1 A l direttore del coro. Salmo di Davide. Signore, tu mi hai esaminato e mi conosci.

O lord, thou hast searched me, and known me.

2 T u sai quando mi siedo e quando mi alzo, tu comprendi da lontano il mio pensiero.

Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off.

3 T u mi scruti quando cammino e quando riposo e conosci a fondo tutte le mie vie.

Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways.

4 P oiché la parola non è ancora sulla mia lingua, che tu, Signore, già la conosci appieno.

For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O Lord, thou knowest it altogether.

5 T u mi circondi, mi stai di fronte e alle spalle e poni la tua mano su di me.

Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me.

6 L a conoscenza che hai di me è meravigliosa, troppo alta perché io possa arrivarci.

Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it.

7 D ove potrei andarmene lontano dal tuo Spirito, dove fuggirò dalla tua presenza?

Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?

8 S e salgo in cielo tu ci sei; se scendo nel soggiorno dei morti, eccoti là.

If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.

9 S e prendo le ali dell’alba e vado ad abitare all’estremità del mare,

If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea;

10 a nche là mi condurrà la tua mano e mi afferrerà la tua destra.

Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.

11 S e dico: «Certo le tenebre mi nasconderanno e la luce diventerà notte intorno a me»,

If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me.

12 l e tenebre stesse non possono nasconderti nulla e la notte per te è chiara come il giorno; le tenebre e la luce ti sono uguali.

Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee.

13 S ei tu che hai formato le mie reni, che mi hai intessuto nel seno di mia madre.

For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb.

14 I o ti celebrerò, perché sono stato fatto in modo stupendo. Meravigliose sono le tue opere, e l’anima mia lo sa molto bene.

I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.

15 L e mie ossa non ti erano nascoste, quando fui formato in segreto e intessuto nelle profondità della terra.

My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.

16 I tuoi occhi videro la massa informe del mio corpo, e nel tuo libro erano tutti scritti i giorni che mi erano destinati, quando nessuno d’essi era sorto ancora.

Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.

17 O h, quanto mi sono preziosi i tuoi pensieri, o Dio! Quant’è grande il loro insieme!

How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them!

18 S e li voglio contare, sono più numerosi della sabbia; quando mi sveglio sono ancora con te.

If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand: when I awake, I am still with thee.

19 C erto, tu ucciderai l’empio, o Dio; perciò allontanatevi da me uomini sanguinari.

Surely thou wilt slay the wicked, O God: depart from me therefore, ye bloody men.

20 E ssi parlano contro di te malvagiamente; i tuoi nemici si servono del tuo nome per sostenere la menzogna.

For they speak against thee wickedly, and thine enemies take thy name in vain.

21 S ignore, non odio forse quelli che ti odiano? E non detesto quelli che insorgono contro di te?

Do not I hate them, O Lord, that hate thee? and am not I grieved with those that rise up against thee?

22 I o li odio di un odio perfetto; li considero miei nemici.

I hate them with perfect hatred: I count them mine enemies.

23 E saminami, o Dio, e conosci il mio cuore. Mettimi alla prova e conosci i miei pensieri.

Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:

24 V edi se c’è in me qualche via iniqua e guidami per la via eterna.

And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
