1 T a xây lại, xem xét mọi sự hà hiếp làm ra ở dưới mặt trời; kìa, nước mắt của kẻ bị hà hiếp, song không ai an ủi họ! Kẻ hà hiếp có quyền phép, song không ai an ủi cho kẻ bị hà hiếp!

Then I saw all the bad powers that were ruling under the sun. I saw the tears of the people who were suffering under these powers, with no one to comfort them. Those who made it hard for them had the power. But the people had no one to comfort them.

2 V ậy, ta khen những kẻ chết đã lâu rồi là sướng hơn kẻ còn sống;

So I thought that those who are already dead are better off than those who are still living.

3 c òn kẻ chưa được sanh ra, chưa thấy những gian ác làm ra dưới mặt trời, ta cho là có phước hơn hai đằng kia.

But better than both is the one who has never been, who has never seen the wrong that is done under the sun.

4 T a cũng thấy mọi công lao và mọi nghề khéo là điều gây cho người nầy kẻ khác ganh ghét nhau. Điều đó cũng là sự hư không, theo luồng gió thổi.

I have seen that all the work done is because a man wants what his neighbor has. This also is for nothing, like trying to catch the wind.

5 K ẻ ngu muội khoanh tay, ăn lấy thịt mình.

The fool folds his hands and has no food to eat.

6 T hà đầy một lòng bàn tay mà bình an, hơn là đầy cả hai mà bị lao khổ, theo luồng gió thổi.

One hand full of rest is better than two hands full of work and trying to catch the wind.

7 T a bèn xây lại xem thấy sự hư không ở dưới mặt trời:

Then I looked again at what is of no use under the sun.

8 N ầy một người cô độc, chẳng có ai hoặc con trai hay là anh em; dầu vậy, lao khổ nó không thôi, mắt nó không hề chán của cải; nó không hề nghĩ rằng: Vậy ta lao khổ, ta bắt linh hồn nhịn các phước là vì ai? Điều đó cũng là hư không, thật là công việc cực nhọc.

There was a certain man who lived alone. He did not have a son or a brother. Yet he worked all the time. His eyes were never happy with the riches he had, and he never asked, “For whom am I working and why am I keeping myself from happiness?” This also is for nothing. It is work that brings sorrow. 9 H ai người hơn một, vì hai sẽ được công giá tốt về công việc mình.

Two are better than one, because they have good pay for their work.

10 N ếu người này sa ngã, thì người kia sẽ đỡ bạn mình lên; nhưng khốn thay cho kẻ ở một mình mà sa ngã, không có ai đỡ mình lên!

For if one of them falls, the other can help him up. But it is hard for the one who falls when there is no one to lift him up.

11 C ũng vậy, nếu hai người ngủ chung thì ấm; còn một mình thì làm sao ấm được?

And if two lie down together, they keep warm. But how can one be warm alone?

12 L ại nếu kẻ ở một mình bị người khác thắng, thì hai người có thế chống cự nó; một sợi dây đánh ba tao lấy làm khó đứt.

One man is able to have power over him who is alone, but two can stand against him. It is not easy to break a rope made of three strings.

13 M ột kẻ trẻ tuổi nghèo mà khôn hơn một ông vua già cả mà dại, chẳng còn biết nghe lời khuyên can.

A poor and wise boy is better than an old and foolish king who will no longer listen to words of wisdom.

14 V ì kẻ trẻ ra khỏi ngục khám đặng làm vua, dầu sanh ra nghèo trong nước mình.

A man can come out of prison to become king, even if he was born poor in his nation.

15 T a thấy mọi người sống đi đi lại lại dưới mặt trời, đều theo kẻ trẻ ấy, là người kế vị cho vua kia.

I have seen all the living under the sun gather to the side of the boy who becomes king in his place.

16 D ân phục dưới quyền người thật đông vô số; dầu vậy, những kẻ đến sau sẽ chẳng vui thích về người. Điều đó cũng là sự hư không, theo luồng gió thổi.

There was no end to all the people. He ruled over all of them. Yet those who come later will not be happy with him. For this also is for nothing, like trying to catch the wind.
