1 E ntonces respondió Job:

Then Job answered,

2 “ En verdad que ustedes son el pueblo, Y con ustedes morirá la sabiduría.

No doubt you are the people, and wisdom will die with you!

3 P ero yo también tengo inteligencia como ustedes; No soy inferior a ustedes. ¿Y quién no sabe esto ?

But I have understanding as well as you; I am not inferior to you. Who does not know such things as these ?

4 S oy motivo de burla para mis amigos, Yo, el que clamaba a Dios, y El le respondía. Motivo de burla es el justo e intachable.

I am become one who is a laughingstock to his friend; I, one whom God answered when he called upon Him—a just, upright (blameless) man—laughed to scorn!

5 E l que está en holgura desprecia la calamidad, Como cosa preparada para aquéllos cuyos pies resbalan.

In the thought of him who is at ease there is contempt for misfortune—but it is ready for those whose feet slip.

6 L as tiendas de los destructores prosperan, Y los que provocan a Dios están seguros, A quienes Dios ha dado el poder que tienen.

The dwellings of robbers prosper; those who provoke God are secure; God supplies them abundantly.

7 A hora pregunta a los animales, y que ellos te instruyan, Y a las aves de los cielos, y que ellas te informen.

For ask now the animals, and they will teach you; ask the birds of the air, and they will tell you;

8 O habla a la tierra, y que ella te instruya, Y que los peces del mar te lo declaren.

Or speak to the earth, and it will teach you; and the fish of the sea will declare to you.

9 ¿ Quién entre todos ellos no sabe Que la mano del Señor ha hecho esto,

Who not to recognize in all these that it is God’s hand which does it ?

10 Q ue en Su mano está la vida de todo ser viviente, Y el aliento de todo ser humano ?

In His hand is the life of every living thing and the breath of all mankind.

11 ¿ No distingue el oído las palabras Como el paladar prueba la comida ?

Is it not the task of the ear to discriminate between words, just as the mouth distinguishes food?

12 E n los ancianos está la sabiduría, Y en largura de días el entendimiento.

With the aged is wisdom, and with length of days comes understanding.

13 E n El están la sabiduría y el poder, Y el consejo y el entendimiento son Suyos.

But with are wisdom and might; He has counsel and understanding.

14 E l derriba, y no se puede reedificar; Aprisiona a un hombre, y no puede ser liberado.

Behold, He tears down, and it cannot be built again; He shuts a man in, and none can open.

15 E l retiene las aguas, y todo se seca, Y las envía, e inundan la tierra.

He withholds the waters, and the land dries up; again, He sends forth, and they overwhelm the land or transform it.

16 E n El están la fuerza y la prudencia, Suyos son el engañado y el engañador.

With Him are might and wisdom; the deceived and the deceiver are His.

17 E l hace que los consejeros anden descalzos, Y hace necios a los jueces.

He leads counselors away stripped and barefoot and makes the judges fools.

18 R ompe las cadenas de los reyes Y ata sus cinturas con cuerda.

He looses the fetters by kings and has waistcloth bound about their loins.

19 H ace que los sacerdotes anden descalzos Y derriba a los que están seguros.

He leads away priests as spoil, and men firmly seated He overturns.

20 P riva del habla a los hombres de confianza Y quita a los ancianos el discernimiento.

He deprives of speech those who are trusted and takes away the discernment and discretion of the aged.

21 V ierte desprecio sobre los nobles Y afloja el cinto de los fuertes.

He pours contempt on princes and loosens the belt of the strong.

22 E l revela los misterios de las tinieblas Y saca a la luz la densa oscuridad.

He uncovers deep things out of darkness and brings into light black gloom and the shadow of death.

23 E ngrandece las naciones, y las destruye; Ensancha las naciones, y las dispersa.

He makes nations great, and He destroys them; He enlarges nations, and leads them.

24 P riva de inteligencia a los jefes de la gente de la tierra Y los hace vagar por un desierto sin camino;

He takes away understanding from the leaders of the people of the land and of the earth, and causes them to wander in a wilderness where there is no path.

25 A ndan a tientas en tinieblas, sin luz, Y los hace tambalearse como borrachos.

They grope in the dark without light, and He makes them to stagger and wander like a drunken man.
