Knowest thou the time when the wild goats of the rock bring forth? dost thou mark the calving of the hinds?

2 P odes contar os meses que cumprem, ou sabes o tempo do seu parto?

Dost thou number the months that they fulfil? and knowest thou the time when they bring forth?

3 E ncurvam-se, dão ã luz as suas crias, lançam de si a sua prole.

They bow themselves, they give birth to their young ones, they cast out their pains;

4 S eus filhos enrijam, crescem no campo livre; saem, e não tornam para elas:

Their young ones become strong, they grow up in the open field, they go forth, and return not unto them.

5 Q uem despediu livre o jumento montês, e quem soltou as prisões ao asno veloz,

Who hath sent out the wild ass free? and who hath loosed the bands of the onager,

6 a o qual dei o ermo por casa, e a terra salgada por morada?

Whose house I made the wilderness, and the salt plain his dwellings?

7 E le despreza o tumulto da cidade; não obedece os gritos do condutor.

He laugheth at the tumult of the city, and heareth not the shouts of the driver;

8 O circuito das montanhas é o seu pasto, e anda buscando tudo o que está verde.

The range of the mountains is his pasture, and he searcheth after every green thing.

9 Q uererá o boi selvagem servir-te? ou ficará junto ã tua manjedoura?

Will the buffalo be willing to serve thee, or will he lodge by thy crib?

10 P odes amarrar o boi selvagem ao arado com uma corda, ou esterroará ele após ti os vales?

Canst thou bind the buffalo with his cord in the furrow? or will he harrow the valleys after thee?

11 O u confiarás nele, por ser grande a sua força, ou deixarás a seu cargo o teu trabalho?

Wilt thou put confidence in him, because his strength is great? and wilt thou leave thy labour to him?

12 F iarás dele que te torne o que semeaste e o recolha ã tua eira?

Wilt thou trust him to bring home thy seed, and gather it into thy threshing-floor?

13 M ovem-se alegremente as asas da avestruz; mas é benigno o adorno da sua plumagem?

The wing of the ostrich beats joyously—But is it the stork's pinion and plumage?

14 P ois ela deixa os seus ovos na terra, e os aquenta no pó,

For she leaveth her eggs to the earth, and warmeth them in the dust,

15 e se esquece de que algum pé os pode pisar, ou de que a fera os pode calcar.

And forgetteth that the foot may crush them, or that the beast of the field may trample them.

16 E ndurece-se para com seus filhos, como se não fossem seus; embora se perca o seu trabalho, ela está sem temor;

She is hardened against her young ones, as though they were not hers; her labour is in vain, without her concern.

17 p orque Deus a privou de sabedoria, e não lhe repartiu entendimento.

For +God hath deprived her of wisdom, and hath not furnished her with understanding.

18 Q uando ela se levanta para correr, zomba do cavalo, e do cavaleiro.

What time she lasheth herself on high, she scorneth the horse and his rider.

19 A caso deste força ao cavalo, ou revestiste de força o seu pescoço?

Hast thou given strength to the horse? hast thou clothed his neck with the quivering mane?

20 F izeste-o pular como o gafanhoto? Terrível é o fogoso respirar das suas ventas.

Dost thou make him to leap as a locust? His majestic snorting is terrible.

21 E scarva no vale, e folga na sua força, e sai ao encontro dos armados.

He paweth in the valley, and rejoiceth in strength; he goeth forth to meet the armed host.

22 R i-se do temor, e não se espanta; e não torna atrás por causa da espada.

He laugheth at fear, and is not affrighted; neither turneth he back from before the sword.

23 S obre ele rangem a aljava, a lança cintilante e o dardo.

The quiver rattleth upon him, the glittering spear and the javelin.

24 T remendo e enfurecido devora a terra, e não se contém ao som da trombeta.

He swalloweth the ground with fierceness and rage, and cannot contain himself at the sound of the trumpet:

25 T oda vez que soa a trombeta, diz: Eia! E de longe cheira a guerra, e o trovão dos capitães e os gritos.

At the noise of the trumpets he saith, Aha! and he smelleth the battle afar off, the thunder of the captains, and the shouting.

26 É pelo teu entendimento que se eleva o gavião, e estende as suas asas para o sul?

Doth the hawk fly by thine intelligence, stretch his wings toward the south?

27 O u se remonta a águia ao teu mandado, e põe no alto o seu ninho?

Doth the eagle mount up at thy command, and make his nest on high?

28 M ora nas penhas e ali tem a sua pousada, no cume das penhas, no lugar seguro.

He inhabiteth the rock and maketh his dwelling on the point of the cliff, and the fastness:

29 D ali descobre a presa; seus olhos a avistam de longe.

From thence he spieth out the prey, his eyes look into the distance;

30 S eus filhos chupam o sangue; e onde há mortos, ela aí está.

And his young ones suck up blood; and where the slain are, there is he.
