1 Y oyendo los enemigos de Judá y de Benjamín, que los hijos de la cautividad edificaban el templo del SEÑOR Dios de Israel,

And the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity were building the temple to Jehovah the God of Israel;

2 v inieron a Zorobabel, y a las cabezas de los padres, y les dijeron: Edificaremos con vosotros, porque como vosotros buscaremos a vuestro Dios, y a él sacrificamos desde los días de Esar-hadón rey de Asiria, que nos hizo subir aquí.

and they came to Zerubbabel and to the chief fathers, and said to them, We would build with you; for we seek your God, as ye; and we have sacrificed to him since the days of Esar-haddon king of Assyria, who brought us up hither.

3 Y les dijo Zorobabel, y Jesúa, y los demás cabezas de los padres de Israel: No nos conviene edificar con vosotros Casa a nuestro Dios, sino que nosotros solos la edificaremos al SEÑOR Dios de Israel, como nos mandó el rey Ciro, rey de Persia.

But Zerubbabel and Jeshua and the rest of the chief fathers of Israel said to them, Ye have nothing to do with us to build a house to our God, but we alone will build to Jehovah the God of Israel, as king Cyrus, the king of Persia, has commanded us.

4 M as el pueblo de la tierra debilitaba las manos del pueblo de Judá, y los perturbaban de edificar.

And the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building;

5 C ontrataron además contra ellos consejeros para disipar su consejo, todo el tiempo de Ciro rey de Persia, y hasta el reinado de Darío rey de Persia.

and they hired counsellors against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.

6 Y en el reinado de Asuero, en el principio de su reinado, escribieron acusaciones contra los moradores de Judá y de Jerusalén.

And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, they wrote an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.

7 Y en días de Artajerjes escribieron Bislam, Mitrídates, Tabeel, y los demás compañeros suyos, a Artajerjes rey de Persia; y la escritura de la carta estaba hecha en siriaco, y declarada en siriaco.

And in the days of Artaxerxes, Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of his companions, wrote to Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the writing of the letter was written in Aramaic, and interpreted in Aramaic.

8 R ehum canciller, y Simsai escriba, escribieron una carta contra Jerusalén al rey Artajerjes, como se sigue.

Rehum the chancellor and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king after this sort:

9 E ntonces Rehum canciller, y Simsai escriba, y los demás compañeros suyos, los dineos, afarsataceos, tefarleos, afarseos, ercueos, babilonios, susasceos, dieveos, y los elamitas;

Rehum the chancellor, and Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their companions, the Dinaites, and the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the Apharsites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Shushanchites, the Dehaites, the Elamites,

10 y los demás pueblos que el grande y glorioso Asnapar (Senaquerib) transportó, e hizo habitar en las ciudades de Samaria, y los demás del otro lado del río, y de Cheenet.

and the rest of the peoples whom the great and noble Osnappar brought over and settled in the cities of Samaria, and the rest on this side the river, and so forth.

11 E ste es el traslado de la carta que enviaron: Al rey Artajerjes: Tus siervos del otro lado del río, y de Cheenet.

This is the copy of the letter that they sent to him: To Artaxerxes the king: Thy servants the men on this side the river, and so forth.

12 S ea notorio al rey, que los judíos que subieron de ti a nosotros, vinieron a Jerusalén; y edifican la ciudad rebelde y mala, y han fundado los muros; y puesto los fundamentos.

Be it known to the king that the Jews who came up from thee unto us have come to Jerusalem; they are building the rebellious and the bad city, and they complete the walls and join up the foundations.

13 A hora, notorio sea al rey, que si aquella ciudad fuere reedificada, y los muros fueren fundados, no darán el tributo, impuesto, y rentas, y el catastro de los reyes será menoscabado.

Be it known therefore unto the king, that, if this city be built and the walls be completed, they will not pay tribute, tax, and toll, and in the end it will bring damage to the kings.

14 A hora porque de la sal del palacio estamos salados, no nos es justo ver el menosprecio del rey; por tanto hemos enviado para hacerlo saber al rey,

Now, since we eat the salt of the palace, and it is not right for us to see the king's injury, therefore have we sent and informed the king;

15 p ara que busque en el libro de las historias de nuestros padres; y hallarás en el libro de las historias, y sabrás que esta ciudad es ciudad rebelde, y perjudicial a los reyes y a las provincias, y que de tiempo antiguo forman en medio de ella rebeliones; por lo que esta ciudad fue destruida.

that search may be made in the book of the annals of thy fathers: so shalt thou find in the book of the annals and know that this city is a rebellious city, which has done damage to kings and provinces, and that they have raised sedition within the same of old time, for which cause this city was destroyed.

16 H acemos saber al rey, que si esta ciudad fuere edificada, y los muros fundados, la parte más allá del río no será tuya.

We inform the king that if this city be built and its walls be completed, by this means thou shalt have no portion on this side the river.

17 E l rey envió esta respuesta a Rehum canciller, y a Simsai escriba, y a los demás de sus compañeros que habitan en Samaria, y a los demás del otro lado del río y a Cheenet:

The king sent an answer to Rehum the chancellor, and Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their companions that dwell in Samaria, and the other places beyond the river: Peace, and so forth.

18 L a carta que nos enviasteis claramente fue leída delante de mí.

The letter that ye sent to us has been read before me distinctly.

19 Y por mí fue dado mandamiento, y buscaron; y hallaron que aquella ciudad de tiempo antiguo se levanta contra los reyes, y se rebela, y se forma en ella sedición;

And I gave orders, and search has been made, and it has been found that this city of old time has made insurrection against the kings, and that rebellion and sedition have been raised therein.

20 y que reyes fuertes hubo en Jerusalén, y señores de todo lo que está al lado de allá del río; y que tributo, e impuesto, y rentas se les daba.

And there have been mighty kings over Jerusalem, who have ruled over all beyond the river; and tribute, tax, and toll were paid to them.

21 A hora, pues, dad orden que cesen aquellos varones, y no sea esa ciudad edificada, hasta que por mí sea dada nueva orden.

Now give order to make these men to cease, and that this city be not built, until the order shall be given from me;

22 Y mirad bien que no hagáis error en esto, ¿por qué habrá de crecer el daño para perjuicio de los reyes?

and take heed that ye fail not to do this: why should harm grow to the damage of the kings?

23 E ntonces, cuando el traslado de la carta del rey Artajerjes fue leído delante de Rehum, y de Simsai escriba, y sus compañeros, fueron prestamente a Jerusalén a los judíos, y les hicieron cesar con poder y fuerza.

As soon as the copy of king Artaxerxes' letter was read before Rehum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went up in haste to Jerusalem to the Jews, and made them cease by force and power.

24 C esó entonces la obra de la Casa de Dios, la cual estaba en Jerusalén; y cesó hasta el año segundo del reinado de Darío rey de Persia.

Then ceased the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem; and it ceased until the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.
