenezer; and the Philistines pitched theirs in Aphek.

Chemarea lui Samuel a ajuns la cunoştinţa întregului Israel. Israel a ieşit înaintea Filistenilor, ca să lupte împotriva lor. Au tăbărît lîngă Eben-Ezer, şi Filistenii tăbărîseră la Afec.

2 A nd the Philistines put themselves in array against Israel; and when they joined battle, Israel was smitten before the Philistines, who slew of the army in the field about four thousand men.

Filistenii s'au aşezat în linie de bătaie împotriva lui Israel, şi lupta a început. Israel a fost bătut de Filisteni, cari au omorît pe cîmpul de bătaie aproape patru mii de oameni.

3 A nd when the people returned into the camp, the elders of Israel said, Why has the LORD smitten us today before the Philistines? Let us bring the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of Shiloh unto us that when it comes among us, it may save us out of the hand of our enemies.

Poporul s'a întors în tabără, şi bătrînii lui Israel au zis:,, Pentruce ne -a lăsat Domnul să fim bătuţi astăzi de Filisteni? Haidem să luăm dela Silo chivotul legămîntului Domnului, ca să vină în mijlocul nostru, şi să ne izbăvească din mîna vrăjmaşilor noştri.

4 S o the people sent to Shiloh, and they brought from there the ark of the covenant of the LORD of the hosts, who dwells between the cherubim; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.

Poporul a trimes la Silo, de unde au adus chivotul legămîntului Domnului oştirilor, care şade între heruvimi. Cei doi fii ai lui Eli, Hofni şi Fineas, erau acolo, împreună cu chivotul legămîntului lui Dumnezeu.

5 A nd when the ark of the covenant of the LORD came into the camp, all Israel shouted with such a great shout that the earth trembled.

Cînd a intrat chivotul legămîntului Domnului în tabără, tot Israelul a scos strigăte de bucurie, de s'a cutremurat pămîntul.

6 A nd when the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, What great shout of joy is this in the camp of the Hebrews? And they understood that the ark of the LORD had come into the camp.

Răsunetul acestor strigăte a fost auzit de Filisteni, şi au zis:, Ce înseamnă strigătele acestea cari răsună în tabăra Evreilor`? Şi au auzit că sosise chivotul Domnului în tabără.

7 A nd the Philistines were afraid, for they said, God has come into the camp. And they said, Woe unto us! For yesterday and day before yesterday it was not so.

Filistenii s'au temut, pentrucă au crezut că Dumnezeu venise în tabără., Vai de noi!` au zis ei,, căci n'a fost aşa ceva pînă acum.

8 W oe unto us! Who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty gods? These are the gods that smote the Egyptians with all the plagues in the wilderness.

Vai de noi! Cine ne va izbăvi din mîna acestor dumnezei puternici? Dumnezeii aceştia au lovit pe Egipteni cu tot felul de urgii în pustie.

9 B e strong and quit yourselves like men, O ye Philistines, that ye not serve the Hebrews as they have served you; quit yourselves like men and fight.

Întăriţi-vă, şi fiţi oameni, Filistenilor, ca nu cumva să fiţi robi Evreilor, cum v'au fost ei robi vouă: fiţi oameni şi luptaţi!``

10 ¶ And the Philistines fought, and Israel was smitten, and they fled each one into his tent, and there was a very great slaughter, for thirty thousand footmen of Israel fell.

Filistenii au început lupta, şi Israel a fost bătut. Fiecare a fugit în cortul lui. Înfrîngerea a fost foarte mare, şi din Israel au căzut treizeci de mii de oameni pedeştri.

11 A nd the ark of God was taken, and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain.

Chivotul lui Dumnezeu a fost luat, şi cei doi fii ai lui Eli, Hofni şi Fineas, au murit.

12 ¶ And running out of the battle, a man of Benjamin came to Shiloh that same day with his clothes rent and with earth upon his head.

Un om din Beniamin a alergat din tabăra de bătaie şi a venit la Silo în aceaş zi cu hainele sfîşiate, şi cu capul acoperit cu ţărînă.

13 A nd when he came, behold Eli sat upon a seat by the wayside watching, for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city and gave the news, all the city cried out.

Cînd a ajuns, Eli, aştepta, stînd pe un scaun lîngă drum, căci inima îi era neliniştită pentru chivotul lui Dumnezeu. La intrarea lui în cetate, omul acesta a dat de veste, şi toată cetatea a strigat.

14 A nd when Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, What is the noise of this tumult? And the man came in hastily and told Eli.

Eli, auzind aceste strigăte, a zis:,, Ce însemnează zarva aceasta?`` Şi îndată omul a venit şi a adus lui Eli vestea aceasta.

15 N ow Eli was ninety-eight years old, and his eyes had become dim so that he could not see.

Şi Eli era în vîrstă de nouăzeci şi opt de ani, avea ochii întunecaţi şi nu mai putea să vadă.

16 A nd the man said unto Eli, I come from the battle; I fled today out of the army. And he said unto him, What has happened, my son?

Omul a zis lui Eli:,, Vin de pe cîmpul de bătaie, şi din cîmpul de bătaie am fugit astăzi``. Eli a zis:,, Ce s'a întîmplat, fiule?``

17 A nd the messenger answered and said, Israel fled before the Philistines, and there has been also a great slaughter among the people, and thy two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God was taken.

Cel ce aducea vestea aceasta, ca răspuns, a zis:,, Israel a fugit dinaintea Filistenilor, şi poporul a suferit o mare înfrîngere; şi chiar cei doi fii ai tăi, Hofni şi Fineas, au murit, şi chivotul Domnului a fost luat.``

18 A nd it came to pass when he made mention of the ark of God, Eli fell from off the seat backward by the side of the gate, and his neck broke, and he died; for he was an old man and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.

Abea a pomenit de chivotul lui Dumnezeu, şi Eli a căzut de pe scaun pe spate, lîngă poartă; şi -a rupt ceafa şi a murit, căci era om bătrîn şi greu. El fusese judecător în Israel patruzeci de ani.

19 ¶ And his daughter-in-law, Phinehas’s wife, was with child, near to be delivered, and when she heard the tidings that the ark of God was taken and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and travailed, for her pains had come upon her.

Noru-sa, nevasta lui Fineas, era însărcinată, şi sta să nască. Cînd a auzit vestea despre luarea chivotului lui Dumnezeu, despre moartea socrului ei şi despre moartea bărbatului ei, s'a înconvoiat şi a născut, căci au apucat -o durerile naşterii.

20 A nd about the time of her death the women that stood by her said unto her, Fear not, for thou hast given birth to a son. But she did not answer, neither did she regard it.

Cînd trăgea să moară, femeile cari erau lîngă ea i-au zis:,, Nu te teme, căci ai născut un fiu!`` Dar ea n'a răspuns şi n'a luat seama la ce i se spunea.

21 A nd she named the child Ichabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel! (Because the ark of God was taken and because of her father-in-law and her husband.)

A pus copilului numele I-Cabod! (Nu mai e slavă), zicînd:,, S'a dus slava din Israel!`` Spunea lucrul acesta din pricina luării chivotului lui Dumnezeu, şi din pricina socrului şi bărbatului ei.

22 T herefore, she said, The glory is departed from Israel, for the ark of God is taken.

Ea a zis:,, S'a dus slava din Israel, căci chivotul lui Dumnezeu este luat.``
