A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one’s birth.

2 П о-добре да отиде някой в дом, където жалеят за умрял, отколкото да отиде в дом на пируване; защото това е кончината на всеки човек и живият може да го вложи в сърцето си.

It is better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the house of feasting: for that is the end of all men; and the living will lay it to his heart.

3 П о-полезна е печалта от смеха; защото от натъжеността на лицето сърцето се развеселява.

Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better.

4 С ърцето на мъдрите е в дома, където жалеят, а сърцето на безумните е в дома на веселие.

The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.

5 П о-добре е човек да слуша изобличение от мъдрия, отколкото да слуша песен от безумните;

It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools.

6 з ащото какъвто е шумът на тръните под котела, такъв е смехът на безумния. И това е суета.

For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool: this also is vanity.

7 Н аистина изнудването прави мъдрия да обезумява; и подарък покварява сърцето.

Surely oppression maketh a wise man mad; and a gift destroyeth the heart.

8 З а предпочитане е свършването на работата, отколкото започването ѝ; по-добър е търпеливият, отколкото високомерният.

Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.

9 Н е бързай да се разгневиш в духа си; защото гневът почива на гърдите на безумните.

Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.

10 Д а не кажеш: Коя е причината, че предишните дни бяха по-добри от сегашните? Защото не питаш разумно за това.

Say not thou, What is the cause that the former days were better than these? for thou dost not enquire wisely concerning this.

11 М ъдростта е толкова ценна, колкото е наследството, даже и по-ценна е за онези, които гледат слънцето;

Wisdom is good with an inheritance: and by it there is profit to them that see the sun.

12 з ащото не само че мъдростта е защита, както и парите са защита, но предимството на знанието е, че мъдростта запазва живота на онези, които я имат.

For wisdom is a defence, and money is a defence: but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom giveth life to them that have it.

13 Р азгледай делото Божие; защото кой може да изправи онова, което Той е направил криво?

Consider the work of God: for who can make that straight, which he hath made crooked?

14 В ъв време на благоденствие бъди весел, а във време на злополука бъди разсъдлив; защото Бог постави едното до другото, за да не може човек да открие нищо, което ще бъде след него.

In the day of prosperity be joyful, but in the day of adversity consider: God also hath set the one over against the other, to the end that man should find nothing after him.

15 В сичко това видях в суетните си дни: има праведен, който загива в правдата си, и има нечестив, който упорства в злотворството си.

All things have I seen in the days of my vanity: there is a just man that perisheth in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man that prolongeth his life in his wickedness.

16 Н е ставай прекалено праведен и не мисли себе си за много мъдър; защо да се погубиш?

Be not righteous over much; neither make thyself over wise: why shouldest thou destroy thyself?

17 Н е ставай прекалено зъл и не бъди безумен; защо да умреш преди времето си?

Be not over much wicked, neither be thou foolish: why shouldest thou die before thy time?

18 Д обре е да се придържаш към едното и да не оттегляш ръката си от другото; защото който се бои от Бога, ще се отърве и от двете.

It is good that thou shouldest take hold of this; yea, also from this withdraw not thine hand: for he that feareth God shall come forth of them all.

19 М ъдростта крепи мъдрия повече от десетина началника, които са в града.

Wisdom strengtheneth the wise more than ten mighty men which are in the city.

20 Н аистина няма праведен човек на земята, който да прави добро и да не греши.

For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.

21 И не обръщай внимание на всички думи, които се говорят, да не би да чуеш слугата си да те кълне;

Also take no heed unto all words that are spoken; lest thou hear thy servant curse thee:

22 з ащото сърцето ти познава, че и ти подобно си проклинал други много пъти.

for oftentimes also thine own heart knoweth that thou thyself likewise hast cursed others.

23 В сичко това опитах чрез мъдростта. Казах: Ще бъда мъдър; но мъдростта се отдалечи от мен.

All this have I proved by wisdom: I said, I will be wise; but it was far from me.

24 О нова, което е, е много далеч и твърде дълбоко; кой може да го намери?

That which is far off, and exceeding deep, who can find it out?

25 А з отново от сърце се посветих да науча, да издиря и да изследвам мъдростта и разума, и да позная, че нечестието е безумие и че глупостта е лудост.

I applied mine heart to know, and to search, and to seek out wisdom, and the reason of things, and to know the wickedness of folly, even of foolishness and madness:

26 И намирам, че е по-горчива от смърт онази жена, чието сърце е примки и мрежи и ръцете ѝ - окови; който е добър пред Бога, ще се отърве от нея; а грешникът ще бъде хванат от нея.

and I find more bitter than death the woman, whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands as bands: whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her.

27 В иж, това намерих, казва проповедникът, като изпитвах нещата едно по едно, за да намеря причината

Behold, this have I found, saith the preacher, counting one by one, to find out the account:

28 ( и душата ми още го изследва, но не съм го намерил); един мъж между хиляда намерих; но нито една жена между толкова жени не намерих.

which yet my soul seeketh, but I find not: one man among a thousand have I found; but a woman among all those have I not found.

29 Е то, това само намерих, че Бог направи човека праведен, но те изнамериха много измислици.

Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions.
