1 D arnach zog Jesus umher in Galiläa; denn er wollte nicht in Judäa umherziehen, darum daß ihm die Juden nach dem Leben stellten.

After these things Jesus was walking in Galilee, for He was unwilling to walk in Judea because the Jews were seeking to kill Him.

2 E s war aber nahe der Juden Fest, die Laubhütten.

Now the feast of the Jews, the Feast of Booths, was near.

3 D a sprachen seine Brüder zu ihm: Mache dich auf von dannen und gehe nach Judäa, auf daß auch deine Jünger sehen, die Werke die du tust.

Therefore His brothers said to Him, “Leave here and go into Judea, so that Your disciples also may see Your works which You are doing.

4 N iemand tut etwas im Verborgenen und will doch frei offenbar sein. Tust du solches, so offenbare dich vor der Welt.

For no one does anything in secret when he himself seeks to be known publicly. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world.”

5 D enn auch seine Brüder glaubten nicht an ihn.

For not even His brothers were believing in Him.

6 D a spricht Jesus zu ihnen: Meine Zeit ist noch nicht hier; eure Zeit aber ist allewege.

So Jesus said to them, “ My time is not yet here, but your time is always opportune.

7 D ie Welt kann euch nicht hassen; mich aber haßt sie, denn ich zeuge von ihr, daß ihre Werke böse sind.

The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify of it, that its deeds are evil.

8 G ehet ihr hinauf auf dieses Fest; ich will noch nicht hinaufgehen auf dieses Fest, den meine Zeit ist noch nicht erfüllt.

Go up to the feast yourselves; I do not go up to this feast because My time has not yet fully come.”

9 D a er aber das zu ihnen gesagt, blieb er in Galiläa.

Having said these things to them, He stayed in Galilee.

10 A ls aber seine Brüder waren hinaufgegangen, da ging er auch hinauf zu dem Fest, nicht offenbar, sondern wie heimlich.

But when His brothers had gone up to the feast, then He Himself also went up, not publicly, but as if, in secret.

11 D a suchten ihn die Juden am Fest und sprachen: Wo ist der?

So the Jews were seeking Him at the feast and were saying, “Where is He?”

12 U nd es war ein großes Gemurmel unter dem Volk. Etliche sprachen: Er ist fromm; die andern aber sprachen: Nein, er verführt das Volk.

There was much grumbling among the crowds concerning Him; some were saying, “He is a good man”; others were saying, “No, on the contrary, He leads the people astray.”

13 N iemand aber redete frei von ihm um der Furcht willen vor den Juden.

Yet no one was speaking openly of Him for fear of the Jews.

14 A ber mitten im Fest ging Jesus hinauf in den Tempel und lehrte.

But when it was now the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and began to teach.

15 U nd die Juden verwunderten sich und sprachen: Wie kann dieser die Schrift, so er sie doch nicht gelernt hat?

The Jews then were astonished, saying, “How has this man become learned, having never been educated?”

16 J esus antwortete ihnen und sprach: Meine Lehre ist nicht mein, sondern des, der mich gesandt hat.

So Jesus answered them and said, “ My teaching is not Mine, but His who sent Me.

17 S o jemand will des Willen tun, der wird innewerden, ob diese Lehre von Gott sei, oder ob ich von mir selbst rede.

If anyone is willing to do His will, he will know of the teaching, whether it is of God or whether I speak from Myself.

18 W er von sich selbst redet, der sucht seine eigene Ehre; wer aber sucht die Ehre des, der ihn gesandt hat, der ist wahrhaftig, und ist keine Ungerechtigkeit an ihm.

He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but He who is seeking the glory of the One who sent Him, He is true, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.

19 H at euch nicht Mose das Gesetz gegeben? und niemand unter euch tut das Gesetz. Warum sucht ihr mich zu töten?

“ Did not Moses give you the Law, and yet none of you carries out the Law? Why do you seek to kill Me?”

20 D as Volk antwortete und sprach: Du hast den Teufel; wer versucht dich zu töten?

The crowd answered, “ You have a demon! Who seeks to kill You?”

21 J esus antwortete und sprach: Ein einziges Werk habe ich getan, und es wundert euch alle.

Jesus answered them, “I did one deed, and you all marvel.

22 M ose hat euch darum gegeben die Beschneidung, nicht daß sie von Mose kommt, sondern von den Vätern, und ihr beschneidet den Menschen am Sabbat.

For this reason Moses has given you circumcision (not because it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and on the Sabbath you circumcise a man.

23 S o ein Mensch die Beschneidung annimmt am Sabbat, auf daß nicht das Gesetz Mose's gebrochen werde, zürnet ihr denn über mich, daß ich den ganzen Menschen habe am Sabbat gesund gemacht?

If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath so that the Law of Moses will not be broken, are you angry with Me because I made an entire man well on the Sabbath?

24 R ichtet nicht nach dem Ansehen, sondern richtet ein rechtes Gericht.

Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.”

25 D a sprachen etliche aus Jerusalem: Ist das nicht der, den sie suchten zu töten?

So some of the people of Jerusalem were saying, “Is this not the man whom they are seeking to kill?

26 U nd siehe zu, er redet frei, und sie sagen nichts. Erkennen unsere Obersten nun gewiß, daß er gewiß Christus sei?

Look, He is speaking publicly, and they are saying nothing to Him. The rulers do not really know that this is the Christ, do they?

27 D och wir wissen, woher dieser ist; wenn aber Christus kommen wird, so wird niemand wissen, woher er ist.

However, we know where this man is from; but whenever the Christ may come, no one knows where He is from.”

28 D a rief Jesus im Tempel und sprach: Ja, ihr kennet mich und wisset, woher ich bin; und von mir selbst bin ich nicht gekommen, sondern es ist ein Wahrhaftiger, der mich gesandt hat, welchen ihr nicht kennet.

Then Jesus cried out in the temple, teaching and saying, “ You both know Me and know where I am from; and I have not come of Myself, but He who sent Me is true, whom you do not know.

29 I ch kenne ihn aber; denn ich bin von ihm, und er hat mich gesandt.

I know Him, because I am from Him, and He sent Me.”

30 D a suchten sie ihn zu greifen; aber niemand legte die Hand an ihn, denn seine Stunde war noch nicht gekommen.

So they were seeking to seize Him; and no man laid his hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come.

31 A ber viele vom Volk glaubten an ihn und sprachen: Wenn Christus kommen wird, wird er auch mehr Zeichen tun, denn dieser tut?

But many of the crowd believed in Him; and they were saying, “ When the Christ comes, He will not perform more signs than those which this man has, will He?”

32 U nd es kam vor die Pharisäer, daß das Volk solches von ihm murmelte. Da sandten die Pharisäer und Hohenpriester Knechte aus, das sie ihn griffen.

The Pharisees heard the crowd muttering these things about Him, and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent officers to seize Him.

33 D a sprach Jesus zu ihnen: Ich bin noch eine kleine Zeit bei euch, und dann gehe ich hin zu dem, der mich gesandt hat.

Therefore Jesus said, “ For a little while longer I am with you, then I go to Him who sent Me.

34 I hr werdet mich suchen, und nicht finden; und wo ich bin, könnet ihr nicht hin kommen.

You will seek Me, and will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come.”

35 D a sprachen die Juden untereinander: Wo soll dieser hin gehen, daß wir ihn nicht finden sollen? Will er zu den Zerstreuten unter den Griechen gehen und die Griechen lehren?

The Jews then said to one another, “ Where does this man intend to go that we will not find Him? He is not intending to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks, is He?

36 W as ist das für eine Rede, daß er sagte: "Ihr werdet mich suchen, und nicht finden; und wo ich bin, da könnet ihr nicht hin kommen"?

What is this statement that He said, ‘ You will seek Me, and will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come’ ?”

37 A ber am letzten Tage des Festes, der am herrlichsten war, trat Jesus auf, rief und sprach: Wen da dürstet, der komme zu mir und trinke!

Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “ If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink.

38 W er an mich glaubt, wie die Schrift sagt, von des Leibe werden Ströme des lebendigen Wassers fließen.

He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’”

39 D as sagte er aber von dem Geist, welchen empfangen sollten, die an ihn glaubten; denn der Heilige Geist war noch nicht da, denn Jesus war noch nicht verklärt.

But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. Division of People over Jesus

40 V iele nun vom Volk, die diese Rede hörten, sprachen: Dieser ist wahrlich der Prophet.

Some of the people therefore, when they heard these words, were saying, “This certainly is the Prophet.”

41 A ndere sprachen: Er ist Christus. Etliche aber sprachen: Soll Christus aus Galiläa kommen?

Others were saying, “This is the Christ.” Still others were saying, “ Surely the Christ is not going to come from Galilee, is He?

42 S pricht nicht die Schrift: von dem Samen Davids und aus dem Flecken Bethlehem, da David war, soll Christus kommen?

Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the descendants of David, and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?”

43 A lso ward eine Zwietracht unter dem Volk über ihn.

So a division occurred in the crowd because of Him.

44 E s wollten aber etliche ihn greifen; aber niemand legte die Hand an ihn.

Some of them wanted to seize Him, but no one laid hands on Him.

45 D ie Knechte kamen zu den Hohenpriestern und Pharisäern; und sie sprachen zu ihnen: Warum habt ihr ihn nicht gebracht?

The officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, “Why did you not bring Him?”

46 D ie Knechte antworteten: Es hat nie ein Mensch also geredet wie dieser Mensch.

The officers answered, “ Never has a man spoken the way this man speaks.”

47 D a antworteten ihnen die Pharisäer: Seid ihr auch verführt?

The Pharisees then answered them, “ You have not also been led astray, have you?

48 G laubt auch irgendein Oberster oder Pharisäer an ihn?

No one of the rulers or Pharisees has believed in Him, has he?

49 s ondern das Volk, das nichts vom Gesetz weiß, ist verflucht.

But this crowd which does not know the Law is accursed.”

50 S pricht zu ihnen Nikodemus, der bei der Nacht zu ihm kam, welcher einer unter ihnen war:

Nicodemus (he who came to Him before, being one of them) said to them,

51 R ichtet unser Gesetz auch einen Menschen, ehe man ihn verhört und erkennt, was er tut?

“ Our Law does not judge a man unless it first hears from him and knows what he is doing, does it?”

52 S ie antworteten und sprachen zu ihm: Bist du auch ein Galiläer? Forsche und siehe, aus Galiläa steht kein Prophet auf.

They answered him, “ You are not also from Galilee, are you? Search, and see that no prophet arises out of Galilee.”

53 U nd ein jeglicher ging also heim.
