1 C uando los enemigos de Judá y de Benjamín oyeron que los que habían vuelto de la cautividad edificaban un templo a Jehová, Dios de Israel,

And the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity were building the temple to Jehovah the God of Israel;

2 f ueron a ver a Zorobabel y a los jefes de familia, y les dijeron: —Edificaremos con vosotros, porque, como vosotros, buscamos a vuestro Dios, y a él ofrecemos sacrificios desde los días de Esar-hadón, rey de Asiria, que nos hizo venir aquí.

and they came to Zerubbabel and to the chief fathers, and said to them, We would build with you; for we seek your God, as ye; and we have sacrificed to him since the days of Esar-haddon king of Assyria, who brought us up hither.

3 Z orobabel, Jesúa y los demás jefes de casas paternas de Israel dijeron: —No nos conviene edificar con vosotros la casa de nuestro Dios, sino que nosotros solos la edificaremos a Jehová, Dios de Israel, como nos mandó Ciro, rey de Persia.

But Zerubbabel and Jeshua and the rest of the chief fathers of Israel said to them, Ye have nothing to do with us to build a house to our God, but we alone will build to Jehovah the God of Israel, as king Cyrus, the king of Persia, has commanded us.

4 E ntonces la gente del país intimidó al pueblo de Judá y lo atemorizó para que no siguiera edificando.

And the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building;

5 S obornaron además contra ellos a algunos consejeros para frustrar sus propósitos, durante todo el tiempo que Ciro fue rey de Persia y hasta el reinado de Darío, rey de Persia.

and they hired counsellors against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.

6 E n el reinado de Asuero, al principio de su reinado, escribieron acusaciones contra los habitantes de Judá y de Jerusalén.

And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, they wrote an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.

7 T ambién en días de Artajerjes escribieron Bislam, Mitrídates, Tabeel y los demás compañeros suyos, a Artajerjes, rey de Persia; y la carta estaba escrita en arameo, y traducida.

And in the days of Artaxerxes, Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of his companions, wrote to Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the writing of the letter was written in Aramaic, and interpreted in Aramaic.

8 E l canciller Rehum y el secretario Simsai escribieron una carta contra Jerusalén al rey Artajerjes.

Rehum the chancellor and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king after this sort:

9 E n esa fecha escribieron el canciller Rehum y el secretario Simsai, y los demás compañeros suyos, los jueces, gobernadores y oficiales, los de Persia, Erec, Babilonia y Susa, es decir, los elamitas,

Rehum the chancellor, and Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their companions, the Dinaites, and the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the Apharsites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Shushanchites, the Dehaites, the Elamites,

10 y los demás pueblos que el grande y glorioso Asnapar deportó e hizo habitar en las ciudades de Samaria y las demás provincias del otro lado del río.

and the rest of the peoples whom the great and noble Osnappar brought over and settled in the cities of Samaria, and the rest on this side the river, and so forth.

11 É sta es la copia de la carta que enviaron: «Al rey Artajerjes: Tus siervos del otro lado del río te saludan.

This is the copy of the letter that they sent to him: To Artaxerxes the king: Thy servants the men on this side the river, and so forth.

12 » Ha de saber el rey que los judíos que de parte tuya vinieron a nosotros, llegaron a Jerusalén y edifican esta ciudad rebelde y mala. Ya levantan los muros y reparan los fundamentos.

Be it known to the king that the Jews who came up from thee unto us have come to Jerusalem; they are building the rebellious and the bad city, and they complete the walls and join up the foundations.

13 S epa, pues, el rey, que si aquella ciudad es reedificada y los muros son levantados, no pagarán tributo, impuesto y rentas, y el erario de los reyes será perjudicado.

Be it known therefore unto the king, that, if this city be built and the walls be completed, they will not pay tribute, tax, and toll, and in the end it will bring damage to the kings.

14 C omo nos mantienen desde el palacio, no podemos permitir que el rey sea menospreciado, por lo cual hemos enviado al rey esta denuncia,

Now, since we eat the salt of the palace, and it is not right for us to see the king's injury, therefore have we sent and informed the king;

15 a fin de que se investigue en el libro de las memorias de tus padres. En el libro de las memorias encontrarás y sabrás que esta ciudad es ciudad rebelde, perjudicial a los reyes y a las provincias, y que de tiempo antiguo en ella se han fomentado rebeliones. Por ese motivo esta ciudad fue destruida.

that search may be made in the book of the annals of thy fathers: so shalt thou find in the book of the annals and know that this city is a rebellious city, which has done damage to kings and provinces, and that they have raised sedition within the same of old time, for which cause this city was destroyed.

16 H acemos saber al rey que si se reedifica esta ciudad y se levantan sus muros, la región de más allá del río no será tuya.»

We inform the king that if this city be built and its walls be completed, by this means thou shalt have no portion on this side the river.

17 E l rey envió esta respuesta: «Al canciller Rehum, al secretario Simsai, a los compañeros suyos que habitan en Samaria, y a los demás del otro lado del río: Salud y paz.

The king sent an answer to Rehum the chancellor, and Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their companions that dwell in Samaria, and the other places beyond the river: Peace, and so forth.

18 » La carta que nos enviasteis fue leída claramente delante de mí.

The letter that ye sent to us has been read before me distinctly.

19 O rdené que se investigara, y se ha encontrado que aquella ciudad se subleva desde antiguo contra los reyes, y que en ella se han fomentado revueltas e insurrecciones.

And I gave orders, and search has been made, and it has been found that this city of old time has made insurrection against the kings, and that rebellion and sedition have been raised therein.

20 Q ue hubo en Jerusalén reyes fuertes, cuyo dominio se extendía a todo lo que hay más allá del río, y que se les pagaba tributo, impuestos y rentas.

And there have been mighty kings over Jerusalem, who have ruled over all beyond the river; and tribute, tax, and toll were paid to them.

21 A hora, pues, ordenad que se detengan aquellos hombres, y no sea esa ciudad reedificada hasta nueva orden enviada por mí.

Now give order to make these men to cease, and that this city be not built, until the order shall be given from me;

22 P rocurad no ser negligentes en esto; ¿por qué habrá de crecer el daño en perjuicio de los reyes?»

and take heed that ye fail not to do this: why should harm grow to the damage of the kings?

23 C uando la copia de la carta del rey Artajerjes fue leída delante de Rehum, de Simsai, el secretario, y de sus compañeros, salieron apresuradamente hacia Jerusalén, donde estaban los judíos, y les hicieron cesar los trabajos utilizando la fuerza y la violencia.

As soon as the copy of king Artaxerxes' letter was read before Rehum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went up in haste to Jerusalem to the Jews, and made them cease by force and power.

24 A sí se detuvo la obra de la casa de Dios que estaba en Jerusalén, la cual quedó suspendida hasta el segundo año del reinado de Darío, rey de Persia.

Then ceased the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem; and it ceased until the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.
