1 D opo queste cose e questi atti di fedeltà di Ezechia, Sennacherib, re d’Assiria, venne in Giuda e cinse d’assedio le città fortificate, con l’intenzione d’impadronirsene.

After these things, and the establishment thereof, Sennacherib king of Assyria came, and entered into Judah, and encamped against the fenced cities, and thought to win them for himself.

2 Q uando Ezechia vide che Sennacherib era giunto e si proponeva di attaccare Gerusalemme,

And when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib was come, and that he was purposed to fight against Jerusalem,

3 d eliberò con i suoi capi e con i suoi uomini valorosi di turare le sorgenti d’acqua che erano fuori della città; ed essi gli prestarono aiuto.

He took counsel with his princes and his mighty men to stop the waters of the fountains which were without the city: and they did help him.

4 S i radunò dunque un gran numero di gente e turarono tutte le sorgenti e il torrente che scorreva attraverso il paese. «Perché», dicevano essi, «i re d’Assiria, venendo, dovrebbero trovare abbondanza d’acqua?»

So there was gathered much people together, who stopped all the fountains, and the brook that ran through the midst of the land, saying, Why should the kings of Assyria come, and find much water?

5 E zechia prese coraggio e ricostruì tutte le mura dov’erano diroccate; rialzò le torri, costruì l’altro muro di fuori, fortificò Millo, nella città di Davide, e fece fare una gran quantità d’armi e di scudi.

Also he strengthened himself, and built up all the wall that was broken, and raised it up to the towers, and another wall without, and repaired Millo in the city of David, and made darts and shields in abundance.

6 D iede dei capi militari al popolo, li riunì presso di sé sulla piazza della porta della città e parlò al loro cuore, dicendo:

And he set captains of war over the people, and gathered them together to him in the street of the gate of the city, and spake comfortably to them, saying,

7 « Siate forti e coraggiosi! Non temete e non vi sgomentate a causa del re d’Assiria e della moltitudine che l’accompagna; perché con noi è uno più grande di ciò che è con lui.

Be strong and courageous, be not afraid nor dismayed for the king of Assyria, nor for all the multitude that is with him: for there be more with us than with him:

8 C on lui è un braccio di carne; con noi è il Signore nostro Dio, per aiutarci e combattere le nostre battaglie». E il popolo fu rassicurato dalle parole di Ezechia, re di Giuda.

With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the Lord our God to help us, and to fight our battles. And the people rested themselves upon the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.

9 D opo questo, Sennacherib, re d’Assiria, mentre stava di fronte a Lachis con tutte le sue forze, mandò i suoi servitori a Gerusalemme per dire a Ezechia, re di Giuda, e a tutti quelli di Giuda che si trovavano a Gerusalemme:

After this did Sennacherib king of Assyria send his servants to Jerusalem, (but he himself laid siege against Lachish, and all his power with him,) unto Hezekiah king of Judah, and unto all Judah that were at Jerusalem, saying,

10 « Così parla Sennacherib, re degli Assiri: “In chi confidate voi per rimanervene così assediati in Gerusalemme?

Thus saith Sennacherib king of Assyria, Whereon do ye trust, that ye abide in the siege in Jerusalem?

11 E zechia v’inganna per ridurvi a morire di fame e di sete, quando dice: ‘Il Signore, nostro Dio, ci libererà dalle mani del re d’Assiria!’

Doth not Hezekiah persuade you to give over yourselves to die by famine and by thirst, saying, The Lord our God shall deliver us out of the hand of the king of Assyria?

12 N on è lo stesso Ezechia che ha distrutto gli alti luoghi e gli altari del Signore, e che ha detto a Giuda e a Gerusalemme: ‘Voi adorerete davanti a un unico altare e su quello offrirete profumi’?

Hath not the same Hezekiah taken away his high places and his altars, and commanded Judah and Jerusalem, saying, Ye shall worship before one altar, and burn incense upon it?

13 N on sapete voi quello che io e i miei padri abbiamo fatto a tutti i popoli degli altri paesi? Gli dèi delle nazioni di quei paesi hanno forse potuto liberare i loro paesi dalla mia mano?

Know ye not what I and my fathers have done unto all the people of other lands? were the gods of the nations of those lands any ways able to deliver their lands out of mine hand?

14 Q ual è, fra tutti gli dèi di queste nazioni che i miei padri hanno sterminate, quello che abbia potuto liberare il suo popolo dalla mia mano? Potrebbe il vostro Dio liberarvi dalla mia mano?

Who was there among all the gods of those nations that my fathers utterly destroyed, that could deliver his people out of mine hand, that your God should be able to deliver you out of mine hand?

15 O ra Ezechia non v’inganni e non vi svii in questa maniera; non gli prestate fede! Poiché nessun dio d’alcuna nazione o d’alcun regno ha potuto liberare il suo popolo dalla mia mano o dalla mano dei miei padri; quanto meno potrà il Dio vostro liberare voi dalla mia mano!”».

Now therefore let not Hezekiah deceive you, nor persuade you on this manner, neither yet believe him: for no god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people out of mine hand, and out of the hand of my fathers: how much less shall your God deliver you out of mine hand?

16 I servi di Sennacherib parlarono ancora contro il Signore Dio e contro il suo servo Ezechia.

And his servants spake yet more against the Lord God, and against his servant Hezekiah.

17 S ennacherib scrisse pure delle lettere, insultando il Signore, Dio d’Israele, e parlando contro di lui, in questi termini: «Come gli dèi delle nazioni degli altri paesi non hanno potuto liberare i loro popoli dalla mia mano, così neanche il Dio di Ezechia potrà liberare dalla mia mano il suo popolo».

He wrote also letters to rail on the Lord God of Israel, and to speak against him, saying, As the gods of the nations of other lands have not delivered their people out of mine hand, so shall not the God of Hezekiah deliver his people out of mine hand.

18 I servitori di Sennacherib gridarono ad alta voce, in lingua giudaica, rivolgendosi al popolo di Gerusalemme che stava sulle mura, per spaventarlo e atterrirlo, e potersi così impadronire della città.

Then they cried with a loud voice in the Jews' speech unto the people of Jerusalem that were on the wall, to affright them, and to trouble them; that they might take the city.

19 E parlarono del Dio di Gerusalemme come degli dèi dei popoli della terra, che sono opera di mano d’uomo.

And they spake against the God of Jerusalem, as against the gods of the people of the earth, which were the work of the hands of man.

20 A llora il re Ezechia e il profeta Isaia, figlio di Amots, pregarono a questo proposito e alzarono fino al cielo il loro grido.

And for this cause Hezekiah the king, and the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz, prayed and cried to heaven.

21 I l Signore mandò un angelo che sterminò nell’accampamento del re d’Assiria tutti gli uomini forti e valorosi, i prìncipi e i capi. Il re se ne tornò svergognato al suo paese. Come fu entrato nella casa del suo dio, i suoi propri figli lo uccisero là con la spada.

And the Lord sent an angel, which cut off all the mighty men of valour, and the leaders and captains in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned with shame of face to his own land. And when he was come into the house of his god, they that came forth of his own bowels slew him there with the sword.

22 C osì il Signore salvò Ezechia e gli abitanti di Gerusalemme dalla mano di Sennacherib, re d’Assiria, e dalla mano di tutti gli altri, e rese sicure le loro frontiere.

Thus the Lord saved Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib the king of Assyria, and from the hand of all other, and guided them on every side.

23 M olti portarono a Gerusalemme offerte al Signore e oggetti preziosi a Ezechia, re di Giuda, il quale, da allora, acquistò prestigio agli occhi di tutte le nazioni. Malattia e guarigione di Ezechia

And many brought gifts unto the Lord to Jerusalem, and presents to Hezekiah king of Judah: so that he was magnified in the sight of all nations from thenceforth.

24 I n quel tempo Ezechia fu colpito da una malattia che doveva condurlo alla morte; egli pregò il Signore, e il Signore gli parlò e gli concesse un segno.

In those days Hezekiah was sick to the death, and prayed unto the Lord: and he spake unto him, and he gave him a sign.

25 M a Ezechia non fu riconoscente del beneficio ricevuto, poiché il suo cuore s’inorgoglì; e l’ira del Signore si volse contro di lui, contro Giuda e contro Gerusalemme.

But Hezekiah rendered not again according to the benefit done unto him; for his heart was lifted up: therefore there was wrath upon him, and upon Judah and Jerusalem.

26 T uttavia Ezechia si umiliò per essersi inorgoglito in cuor suo, tanto egli quanto gli abitanti di Gerusalemme; perciò l’ira del Signore non si riversò sopra di loro durante la vita di Ezechia.

Notwithstanding Hezekiah humbled himself for the pride of his heart, both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the wrath of the Lord came not upon them in the days of Hezekiah.

27 E zechia ebbe immense ricchezze e grandissima gloria, e si costruì: depositi per riporvi argento, oro, pietre preziose, aromi, scudi, ogni sorta d’oggetti di valore;

And Hezekiah had exceeding much riches and honour: and he made himself treasuries for silver, and for gold, and for precious stones, and for spices, and for shields, and for all manner of pleasant jewels;

28 m agazzini per il grano, il vino, l’olio; stalle per ogni sorta di bestiame e ovili per le pecore.

Storehouses also for the increase of corn, and wine, and oil; and stalls for all manner of beasts, and cotes for flocks.

29 S i costruì delle città ed ebbe greggi e mandrie in abbondanza, perché Dio gli aveva dato beni in gran quantità.

Moreover he provided him cities, and possessions of flocks and herds in abundance: for God had given him substance very much.

30 E zechia fu colui che turò la sorgente superiore delle acque di Ghion e le convogliò giù direttamente attraverso il lato occidentale della città di Davide. Ezechia riuscì felicemente in tutte le sue imprese.

This same Hezekiah also stopped the upper watercourse of Gihon, and brought it straight down to the west side of the city of David. And Hezekiah prospered in all his works.

31 T uttavia, quando i capi di Babilonia gli inviarono dei messaggeri per informarsi del prodigio che era avvenuto nel paese, Dio lo abbandonò per metterlo alla prova e conoscere tutto quello che egli aveva in cuore.

Howbeit in the business of the ambassadors of the princes of Babylon, who sent unto him to enquire of the wonder that was done in the land, God left him, to try him, that he might know all that was in his heart.

32 L e rimanenti azioni di Ezechia e le sue opere pie si trovano scritte nella visione del profeta Isaia, figlio di Amots, inserita nel libro dei re di Giuda e d’Israele.

Now the rest of the acts of Hezekiah, and his goodness, behold, they are written in the vision of Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, and in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.

33 E zechia si addormentò con i suoi padri e fu sepolto sulla salita delle tombe dei figli di Davide; alla sua morte tutto Giuda e gli abitanti di Gerusalemme gli resero onore. Manasse, suo figlio, regnò al suo posto.

And Hezekiah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the chiefest of the sepulchres of the sons of David: and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem did him honour at his death. And Manasseh his son reigned in his stead.
