Surely there is a vein for the silver, and a place for gold which they refine;

2 E l hierro se saca del polvo y de la piedra se funde el cobre.

Iron is taken out of the dust, and copper is molten out of the stone.

3 L os hombres ponen término a las tinieblas, lo examinan todo perfectamente, hasta las piedras que hay en oscuridad y en sombra de muerte.

putteth an end to the darkness, and exploreth to the utmost limit, the stones of darkness and of the shadow of death.

4 A bren minas lejos de lo habitado, en lugares olvidados donde nadie pone el pie. Allí están suspendidos, balanceándose lejos de los demás hombres.

He openeth a shaft far from the inhabitants: forgotten of the foot, they hang suspended; away below men they hover.

5 D e la tierra proviene el pan, pero en su interior está como convertida en fuego,

As for the earth, out of it cometh bread, and underneath it is turned up as by fire;

6 y en ella hay lugar donde las piedras son zafiro y el polvo es de oro.

The stones of it are the place of sapphires, and it hath dust of gold.

7 E s una senda que nunca la conoció ave ni ojo de buitre la vio;

It is a path no bird of prey knoweth, and the vulture's eye hath not seen it;

8 q ue nunca la pisaron animales fieros ni león pasó por ella.

The proud beasts have not trodden it, nor the fierce lion passed over it.

9 E l hombre pone su mano en el pedernal y trastorna de raíz los montes.

putteth forth his hand upon the flinty rock, he overturneth the mountains by the root.

10 E n los peñascos abre corrientes de aguas, y sus ojos ven todo lo preciado.

He cutteth out channels in the rocks, and his eye seeth every precious thing.

11 D etiene los ríos en su nacimiento y saca a la luz lo escondido.

He bindeth the streams that they drip not, and what is hidden he bringeth forth to light.

12 » Mas, ¿dónde se halla la sabiduría? ¿Dónde se encuentra el lugar de la inteligencia?

But wisdom, where shall it be found? and where is the place of understanding?

13 N o conoce su valor el hombre, ni se halla en la tierra de los seres vivientes.

Man knoweth not the value thereof; and it is not found in the land of the living.

14 E l abismo dice: “No está en mí”, y dice el mar: “Tampoco está conmigo.”

The deep saith, It is not in me; and the sea saith, It is not with me.

15 N o se dará a cambio de oro ni su precio será a peso de plata.

Choice gold cannot be given for it, nor silver be weighed for its price.

16 N o puede ser pagada con oro de Ofir, con ónice precioso ni con zafiro.

It is not set in the balance with gold of Ophir, with the precious onyx, and the sapphire.

17 N o se le pueden comparar el oro ni el diamante, ni se la cambiará por alhajas de oro fino.

Gold and glass cannot be compared to it, nor vessels of fine gold be its exchange.

18 ¿ Y qué decir del coral o de las perlas? ¡La sabiduría vale más que las piedras preciosas!

Corals and crystal are no more remembered; yea, the acquisition of wisdom is above rubies.

19 N o se iguala con ella el topacio de Etiopía, ni puede pagarse con oro fino.

The topaz of Ethiopia shall not be compared to it, neither shall it be set in the balance with pure gold.

20 » ¿De dónde, pues, procede la sabiduría y dónde se encuentra el lugar de la inteligencia?

Whence then cometh wisdom? and where is the place of understanding?

21 ¡ Encubierta está a los ojos de todo viviente, y a toda ave del cielo le es oculta!

For it is hidden from the eyes of all living, and concealed from the fowl of the heavens.

22 E l Abadón y la muerte dicen: “Su fama ha llegado hasta nuestros oídos.”

Destruction and death say, We have heard its report with our ears.

23 » Dios es quien conoce el camino de ella y sabe dónde está su lugar,

God understandeth the way thereof, and he knoweth its place:

24 p orque él observa hasta los confines de la tierra y ve cuanto hay bajo los cielos.

For he looketh to the ends of the earth, he seeth under the whole heaven.

25 A l darle peso al viento y fijar la medida de las aguas;

In making a weight for the wind, and meting out the waters by measure,

26 a l darle ley a la lluvia y camino al relámpago de los truenos,

In appointing a statute for the rain, and a way for the thunder's flash:

27 y a entonces la vio él y la puso de manifiesto, la preparó y también la escudriñó.

Then did he see it, and declare it; he established it, yea, and searched it out;

28 Y dijo al hombre: “El temor del Señor es la sabiduría, y el apartarse del mal, la inteligencia.”»

And unto man he said, Lo, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.
