1 A llora il Signore rispose a Giobbe dal seno della tempesta e disse:

Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said,

2 « Chi è costui che oscura i miei disegni con parole prive di senno?

Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge?

3 C ingiti i fianchi come un prode; io ti farò delle domande e tu insegnami!

Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me.

4 D ov’eri tu quando io fondavo la terra? Dillo, se hai tanta intelligenza.

Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.

5 C hi ne fissò le dimensioni, se lo sai, o chi tirò sopra di essa la corda da misurare?

Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it?

6 S u che furono poggiate le sue fondamenta, o chi ne pose la pietra angolare,

Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof;

7 q uando le stelle del mattino cantavano tutte assieme e tutti i figli di Dio alzavano grida di gioia?

When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

8 C hi chiuse con porte il mare balzante fuori dal grembo materno,

Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it brake forth, as if it had issued out of the womb?

9 q uando gli diedi le nubi come rivestimento e per fasce l’oscurità,

When I made the cloud the garment thereof, and thick darkness a swaddlingband for it,

10 q uando gli tracciai dei confini, gli misi sbarre e porte?

And brake up for it my decreed place, and set bars and doors,

11 A llora gli dissi: “Fin qui tu verrai, e non oltre; qui si fermerà l’orgoglio dei tuoi flutti”.

And said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further: and here shall thy proud waves be stayed?

12 H ai tu mai, in vita tua, comandato al mattino, o insegnato il suo luogo all’aurora

Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days; and caused the dayspring to know his place;

13 p erché essa afferri i lembi della terra e ne scuota via i malvagi?

That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it?

14 L a terra si trasfigura come creta sotto il sigillo e appare come vestita di un ricco manto;

It is turned as clay to the seal; and they stand as a garment.

15 i malfattori sono privati della luce loro, e il braccio, alzato già, è spezzato.

And from the wicked their light is withholden, and the high arm shall be broken.

16 S ei tu penetrato fino alle sorgenti del mare? Hai tu passeggiato in fondo all’abisso?

Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea? or hast thou walked in the search of the depth?

17 L e porte della morte sono state da te scoperte? Hai tu veduto le porte dell’ombra di morte?

Have the gates of death been opened unto thee? or hast thou seen the doors of the shadow of death?

18 H ai tu abbracciato con lo sguardo l’ampiezza della terra? Parla, se la conosci tutta!

Hast thou perceived the breadth of the earth? declare if thou knowest it all.

19 D ov’è la via che guida al soggiorno della luce? Le tenebre dove hanno la loro sede?

Where is the way where light dwelleth? and as for darkness, where is the place thereof,

20 L e puoi tu guidare verso i loro domini e conosci i sentieri per ricondurle a casa?

That thou shouldest take it to the bound thereof, and that thou shouldest know the paths to the house thereof?

21 L o sai di sicuro! Perché tu eri allora già nato, e il numero dei tuoi giorni è grande!

Knowest thou it, because thou wast then born? or because the number of thy days is great?

22 S ei forse entrato nei depositi della neve? Li hai visti i depositi della grandine,

Hast thou entered into the treasures of the snow? or hast thou seen the treasures of the hail,

23 c he io tengo in serbo per i giorni della sciagura, per il giorno della battaglia e della guerra?

Which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war?

24 P er quali vie si diffonde la luce e si sparge il vento orientale sulla terra?

By what way is the light parted, which scattereth the east wind upon the earth?

25 C hi ha aperto i canali all’acquazzone e segnato la via al lampo dei tuoni,

Who hath divided a watercourse for the overflowing of waters, or a way for the lightning of thunder;

26 p erché la pioggia cada sulla terra inabitata, sul deserto dove non sta nessun uomo,

To cause it to rain on the earth, where no man is; on the wilderness, wherein there is no man;

27 e disseti le solitudini desolate, sicché vi germogli e cresca l’erba?

To satisfy the desolate and waste ground; and to cause the bud of the tender herb to spring forth?

28 H a forse la pioggia un padre? Chi genera le gocce della rugiada?

Hath the rain a father? or who hath begotten the drops of dew?

29 D al seno di chi esce il ghiaccio, e la brina del cielo chi la dà alla luce?

Out of whose womb came the ice? and the hoary frost of heaven, who hath gendered it?

30 L e acque, divenute come pietra, si nascondono, e la superficie dell’abisso si congela.

The waters are hid as with a stone, and the face of the deep is frozen.

31 P uoi tu stringere i legami delle Pleiadi, o potresti sciogliere le catene di Orione?

Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion?

32 P uoi tu, a suo tempo, far apparire le costellazioni e guidare l’Orsa maggiore insieme ai suoi piccini?

Canst thou bring forth Mazzaroth in his season? or canst thou guide Arcturus with his sons?

33 C onosci le leggi del cielo? Regoli il suo dominio sulla terra?

Knowest thou the ordinances of heaven? canst thou set the dominion thereof in the earth?

34 P uoi alzare la voce fino alle nubi e fare in modo che piogge abbondanti ti ricoprano?

Canst thou lift up thy voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover thee?

35 I fulmini partono forse al tuo comando? Ti dicono essi: “Eccoci qua”?

Canst thou send lightnings, that they may go and say unto thee, Here we are?

36 C hi ha messo negli strati delle nubi saggezza, o chi ha dato intelletto alla metèora ?

Who hath put wisdom in the inward parts? or who hath given understanding to the heart?

37 C hi conta con saggezza le nubi? Chi versa gli otri del cielo,

Who can number the clouds in wisdom? or who can stay the bottles of heaven,

38 q uando la polvere stemperata diventa una massa in fusione e le zolle dei campi si saldano fra loro? Dio si prende cura degli animali

When the dust groweth into hardness, and the clods cleave fast together?

39 « Sei tu che cacci la preda per la leonessa, che sazi la fame dei leoncelli,

Wilt thou hunt the prey for the lion? or fill the appetite of the young lions,

40 q uando si appiattano nelle tane e si mettono in agguato nella macchia?

When they couch in their dens, and abide in the covert to lie in wait?

41 C hi provvede il pasto al corvo quando i suoi piccini gridano a Dio e vanno peregrinando senza cibo?

Who provideth for the raven his food? when his young ones cry unto God, they wander for lack of meat.
