1 V on den Zeiten aber und Stunden, liebe Brüder, ist nicht not euch zu schreiben;

Now as to the times and the epochs, brethren, you have no need of anything to be written to you.

2 d enn ihr selbst wisset gewiß, daß der Tag des HERRN wird kommen wie ein Dieb in der Nacht.

For you yourselves know full well that the day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night.

3 D enn sie werden sagen: Es ist Friede, es hat keine Gefahr, so wird sie das Verderben schnell überfallen, gleichwie der Schmerz ein schwangeres Weib, und werden nicht entfliehen.

While they are saying, “ Peace and safety!” then destruction will come upon them suddenly like labor pains upon a woman with child, and they will not escape.

4 I hr aber, liebe Brüder, seid nicht in der Finsternis, daß euch der Tag wie ein Dieb ergreife.

But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that the day would overtake you like a thief;

5 I hr seid allzumal Kinder des Lichtes und Kinder des Tages; wir sind nicht von der Nacht noch von der Finsternis.

for you are all sons of light and sons of day. We are not of night nor of darkness;

6 S o lasset uns nun nicht schlafen wie die andern, sondern lasset uns wachen und nüchtern sein.

so then let us not sleep as others do, but let us be alert and sober.

7 D enn die da schlafen, die schlafen des Nachts, und die da trunken sind, die sind des Nachts trunken;

For those who sleep do their sleeping at night, and those who get drunk get drunk at night.

8 w ir aber, die wir des Tages sind, sollen nüchtern sein, angetan mit dem Panzer des Glaubens und der Liebe und mit dem Helm der Hoffnung zur Seligkeit.

But since we are of the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet, the hope of salvation.

9 D enn Gott hat uns nicht gesetzt zum Zorn, sondern die Seligkeit zu besitzen durch unsern HERRN Jesus Christus,

For God has not destined us for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,

10 d er für uns alle gestorben ist, auf daß, wir wachen oder schlafen, wir zugleich mit ihm leben sollen.

who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we will live together with Him.

11 D arum ermahnet euch untereinander und bauet einer den andern, wie ihr denn tut.

Therefore encourage one another and build up one another, just as you also are doing. Christian Conduct

12 W ir bitten aber euch, liebe Brüder, daß ihr erkennet, die an euch arbeiten und euch vorstehen in dem HERRN und euch vermahnen;

But we request of you, brethren, that you appreciate those who diligently labor among you, and have charge over you in the Lord and give you instruction,

13 h abt sie desto lieber um ihres Werks willen und seid friedsam mit ihnen.

and that you esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Live in peace with one another.

14 W ir ermahnen aber euch, liebe Brüder, vermahnet die Ungezogenen, tröstet die Kleinmütigen, traget die Schwachen, seid geduldig gegen jedermann.

We urge you, brethren, admonish the unruly, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with everyone.

15 S ehet zu, daß keiner Böses mit Bösem jemand vergelte; sondern allezeit jaget dem Guten nach, untereinander und gegen jedermann.

See that no one repays another with evil for evil, but always seek after that which is good for one another and for all people.

16 S eid allezeit fröhlich,

Rejoice always;

17 b etet ohne Unterlaß,

pray without ceasing;

18 s eid dankbar in allen Dingen; denn das ist der Wille Gottes in Christo Jesu an euch.

in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

19 D en Geist dämpfet nicht,

Do not quench the Spirit;

20 d ie Weissagung verachtet nicht;

do not despise prophetic utterances.

21 p rüfet aber alles, und das Gute behaltet.

But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good;

22 M eidet allen bösen Schein.

abstain from every form of evil.

23 E r aber, der Gott des Friedens, heilige euch durch und durch, und euer Geist ganz samt Seele und Leib müsse bewahrt werden unsträflich auf die Zukunft unsers HERRN Jesu Christi.

Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

24 G etreu ist er, der euch ruft; er wird's auch tun.

Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass.

25 L iebe Brüder, betet für uns.

Brethren, pray for us.

26 G rüßet alle Brüder mit dem heiligen Kuß.

Greet all the brethren with a holy kiss.

27 I ch beschwöre euch bei dem HERRN, daß ihr diesen Brief lesen lasset vor allen heiligen Brüdern.

I adjure you by the Lord to have this letter read to all the brethren.

28 D ie Gnade unsers HERRN Jesu Christi sei mit euch! Amen.
