1 A conteció que cuando Samuel envejeció puso a sus hijos por jueces sobre Israel.

And it came to pass when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel.

2 S u hijo primogénito se llamaba Joel, y el segundo, Abías; ambos eran jueces en Beerseba.

And the name of his firstborn was Joel; and the name of his second, Abijah; they judged in Beer-sheba.

3 P ero no anduvieron los hijos por los caminos de su padre, sino que se dejaron llevar por la avaricia, dejándose sobornar y pervirtiendo el derecho.

And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted justice.

4 E ntonces todos los ancianos de Israel se reunieron y vinieron a Ramá para ver a Samuel,

Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel to Ramah,

5 y le dijeron: «Tú has envejecido y tus hijos no andan en tus caminos; por tanto, danos ahora un rey que nos juzgue, como tienen todas las naciones.»

and said to him, Behold, thou art become old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now appoint us a king to judge us, like all the nations.

6 P ero no agradó a Samuel que le dijeran: «Danos un rey que nos juzgue», y oró a Jehová.

And the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed to Jehovah.

7 D ijo Jehová a Samuel: «Oye la voz del pueblo en todo lo que ellos digan; porque no te han desechado a ti, sino a mí me han desechado, para que no reine sobre ellos.

And Jehovah said to Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.

8 C onforme a todas las obras que han hecho desde el día que los saqué de Egipto hasta hoy, dejándome a mí y sirviendo a dioses ajenos, así hacen también contigo.

According to all the deeds that they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day, in that they have forsaken me and served other gods, so do they also unto thee.

9 A hora, pues, oye su voz; pero hazles una advertencia solemne y muéstrales cómo los tratará el rey que reinará sobre ellos.»

And now hearken unto their voice; only, testify solemnly unto them, and declare unto them the manner of the king that shall reign over them.

10 S amuel repitió todas las palabras de Jehová al pueblo que le había pedido rey.

And Samuel spoke all the words of Jehovah to the people that asked of him a king.

11 D ijo, pues: —Así hará el rey que reine sobre vosotros: tomará vuestros hijos y los destinará a sus carros y a su gente de a caballo, para que corran delante de su carro.

And he said, This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: he will take your sons, and appoint them for himself, on his chariot and among his horsemen, and they shall run before his chariots;

12 L os empleará como jefes de millar y jefes de cincuentenas; los pondrá a que aren sus campos y sieguen sus mieses, y a que fabriquen sus armas de guerra y los pertrechos de sus carros.

and that he may appoint for himself captains over thousands, and captains over fifties, and that they may plough his ground, and reap his harvest, and make his instruments of war and instruments of his chariots.

13 T omará también a vuestras hijas para perfumistas, cocineras y amasadoras.

And he will take your daughters for perfumers, and cooks, and bakers.

14 A simismo tomará lo mejor de vuestras tierras, de vuestras viñas y de vuestros olivares, para dárselo a sus siervos.

And your fields, and your vineyards, and your oliveyards, the best, will he take and give to his servants.

15 D iezmará vuestro grano y vuestras viñas, para dárselo a sus oficiales y a sus siervos.

And he will take the tenth of your seed and of your vineyards, and give to his chamberlains and to his servants.

16 T omará vuestros siervos y vuestras siervas, vuestros mejores jóvenes y vuestros asnos, para emplearlos en sus obras.

And he will take your bondmen, and your bondwomen, and your comeliest young men, and your asses, and use them for his work.

17 D iezmará también vuestros rebaños y seréis sus siervos.

He will take the tenth of your sheep. And ye shall be his servants.

18 A quel día os lamentaréis a causa del rey que habréis elegido, pero entonces Jehová no os responderá.

And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king whom ye have chosen; and Jehovah will not answer you in that day.

19 P ero el pueblo no quiso oír la voz de Samuel, y dijo: —No. Habrá un rey sobre nosotros,

And the people refused to hearken to the voice of Samuel; and they said, No, but there shall be a king over us,

20 y seremos también como todas las naciones. Nuestro rey nos gobernará, saldrá delante de nosotros y hará nuestras guerras.

that we also may be like all the nations; and our king shall judge us, and go out before us, and conduct our wars.

21 O yó Samuel todas las palabras del pueblo y las repitió a oídos de Jehová.

And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he repeated them in the ears of Jehovah.

22 P ero Jehová dijo a Samuel: —Oye su voz y dales un rey. Entonces dijo Samuel a los varones de Israel: —Volveos cada uno a vuestra ciudad.

And Jehovah said to Samuel, Hearken unto their voice, and make them a king. And Samuel said to the men of Israel, Go ye every man to his city.
