1 C elebrate il Signore, perché egli è buono, perché la sua bontà dura in eterno!

O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.

2 C osì dicano i riscattati del Signore, che egli liberò dalla mano dell’avversario

Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy;

3 e riunì da tutti i paesi, da oriente e da occidente, da settentrione e da mezzogiorno.

And gathered them out of the lands, from the east, and from the west, from the north, and from the south.

4 E ssi vagavano nel deserto per vie desolate; non trovavano città dove poter abitare.

They wandered in the wilderness in a solitary way; they found no city to dwell in.

5 S offrivano la fame e la sete, l’anima veniva meno in loro.

Hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted in them.

6 M a nella loro angoscia gridarono al Signore ed egli li liberò dalle loro tribolazioni.

Then they cried unto the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them out of their distresses.

7 L i condusse per la retta via, perché giungessero a una città da abitare.

And he led them forth by the right way, that they might go to a city of habitation.

8 C elebrino il Signore per la sua bontà e per i suoi prodigi in favore degli uomini!

Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!

9 P oiché egli ha ristorato l’anima assetata e ha colmato di beni l’anima affamata.

For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.

10 A ltri dimoravano in tenebre e in ombra di morte, prigionieri nell’afflizione e nelle catene,

Such as sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, being bound in affliction and iron;

11 p erché si erano ribellati alle parole di Dio e avevano disprezzato gli avvertimenti dell’Altissimo;

Because they rebelled against the words of God, and contemned the counsel of the most High:

12 p erciò egli umiliò i loro cuori nella sofferenza; essi caddero, e nessuno li soccorse.

Therefore he brought down their heart with labour; they fell down, and there was none to help.

13 G ridarono al Signore nella loro angoscia ed egli li salvò dalle loro tribolazioni;

Then they cried unto the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them out of their distresses.

14 l i fece uscire dalle tenebre e dall’ombra di morte, spezzò le loro catene.

He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and brake their bands in sunder.

15 C elebrino il Signore per la sua bontà e per i suoi prodigi in favore degli uomini!

Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!

16 P oiché egli ha sfondato porte di bronzo e ha spezzato sbarre di ferro.

For he hath broken the gates of brass, and cut the bars of iron in sunder.

17 S offrivano, gli stolti, per il loro comportamento ribelle e per le proprie colpe;

Fools because of their transgression, and because of their iniquities, are afflicted.

18 l ’anima loro rifiutava qualsiasi cibo ed erano giunti fino alle soglie della morte.

Their soul abhorreth all manner of meat; and they draw near unto the gates of death.

19 N ell’angoscia gridarono al Signore ed egli li liberò dalle loro tribolazioni.

Then they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, and he saveth them out of their distresses.

20 M andò la sua parola e li guarì, li salvò dalla morte.

He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.

21 C elebrino il Signore per la sua bontà e per i suoi prodigi in favore degli uomini!

Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!

22 O ffrano sacrifici di lode e raccontino le sue opere con gioia!

And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and declare his works with rejoicing.

23 Q uelli che solcano il mare su navi e trafficano sulle grandi acque,

They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters;

24 v edono le opere del Signore e le sue meraviglie negli abissi marini.

These see the works of the Lord, and his wonders in the deep.

25 E gli comanda, e fa soffiare la tempesta che solleva le onde.

For he commandeth, and raiseth the stormy wind, which lifteth up the waves thereof.

26 S algono al cielo, scendono negli abissi; l’anima loro vien meno per l’angoscia.

They mount up to the heaven, they go down again to the depths: their soul is melted because of trouble.

27 T raballano, barcollano come ubriachi e tutta la loro abilità svanisce.

They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wit's end.

28 M a nell’angoscia gridano al Signore ed egli li libera dalle loro tribolazioni.

Then they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, and he bringeth them out of their distresses.

29 E gli riduce la tempesta al silenzio e le onde del mare si calmano.

He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still.

30 S i rallegrano alla vista delle acque calme ed egli li conduce al porto tanto sospirato.

Then are they glad because they be quiet; so he bringeth them unto their desired haven.

31 C elebrino il Signore per la sua bontà e per i suoi prodigi in favore degli uomini.

Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!

32 L o esaltino nell’assemblea del popolo e lo lodino nel consiglio degli anziani!

Let them exalt him also in the congregation of the people, and praise him in the assembly of the elders.

33 E gli muta i fiumi in deserto e le fonti d’acqua in luoghi aridi;

He turneth rivers into a wilderness, and the watersprings into dry ground;

34 l a terra fertile in pianura di sale, per la malvagità dei suoi abitanti.

A fruitful land into barrenness, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein.

35 E gli muta il deserto in lago e la terra arida in fonti d’acqua.

He turneth the wilderness into a standing water, and dry ground into watersprings.

36 L à fa risiedere gli affamati ed essi fondano una città da abitare.

And there he maketh the hungry to dwell, that they may prepare a city for habitation;

37 V i seminano campi e vi piantano vigne e ne raccolgono frutti abbondanti.

And sow the fields, and plant vineyards, which may yield fruits of increase.

38 E gli li benedice perché crescano di numero e non lascia diminuire il loro bestiame.

He blesseth them also, so that they are multiplied greatly; and suffereth not their cattle to decrease.

39 M a poi, ridotti a pochi, sono umiliati per l’oppressione, per l’avversità e gli affanni.

Again, they are minished and brought low through oppression, affliction, and sorrow.

40 E gli getta il disprezzo sui potenti e li fa errare per deserti senza strade;

He poureth contempt upon princes, and causeth them to wander in the wilderness, where there is no way.

41 m a solleva il povero dalla miseria e rende le famiglie numerose come greggi.

Yet setteth he the poor on high from affliction, and maketh him families like a flock.

42 G li uomini retti lo vedono, si rallegrano e ogni malvagio ha la bocca chiusa.

The righteous shall see it, and rejoice: and all iniquity shall stop her mouth.

43 C hi è saggio osservi queste cose e consideri la bontà del Signore.

Whoso is wise, and will observe these things, even they shall understand the lovingkindness of the Lord.
