1 N o tengas envidia de los hombres malos ni desees juntarte con ellos,

Be not thou envious against evil men, neither desire to be with them.

2 p orque su corazón trama violencias e iniquidad hablan sus labios. -20-

For their heart studieth destruction, and their lips talk of mischief.

3 C on sabiduría se edifica la casa, con prudencia se afirma

Through wisdom is an house builded; and by understanding it is established:

4 y con ciencia se llenan las cámaras de todo bien preciado y agradable. -21-

And by knowledge shall the chambers be filled with all precious and pleasant riches.

5 E l hombre sabio es fuerte, y de pujante vigor el que tiene ciencia.

A wise man is strong; yea, a man of knowledge increaseth strength.

6 P orque con ingenio harás la guerra, y en los muchos consejeros está la victoria. -22-

For by wise counsel thou shalt make thy war: and in multitude of counsellors there is safety.

7 A lta está para el insensato la sabiduría; en la puerta no abrirá él su boca. -23-

Wisdom is too high for a fool: he openeth not his mouth in the gate.

8 A l que piensa hacer el mal lo llaman «hombre de malos pensamientos».

He that deviseth to do evil shall be called a mischievous person.

9 E l pensamiento del necio es pecado, y abominable para los hombres el escarnecedor. -24-

The thought of foolishness is sin: and the scorner is an abomination to men.

10 S i flaqueas en día de adversidad, tu fuerza quedará reducida. -25-

If thou faint in the day of adversity, thy strength is small.

11 L ibra a los que son llevados a la muerte, salva a los que tienen su vida en peligro.

If thou forbear to deliver them that are drawn unto death, and those that are ready to be slain;

12 P orque si dices: «Lo cierto es que no lo supimos», ¿acaso no lo considerará el que pesa los corazones? El que mira por tu alma, él lo conocerá, y él pagará al hombre según sus obras. -26-

If thou sayest, Behold, we knew it not; doth not he that pondereth the heart consider it? and he that keepeth thy soul, doth not he know it? and shall not he render to every man according to his works?

13 C ome, hijo mío, de la miel, porque es buena; el panal es dulce a tu paladar.

My son, eat thou honey, because it is good; and the honeycomb, which is sweet to thy taste:

14 A sí será para ti el conocimiento de la sabiduría: si la hallas tendrás recompensa y al fin tu esperanza no será frustrada. -27-

So shall the knowledge of wisdom be unto thy soul: when thou hast found it, then there shall be a reward, and thy expectation shall not be cut off.

15 T ú, malvado, no aceches la morada del justo, no saquees el lugar de su descanso;

Lay not wait, O wicked man, against the dwelling of the righteous; spoil not his resting place:

16 p orque aunque siete veces caiga el justo, volverá a levantarse, pero los malvados caerán en el mal. -28-

For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief.

17 N o te regocijes cuando caiga tu enemigo, ni cuando él tropiece se alegre tu corazón,

Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth, and let not thine heart be glad when he stumbleth:

18 n o sea que Jehová lo vea y le desagrade, y aparte de sobre él su enojo. -29-

Lest the Lord see it, and it displease him, and he turn away his wrath from him.

19 N o te juntes con los malignos ni envidies a los malvados,

Fret not thyself because of evil men, neither be thou envious at the wicked:

20 p orque para el malo no habrá buen fin: ¡la lámpara de los malvados se apagará! -30-

For there shall be no reward to the evil man; the candle of the wicked shall be put out.

21 T eme a Jehová, hijo mío, y al rey, y no te juntes con los veleidosos;

My son, fear thou the Lord and the king: and meddle not with them that are given to change:

22 p orque su desgracia llegará de repente; y el quebranto que viene de ambos, ¿quién puede saberlo? CUARTA COLECCIÓN://DICHOS DE LOS SABIOS

For their calamity shall rise suddenly; and who knoweth the ruin of them both?

23 T ambién éstos son dichos de los sabios: Hacer distinción de personas en el juicio no es bueno.

These things also belong to the wise. It is not good to have respect of persons in judgment.

24 A quien diga al malo: «Tú eres justo», los pueblos lo maldecirán y lo detestarán las naciones;

He that saith unto the wicked, Thou are righteous; him shall the people curse, nations shall abhor him:

25 p ero quienes lo reprendan tendrán felicidad y sobre ellos vendrá gran bendición.

But to them that rebuke him shall be delight, and a good blessing shall come upon them.

26 ¡ Besados sean los labios del que responde con palabras correctas!

Every man shall kiss his lips that giveth a right answer.

27 P repara tus labores fuera, dispónlas en tus campos y edifica después tu casa.

Prepare thy work without, and make it fit for thyself in the field; and afterwards build thine house.

28 N o seas sin causa testigo contra tu prójimo ni digas falsedades con tus labios.

Be not a witness against thy neighbour without cause; and deceive not with thy lips.

29 N o digas: «Haré con él como él hizo conmigo; pagaré a ese hombre según merece su obra.»

Say not, I will do so to him as he hath done to me: I will render to the man according to his work.

30 P asé junto al campo del hombre perezoso, junto a la viña del hombre falto de entendimiento;

I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding;

31 y vi que por toda ella habían crecido los espinos, ortigas habían cubierto la tierra y la cerca de piedra ya estaba derribada.

And, lo, it was all grown over with thorns, and nettles had covered the face thereof, and the stone wall thereof was broken down.

32 M iré, y lo medité en mi corazón; lo vi, y aprendí la lección:

Then I saw, and considered it well: I looked upon it, and received instruction.

33 U n poco de sueño, dormitar otro poco y otro poco descansar mano sobre mano:

Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep:

34 a sí te llegará la miseria como un vagabundo, la pobreza como un hombre armado.

So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth; and thy want as an armed man.
