My son, if thou hast become surety for thy friend, if thou hast stricken thy hand for a stranger,

2 t e has enredado con las palabras de tu boca y has quedado atrapado en los dichos de tus labios.

thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth.

3 H az esto ahora, hijo mío, para librarte, ya que has caído en manos de tu prójimo: Ve, humíllate, importuna a tu amigo,

Do this now, my son, and deliver thyself, since thou hast come into the hand of thy friend: go, humble thyself, and be urgent with thy friend.

4 n o des sueño a tus ojos ni dejes que tus párpados se cierren;

Give not sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber to thine eyelids:

5 e scápate como una gacela de manos del cazador, como un ave, de manos del que tiende trampas.

deliver thyself as a gazelle from the hand, and as a bird from the hand of the fowler.

6 » Mira la hormiga, perezoso, observa sus caminos y sé sabio:

Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways and be wise:

7 E lla, sin tener capitán, gobernador ni señor,

which having no chief, overseer, or ruler,

8 p repara en el verano su comida, recoge en el tiempo de la siega su sustento.

provideth her bread in the summer, gathereth her food in the harvest.

9 P erezoso, ¿hasta cuándo has de dormir? ¿Cuándo te levantarás del sueño?

How long, sluggard, wilt thou lie down? When wilt thou arise out of thy sleep?

10 U n poco de sueño, dormitar otro poco, y otro poco descansar mano sobre mano:

A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest!

11 a sí te llegará la miseria como un vagabundo, la pobreza como un hombre armado.

So shall thy poverty come as a roving plunderer, and thy penury as an armed man.

12 » El hombre malo, el hombre depravado, es el que anda en perversidad de boca;

A man of Belial, a wicked person, is he that goeth about with a perverse mouth;

13 q ue guiña los ojos, que habla con los pies, que hace señas con los dedos.

he winketh with his eyes, he speaketh with his feet, he teacheth with his fingers;

14 P erversidades hay en su corazón; anda pensando el mal en todo tiempo; siembra las discordias.

deceits are in his heart; he deviseth mischief at all times, he soweth discords.

15 P or tanto, su calamidad vendrá de repente; súbitamente será quebrantado, y no habrá remedio.

Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly: in a moment shall he be broken, and without remedy.

16 » Seis cosas aborrece Jehová, y aun siete le son abominables:

These six doth Jehovah hate, yea, seven are an abomination unto him:

17 l os ojos altivos, la lengua mentirosa, las manos que derraman sangre inocente,

haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood;

18 e l corazón que maquina pensamientos inicuos, los pies que corren presurosos al mal,

a heart that deviseth wicked imaginations; feet that are swift in running to mischief;

19 e l testigo falso, que dice mentiras, y el que siembra discordia entre hermanos. Amonestación contra el adulterio

a false witness that uttereth lies, and he that soweth discords among brethren.

20 » Guarda, hijo mío, el mandamiento de tu padre y no abandones la enseñanza de tu madre.

My son, observe thy father's commandment, and forsake not the teaching of thy mother;

21 Á talos siempre a tu corazón, enlázalos a tu cuello.

bind them continually upon thy heart, tie them about thy neck:

22 T e guiarán cuando camines, te guardarán cuando duermas y hablarán contigo cuando despiertes.

when thou walkest, it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest, it shall keep thee; and thou awakest, it shall talk with thee.

23 P orque el mandamiento es lámpara, la enseñanza es luz, y camino de vida son las reprensiones que te instruyen

For the commandment is a lamp, and the teaching a light, and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:

24 p ara guardarte de la mala mujer, de la suave lengua de la mujer extraña.

to keep thee from the evil woman, from the flattery of the tongue of a strange woman.

25 N o codicies su hermosura en tu corazón, ni te prenda ella con sus ojos,

Lust not after her beauty in thy heart, neither let her take thee with her eyelids;

26 p orque la ramera pretende del hombre sólo un bocado de pan, pero la adúltera busca la vida del hombre.

for by means of a whorish woman to a loaf of bread, and another's wife doth hunt for the precious soul.

27 ¿ Pondrá el hombre fuego en su seno sin que ardan sus vestidos?

Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his garments not be burned?

28 ¿ Andará el hombre sobre brasas sin que se quemen sus pies?

Can one go upon hot coals, and his feet not be scorched?

29 A sí le sucede al que se llega a la mujer de su prójimo, pues no quedará impune ninguno que la toque.

So he that goeth in to his neighbour's wife: whosoever toucheth her shall not be innocent.

30 ¿ No se desprecia al ladrón, aunque sólo robe por comer cuando tiene hambre?

They do not despise a thief, if he steal to satisfy his soul when he is hungry:

31 Y si es sorprendido, pagará siete veces: tendrá que entregar cuanto tiene en su casa.

and if he be found, he shall restore sevenfold; he shall give all the substance of his house.

32 T ambién al que comete adulterio le falta sensatez; el que tal hace corrompe su alma.

Whoso committeth adultery with a woman is void of understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul.

33 H eridas y vergüenza hallará, y su afrenta nunca será borrada.

A wound and contempt shall he get; and his reproach shall not be wiped away.

34 P orque el hombre enfurecido por los celos no perdonará en el día de la venganza;

For jealousy is the rage of a man, and he will not spare in the day of vengeance;

35 n o aceptará compensación alguna, ni querrá perdonar aunque le aumentes el pago.

he will not regard any ransom, neither will he rest content though thou multipliest gifts.
