1 M i sono messo poi a considerare tutte le oppressioni che si commettono sotto il sole; ed ecco, le lacrime degli oppressi, i quali non hanno chi li consoli; da parte dei loro oppressori c’è la violenza, mentre quelli non hanno chi li consoli.

So I returned, and considered all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and behold the tears of such as were oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power; but they had no comforter.

2 P erciò ho stimato i morti, che sono già morti, più felici dei vivi, che sono vivi tuttora;

Wherefore I praised the dead which are already dead more than the living which are yet alive.

3 p iù felice degli uni e degli altri è colui che non è ancora venuto all’esistenza, e non ha ancora visto le azioni malvagie che si commettono sotto il sole.

Yea, better is he than both they, which hath not yet been, who hath not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.

4 H o anche visto che ogni fatica e ogni buona riuscita nel lavoro provocano invidia dell’uno contro l’altro. Anche questo è vanità, un correre dietro al vento.

Again, I considered all travail, and every right work, that for this a man is envied of his neighbour. This is also vanity and vexation of spirit.

5 L o stolto incrocia le braccia e divora la sua carne.

The fool foldeth his hands together, and eateth his own flesh.

6 V ale più una mano piena, con riposo, che entrambe le mani piene, con travaglio e corsa dietro al vento.

Better is an handful with quietness, than both the hands full with travail and vexation of spirit.

7 H o anche visto un’altra vanità sotto il sole:

Then I returned, and I saw vanity under the sun.

8 u n tale è solo, senza nessuno che gli stia vicino; non ha né figlio né fratello, e tuttavia si affatica senza fine, i suoi occhi non si saziano mai di ricchezze. Non riflette: «Ma per chi dunque mi affatico e mi privo di ogni bene?» Anche questa è una vanità, un’ingrata occupazione.

There is one alone, and there is not a second; yea, he hath neither child nor brother: yet is there no end of all his labour; neither is his eye satisfied with riches; neither saith he, For whom do I labour, and bereave my soul of good? This is also vanity, yea, it is a sore travail.

9 D ue valgono più di uno solo, perché sono ben ricompensati della loro fatica.

Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour.

10 I nfatti, se l’uno cade, l’altro rialza il suo compagno; ma guai a chi è solo e cade senza avere un altro che lo rialzi!

For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.

11 C osì pure, se due dormono assieme, si riscaldano; ma chi è solo come farà a riscaldarsi?

Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone?

12 S e uno tenta di sopraffare chi è solo, due gli terranno testa; una corda a tre capi non si rompe così presto.

And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

13 M eglio un ragazzo povero e saggio che un re vecchio e stolto che non sa più ascoltare i consigli.

Better is a poor and a wise child than an old and foolish king, who will no more be admonished.

14 È uscito di prigione per essere re: egli, che era nato povero nel suo futuro regno.

For out of prison he cometh to reign; whereas also he that is born in his kingdom becometh poor.

15 H o visto tutti i viventi che vanno e vengono sotto il sole unirsi al ragazzo che doveva succedere al re e regnare al suo posto.

I considered all the living which walk under the sun, with the second child that shall stand up in his stead.

16 E ra immensa la moltitudine di tutti coloro alla cui testa egli si trovava. Eppure, quelli che verranno in seguito non si rallegreranno di lui! Anche questo è vanità e un correre dietro al vento.

There is no end of all the people, even of all that have been before them: they also that come after shall not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and vexation of spirit.
