1 A nd there was a great cry of the people and of their wives against their brethren the Jews.

В народе, среди мужчин и их жен, поднялся сильный ропот на своих братьев-иудеев.

2 F or there were that said, We, our sons, and our daughters, are many: therefore we take up corn for them, that we may eat, and live.

Некоторые говорили: – Нас, наших сыновей и наших дочерей много, и чтобы кормиться и жить, нам нужно зерно.

3 S ome also there were that said, We have mortgaged our lands, vineyards, and houses, that we might buy corn, because of the dearth.

Другие говорили: – Нам приходится закладывать свои поля, виноградники и дома, чтобы достать зерна во время голода.

4 T here were also that said, We have borrowed money for the king’s tribute, and that upon our lands and vineyards.

А были и такие, которые говорили: – Нам приходится занимать деньги, чтобы платить царю налог на наши поля и виноградники.

5 Y et now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children: and, lo, we bring into bondage our sons and our daughters to be servants, and some of our daughters are brought unto bondage already: neither is it in our power to redeem them; for other men have our lands and vineyards.

Мы из той же плоти, что и наши соплеменники, и наши сыновья такие же, как у них, но нам приходится отдавать своих сыновей и дочерей в рабство. Некоторые из наших дочерей уже порабощены, но мы бессильны, потому что наши поля и виноградники принадлежат другим.

6 A nd I was very angry when I heard their cry and these words.

Услышав их ропот и эти жалобы, я очень рассердился.

7 T hen I consulted with myself, and I rebuked the nobles, and the rulers, and said unto them, Ye exact usury, every one of his brother. And I set a great assembly against them.

Обдумав, я обвинил знать и приближенных. Я сказал им: – Вы берете проценты со своих братьев! Из-за них я созвал большое собрание

8 A nd I said unto them, We after our ability have redeemed our brethren the Jews, which were sold unto the heathen; and will ye even sell your brethren? or shall they be sold unto us? Then held they their peace, and found nothing to answer.

и сказал: – Всеми силами мы выкупали наших братьев-иудеев, которые были проданы язычникам. А теперь вы продаете своих же братьев, которых нам приходится выкупать! Они молчали, потому что им нечего было сказать.

9 A lso I said, It is not good that ye do: ought ye not to walk in the fear of our God because of the reproach of the heathen our enemies?

Тогда я сказал: – То, что вы делаете, – нехорошо. Разве вы не должны ходить в страхе нашего Бога, чтобы избежать порицания наших врагов-язычников?

10 I likewise, and my brethren, and my servants, might exact of them money and corn: I pray you, let us leave off this usury.

Я, мои братья и слуги также даем в долг народу деньги и зерно. Давайте прекратим брать проценты!

11 R estore, I pray you, to them, even this day, their lands, their vineyards, their oliveyards, and their houses, also the hundredth part of the money, and of the corn, the wine, and the oil, that ye exact of them.

Немедленно верните им их поля, виноградники, масличные рощи и дома, а также проценты, которые вы им назначили, – сотую часть денег, зерна, молодого вина и масла.

12 T hen said they, We will restore them, and will require nothing of them; so will we do as thou sayest. Then I called the priests, and took an oath of them, that they should do according to this promise.

– Мы вернем это, – сказали они, – и не потребуем больше от них ничего. Мы сделаем, как ты говоришь. Я призвал священников и заставил знать и приближенных дать клятву в том, что они выполнят обещанное.

13 A lso I shook my lap, and said, So God shake out every man from his house, and from his labour, that performeth not this promise, even thus be he shaken out, and emptied. And all the congregation said, Amen, and praised the Lord. And the people did according to this promise.

Еще я вытряхнул свою одежду и сказал: – Так пусть же Бог вытряхнет всякого человека, который не сдержит этого обещания, из его дома и добра. Так пусть же этот человек будет вытряхнут и опустошен! И все общество сказало: «Аминь!», – и прославило Бога. И народ сделал так, как и обещал. Неемия подает пример

14 M oreover from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year even unto the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that is, twelve years, I and my brethren have not eaten the bread of the governor.

Более того, с двадцатого года правления царя Артаксеркса, когда я был назначен наместником в земле иудейской, до его тридцать второго года правления – двенадцать лет – ни я, ни братья мои не ели пищи, предназначенной для наместника.

15 B ut the former governors that had been before me were chargeable unto the people, and had taken of them bread and wine, beside forty shekels of silver; yea, even their servants bare rule over the people: but so did not I, because of the fear of God.

Прежние наместники, которые были до меня, возложили на народ тяжкое бремя, и брали у них сорок шекелей серебра, помимо пищи и вина. Даже их слуги помыкали народом. Но я, почитая Бога, так не поступал.

16 Y ea, also I continued in the work of this wall, neither bought we any land: and all my servants were gathered thither unto the work.

Напротив, я посвятил себя работам по восстановлению стены. Все мои слуги были собраны туда для работ; мы не покупали земель.

17 M oreover there were at my table an hundred and fifty of the Jews and rulers, beside those that came unto us from among the heathen that are about us.

Более того, за моим столом ели сто пятьдесят иудеев и приближенных, не считая тех, кто приходил к нам из окрестных народов.

18 N ow that which was prepared for me daily was one ox and six choice sheep; also fowls were prepared for me, and once in ten days store of all sorts of wine: yet for all this required not I the bread of the governor, because the bondage was heavy upon this people.

Каждый день у меня готовили одного быка, шесть отборных овец и птицу, а каждые десять дней – в изобилии всякого рода вино. Несмотря на это, я никогда не требовал пищи, предназначенной для наместника, потому что и без этого народу приходилось тяжело.

19 T hink upon me, my God, for good, according to all that I have done for this people.

Вспомни мне во благо, Боже мой, все, что я сделал для этого народа.
