1 S ì, io ho applicato a tutto questo il mio cuore e ho cercato di chiarirlo: che cioè i giusti e i saggi e le loro opere sono nelle mani di Dio; l’uomo non sa neppure se amerà o se odierà; tutto è possibile.

For all this I considered in my heart even to declare all this, that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God: no man knoweth either love or hatred by all that is before them.

2 T utto succede ugualmente a tutti: la medesima sorte attende il giusto e l’empio, il buono e puro e l’impuro, chi offre sacrifici e chi non li offre; tanto è il buono quanto il peccatore, tanto è colui che giura quanto chi teme di giurare.

All things come alike to all: there is one event to the righteous, and to the wicked; to the good and to the clean, and to the unclean; to him that sacrificeth, and to him that sacrificeth not: as is the good, so is the sinner; and he that sweareth, as he that feareth an oath.

3 Q uesto è un male fra tutto quello che si fa sotto il sole: che tutti abbiano una medesima sorte. Così il cuore dei figli degli uomini è pieno di malvagità e hanno la follia nel cuore mentre vivono; poi se ne vanno ai morti.

This is an evil among all things that are done under the sun, that there is one event unto all: yea, also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead.

4 P er chi è associato a tutti gli altri viventi c’è speranza; perché un cane vivo vale più di un leone morto.

For to him that is joined to all the living there is hope: for a living dog is better than a dead lion.

5 I nfatti i viventi sanno che moriranno; ma i morti non sanno nulla e per essi non c’è più salario, poiché la loro memoria è dimenticata.

For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.

6 I l loro amore come il loro odio e la loro invidia sono da lungo tempo periti, ed essi non hanno più né avranno mai alcuna parte in tutto quello che si fa sotto il sole.

Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun.

7 V a’, mangia il tuo pane con gioia e bevi il tuo vino con cuore allegro, perché Dio ha già gradito le tue opere.

Go thy way, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry heart; for God now accepteth thy works.

8 S iano le tue vesti bianche in ogni tempo, e l’olio non manchi mai sul tuo capo.

Let thy garments be always white; and let thy head lack no ointment.

9 G odi la vita con la moglie che ami, per tutti i giorni della vita della tua vanità, che Dio ti ha data sotto il sole per tutto il tempo della tua vanità; poiché questa è la tua parte nella vita, in mezzo a tutta la fatica che sostieni sotto il sole.

Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which he hath given thee under the sun, all the days of thy vanity: for that is thy portion in this life, and in thy labour which thou takest under the sun.

10 T utto quello che la tua mano trova da fare, fallo con tutte le tue forze; poiché nel soggiorno dei morti dove vai non c’è più né lavoro, né pensiero, né scienza, né saggezza.

Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.

11 I o mi sono rimesso a considerare che, sotto il sole, per correre non basta essere agili, né basta per combattere essere valorosi, né essere saggi per avere del pane, né essere intelligenti per avere delle ricchezze, né essere abili per ottenere favore; poiché tutti dipendono dal tempo e dalle circostanze.

I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.

12 L ’uomo infatti non conosce la sua ora; come i pesci che sono presi nella rete fatale e come gli uccelli che sono colti nel laccio, così i figli degli uomini sono presi nel laccio al tempo dell’avversità, quando essa piomba su di loro improvvisa.

For man also knoweth not his time: as the fishes that are taken in an evil net, and as the birds that are caught in the snare; so are the sons of men snared in an evil time, when it falleth suddenly upon them.

13 H o visto sotto il sole anche questo esempio di saggezza che mi è parsa grande.

This wisdom have I seen also under the sun, and it seemed great unto me:

14 C ’era una piccola città, con dentro pochi uomini; un gran re le marciò contro, la cinse d’assedio e le costruì contro dei grandi bastioni.

There was a little city, and few men within it; and there came a great king against it, and besieged it, and built great bulwarks against it:

15 O ra in essa si trovò un uomo povero e saggio che con la sua saggezza salvò la città. Eppure nessuno conservò ricordo di quell’uomo povero.

Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man.

16 A llora io dissi: «La saggezza vale più della forza»; ma la saggezza del povero è disprezzata e le sue parole non sono ascoltate.

Then said I, Wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless the poor man's wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard.

17 L e parole dei saggi ascoltate nella tranquillità valgono più delle grida di chi domina fra gli stolti.

The words of wise men are heard in quiet more than the cry of him that ruleth among fools.

18 L a saggezza vale più degli strumenti di guerra; ma un solo peccatore distrugge un gran bene.

Wisdom is better than weapons of war: but one sinner destroyeth much good.
