1 V ả, cả thiên hạ đều có một giọng nói và một thứ tiếng.

2 N hưng khi ở Đông phương dời đi, người ta gặp một đồng bằng trong xứ Si-nê -a, rồi ở tại đó.

They said to one another, “Come, let us make blocks and burn them until they are hard.” They used blocks for stone, and tar to hold them together.

4 L ại nói rằng: Nào! chúng ta hãy xây một cái thành và dựng lên một cái tháp, chót cao đến tận trời; ta hãy lo làm cho rạng danh, e khi phải tản lạc khắp trên mặt đất.

Then they said, “Come, let us build a city for ourselves, with a tower that touches the heavens. Let us make a name for ourselves, or else we may be sent everywhere over the whole earth.”

5 Đ ức Giê-hô-va bèn ngự xuống đặng xem cái thành và tháp của con cái loài người xây nên.

Then the Lord came down to see the city and the tower that the sons of men had built.

6 Đ ức Giê-hô-va phán rằng: Nầy, chỉ có một thứ dân, cùng đồng một thứ tiếng; và kia kìa công việc chúng nó đương khởi làm; bây giờ chẳng còn chi ngăn chúng nó làm các điều đã quyết định được.

And the Lord said, “See, they are one people, and they all have the same language. This is only the beginning of what they will do. Now all they plan to do will be possible for them.

7 T hôi! chúng ta, hãy xuống, làm lộn xộn tiếng nói của chúng nó, cho họ nghe không được tiếng nói của người nầy với người kia.

Come, let Us go down and mix up their language so they will not understand what each other says.”

8 R ồi, từ đó Đức Giê-hô-va làm cho loài người tản ra khắp trên mặt đất, và họ thôi công việc xây cất thành.

So the Lord sent them everywhere over the whole earth. And they stopped building the city.

9 B ởi cớ đó đặt tên thành là Ba-bên, vì nơi đó Đức Giê-hô-va làm lộn xộn tiếng nói của cả thế gian, và từ đây Ngài làm cho loài người tản ra khắp trên mặt đất.

10 Đ ây là dòng dõi của Sem: Cách hai năm, sau cơn nước lụt, Sem được một trăm tuổi, sanh A-bác-sát.

These are the children of Shem. When Shem had lived 100 years, he became the father of Arpachshad, two years after the flood.

11 S au khi Sem sanh A-bác-sát rồi, còn sống được năm trăm năm, sanh con trai con gái.

Shem lived 500 years after the birth of Arpachshad. He had other sons and daughters.

12 A -bác-sát được ba mươi lăm tuổi, sanh Sê-lách.

When Arpachshad had lived thirty-five years, he became the father of Shelah.

13 S au khi A-bác-sát sanh Sê-lách rồi, còn sống được bốn trăm ba năm, sanh con trai con gái.

Arpachshad lived 403 years after the birth of Shelah. He had other sons and daughters.

14 S ê-lách được ba mươi tuổi, sanh Hê-be.

When Shelah had lived thirty years, he became the father of Eber.

15 S au khi Sê-lách sanh Hê-be rồi, còn sống được bốn trăm ba năm, sanh con trai con gái.

Shelah lived 403 years after the birth of Eber. He had other sons and daughters.

16 H ê-be được ba mươi bốn tuổi, sanh Bê-léc.

When Eber had lived thirty-four years, he became the father of Peleg.

17 S au khi Hê-be sanh Bê-léc rồi, còn sống được bốn trăm ba mươi năm, sanh con trai con gái.

Eber lived 430 years after the birth of Peleg. He had other sons and daughters.

18 B ê-léc được ba mươi tuổi, sanh Rê-hu

When Peleg had lived thirty years, he became the father of Reu.

19 S au khi Bê-léc sanh Rê-hu rồi, còn sống được hai trăm chín năm, sanh con trai con gái.

Peleg lived 209 years after the birth of Reu. He had other sons and daughters.

20 R ê-hu được ba mươi hai tuổi, sanh Sê-rúc.

When Reu had lived thirty-two years, he became the father of Serug.

21 S au khi Rê-hu sanh Sê-rúc rồi, còn sống được hai trăm bảy năm, sanh con trai con gái.

Reu lived 207 years after the birth of Serug. He had other sons and daughters.

22 S ê-rúc được ba mươi tuổi, sanh Na-cô.

When Serug had lived thirty years, he became the father of Nahor.

23 S au khi Sê-rúc sanh Na-cô rồi, còn sống được hai trăm năm, sanh con trai con gái.

Serug lived 200 years after the birth of Nahor. He had other sons and daughters.

24 N a-cô được hai mươi chín tuổi, sanh Tha-rê.

When Nahor had lived twenty-nine years, he became the father of Terah.

25 S au khi Na-cô sanh Tha-rê rồi, còn sống được một trăm mười chín năm, sanh con trai con gái.

Nahor lived 119 years after the birth of Terah. He had other sons and daughters.

26 C òn Tha-rê được bảy mươi tuổi, sanh Áp-ram, Na-cô và Ha-ran.

When Terah had lived seventy years, he became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran.

27 Đ ây là dòng dõi của Tha-rê: Tha-rê sanh Áp-ram, Na-cô và Ha-ran; Ha-ran sanh Lót.

Now these are the children of Terah. Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran. And Haran became the father of Lot.

28 H a-ran qua đời tại quê hương mình, tức là U-ru, thuộc về xứ Canh-đê, khi cha người là Tha-rê hãy còn sống.

Haran died with his father Terah beside him in the land of his birth, Ur of the Chaldeans.

29 Á p-ram và Na-cô cưới vợ; vợ Áp-ram tên là Sa-rai, còn vợ Na-cô tên là Minh-ca; Minh-ca và Dích-ca tức là con gái của Ha-ran.

Abram and Nahor both married. The name of Abram’s wife was Sarai. The name of Nahor’s wife was Milcah, the daughter of Haran. Haran was the father of Milcah and Iscah.

30 V ả, Sa-rai son sẻ, nên người không có con.

But Sarai could not give birth. She had no child.

31 T ha-rê dẫn Áp-ram, con trai mình, Lót, con trai Ha-ran, cháu mình, và Sa-rai, vợ Áp-ram, tức dâu mình, đồng ra khỏi U-rơ, thuộc về xứ Canh-đê, đặng qua xứ Ca-na-an. Khi đến Cha-ran thì lập gia cư tại đó.

Terah took his son Abram, and his grandson Lot, the son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, the wife of his son Abram and they went together from Ur of the Chaldeans to the land of Canaan. But when they went as far as Haran, they made their home there.

32 T ha-rê hưởng thọ được hai trăm năm tuổi, rồi qua đời tại Cha-ran.

Terah lived 205 years, and he died in Haran.
