1 O yeron Sefatías hijo de Matán, Gedalías hijo de Pasur, Jucal hijo de Selemías y Pasur hijo de Malquías, las palabras que Jeremías hablaba a todo el pueblo, diciendo:

And Shephatiah the son of Mattan, and Gedaliah the son of Pashur, and Jucal the son of Shelemiah, and Pashur the son of Malchijah, heard the words that Jeremiah had spoken unto all the people, saying,

2 « Así ha dicho Jehová: El que se quede en esta ciudad morirá a espada, de hambre o de peste; pero el que se pase a los caldeos, vivirá. Su vida le será por botín, y vivirá.

Thus saith Jehovah: He that remaineth in this city shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence; but he that goeth forth to the Chaldeans shall live; and he shall have his life for a prey, and shall live.

3 A sí ha dicho Jehová: De cierto será entregada esta ciudad en manos del ejército del rey de Babilonia, y la tomará.»

Thus saith Jehovah: This city shall certainly be given into the hand of the king of Babylon's army, and he shall take it.

4 Y dijeron los jefes al rey: «Muera ahora este hombre; porque de esta manera hace desmayar las manos de los hombres de guerra que han quedado en esta ciudad, y las manos de todo el pueblo, hablándoles tales palabras; porque este hombre no busca la paz de este pueblo, sino el mal.»

And the princes said unto the king, Let this man, we pray thee, be put to death; for why should he weaken the hands of the men of war that remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, in speaking to them according to these words? for this man seeketh not the welfare of this people, but the hurt.

5 D ijo el rey Sedequías: «Él está en vuestras manos, pues el rey nada puede hacer contra vosotros.»

And king Zedekiah said, Behold, he is in your hand; for the king is not he that can do a thing against you.

6 E ntonces tomaron ellos a Jeremías y lo hicieron meter en la cisterna de Malquías hijo de Hamelec, que estaba en el patio de la cárcel. Bajaron a Jeremías con sogas a la cisterna, en la que no había agua, sino barro; y se hundió Jeremías en el barro.

Then they took Jeremiah, and cast him into the dungeon of Malchijah the son of Hammelech, which was in the court of the guard, and they let down Jeremiah with cords. And in the dungeon there was no water, but mire; and Jeremiah sank in the mire.

7 O yó Ebed-melec, un etíope, eunuco de la casa real, que habían puesto a Jeremías en la cisterna; y estando sentado el rey a la puerta de Benjamín,

And Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, a eunuch who was in the king's house, heard that they had put Jeremiah in the dungeon—now the king was sitting in the gate of Benjamin,

8 E bed-melec salió de la casa del rey y habló al rey, diciendo:

—and Ebed-melech went forth out of the king's house, and spoke to the king, saying,

9 « Mi señor, el rey, mal hicieron estos hombres en todo lo que han hecho con el profeta Jeremías, al cual hicieron meter en la cisterna; porque allí morirá de hambre, pues no hay más pan en la ciudad.»

My lord, O king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to the prophet Jeremiah, whom they have cast into the dungeon; and he will die by reason of the famine in the place where he is; for there is no more bread in the city.

10 E ntonces mandó el rey al mismo etíope Ebed-melec, diciendo: «Toma contigo treinta hombres de aquí y haz sacar al profeta Jeremías de la cisterna, antes que muera.»

And the king commanded Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, saying, Take from hence thirty men with thee, and take up Jeremiah the prophet out of the dungeon, before he die.

11 T omó, pues, Ebed-melec consigo a los hombres y entró en la casa del rey, debajo de la tesorería; tomó de allí trapos viejos, raídos y andrajosos, y con unas sogas los echó a Jeremías en la cisterna.

And Ebed-melech took the men under his order, and went into the house of the king under the treasury, and took thence old shreds and worn-out clothes, and let them down by cords into the dungeon to Jeremiah.

12 Y dijo el etíope Ebed-melec a Jeremías: «Ponte ahora esos trapos viejos, raídos y andrajosos bajo los sobacos, por debajo de las sogas.» Y lo hizo así Jeremías.

And Ebed-melech the Ethiopian said to Jeremiah, Put, I pray, old shreds and rags under thine armholes under the cords. And Jeremiah did so.

13 D e este modo sacaron con sogas a Jeremías y lo subieron de la cisterna. Y quedó Jeremías en el patio de la cárcel. Sedequías consulta secretamente a Jeremías

And they drew up Jeremiah with cords, and brought him up out of the dungeon; and Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard.

14 D espués el rey Sedequías mandó traer al profeta Jeremías a su presencia, en la tercera entrada de la casa de Jehová. Y dijo el rey a Jeremías: —Te haré una pregunta; no me ocultes ninguna cosa.

And king Zedekiah sent and took the prophet Jeremiah unto him, into the third entry that is in the house of Jehovah; and the king said unto Jeremiah, I will ask thee a thing: hide nothing from me.

15 J eremías dijo a Sedequías: —Si te lo declaro, ¿no es cierto que me matarás? Y si te doy consejo, no me escucharás.

And Jeremiah said unto Zedekiah, If I declare unto thee, wilt thou not certainly put me to death? and if I give thee counsel, thou wilt not hearken unto me.

16 J uró el rey Sedequías en secreto a Jeremías, diciendo: —¡Vive Jehová que nos hizo esta alma, que no te mataré ni te entregaré en manos de esos hombres que buscan tu vida!

And king Zedekiah swore secretly unto Jeremiah, saying, Jehovah liveth, that made us this soul, I will not put thee to death, neither will I give thee into the hand of these men that seek thy life.

17 E ntonces dijo Jeremías a Sedequías: —Así ha dicho Jehová, Dios de los ejércitos, Dios de Israel: “Si te entregas en seguida a los jefes del rey de Babilonia, tu alma vivirá y esta ciudad no será incendiada; vivirás tú y tu casa.

And Jeremiah said unto Zedekiah, Thus saith Jehovah the God of hosts, the God of Israel: If thou wilt freely go forth to the king of Babylon's princes, then thy soul shall live, and this city shall not be burned with fire; and thou shalt live, and thy house.

18 P ero si no te entregas a los jefes del rey de Babilonia, esta ciudad será entregada en manos de los caldeos; ellos la incendiarán, y tú no escaparás de sus manos.”

But if thou wilt not go forth to the king of Babylon's princes, then shall this city be given into the hand of the Chaldeans, and they shall burn it with fire, and thou shalt not escape out of their hand.

19 Y dijo el rey Sedequías a Jeremías: —Tengo temor de que los judíos que se han pasado a los caldeos me entreguen en sus manos y hagan burla de mí.

And king Zedekiah said unto Jeremiah, I am afraid of the Jews that have deserted to the Chaldeans, lest they give me over into their hand, and they mock me.

20 D ijo Jeremías: —No te entregarán. Oye ahora la voz de Jehová que yo te hablo, y te irá bien y vivirás.

And Jeremiah said, They shall not give over. Hearken, I beseech thee, unto the voice of Jehovah, in that which I speak unto thee; so shall it be well unto thee, and thy soul shall live.

21 P ero si no quieres entregarte, ésta es la palabra que me ha mostrado Jehová:

But if thou refuse to go forth, this is the word which Jehovah hath shewn me:

22 T odas las mujeres que han quedado en casa del rey de Judá serán entregadas a los jefes del rey de Babilonia, y ellas mismas dirán: »“Te han engañado, y han prevalecido contra ti tus amigos; hundieron en el barro tus pies, se volvieron atrás.”

Behold, all the women that are left in the king of Judah's house shall be brought forth to the king of Babylon's princes; and they shall say, Thy familiar friends have set thee on, and have prevailed over thee; thy feet are sunk in the mire, they are turned away back.

23 » Entregarán, pues, todas tus mujeres y tus hijos a los caldeos, y tú no escaparás de sus manos, sino que serás entregado al poder del rey de Babilonia, el cual prenderá fuego a esta ciudad.

And they shall bring out all thy wives and thy children to the Chaldeans, and thou shalt not escape out of their hand; for thou shalt be taken by the hand of the king of Babylon, and thou shalt cause this city to be burned with fire.

24 D ijo Sedequías a Jeremías: —Nadie sepa estas palabras, y no morirás.

And Zedekiah said unto Jeremiah, Let no man know of these words, and thou shalt not die.

25 Y si los jefes oyen que yo he hablado contigo, y vienen a ti a decirte: “Decláranos ahora qué hablaste con el rey; no nos lo ocultes, y no te mataremos; y dinos también qué te dijo el rey”,

And if the princes hear that I have talked with thee, and they come unto thee, and say unto thee, Declare unto us now what thou hast said unto the king, hide it not from us, and we will not put thee to death; and what hath the king said unto thee?

26 l es dirás: “Supliqué al rey que no me hiciera volver a casa de Jonatán, para que no me muriera allí.”

then thou shalt say unto them, I presented my supplication before the king, that he would not cause me to return to Jonathan's house, to die there.

27 V inieron luego, en efecto, todos los jefes a Jeremías y lo interrogaron. Él les respondió conforme a todo lo que el rey le había mandado. Con esto se alejaron de él, porque el asunto había sido oído.

—And all the princes came to Jeremiah, and asked him; and he told them according to all these words that the king had commanded. And they withdrew quietly from him; for the matter was not reported.

28 Y quedó Jeremías en el patio de la cárcel hasta el día que fue tomada Jerusalén. Allí estaba cuando Jerusalén fue tomada.

And Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard until the day that Jerusalem was taken.
