1 C uando oyeron estas cosas todos los reyes que estaban a este lado del Jordán, tanto en las montañas como en los llanos, y en toda la costa del Mar Grande hasta el Líbano: heteos, amorreos, cananeos, ferezeos, heveos y jebuseos,

And it came to pass, when all the kings which were on this side Jordan, in the hills, and in the valleys, and in all the coasts of the great sea over against Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard thereof;

2 s e concertaron para pelear contra Josué e Israel.

That they gathered themselves together, to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord.

3 P ero cuando los habitantes de Gabaón oyeron lo que Josué había hecho con Jericó y Hai,

And when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done unto Jericho and to Ai,

4 r ecurrieron a la astucia, pues fueron y se fingieron embajadores, tomaron sacos viejos sobre sus asnos y odres viejos de vino, rotos y remendados;

They did work wilily, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine bottles, old, and rent, and bound up;

5 s e pusieron zapatos viejos y recosidos, y vestidos viejos. Todo el pan que traían para el camino era seco y mohoso.

And old shoes and clouted upon their feet, and old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry and mouldy.

6 A l llegar a Josué al campamento en Gilgal, les dijeron a él y a los de Israel: —Nosotros venimos de una tierra muy lejana; haced, pues, ahora una alianza con nosotros.

And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said unto him, and to the men of Israel, We be come from a far country: now therefore make ye a league with us.

7 L os de Israel respondieron a los heveos: —Si habitáis en medio de nosotros, ¿cómo, pues, podremos hacer alianza con vosotros?

And the men of Israel said unto the Hivites, Peradventure ye dwell among us; and how shall we make a league with you?

8 E llos respondieron a Josué: —Nosotros somos tus siervos. —¿Quiénes sois vosotros, y de dónde venís? —les dijo Josué.

And they said unto Joshua, We are thy servants. And Joshua said unto them, Who are ye? and from whence come ye?

9 E llos respondieron: —Tus siervos han venido de tierra muy lejana a causa del nombre de Jehová, tu Dios, pues hemos oído de su fama, de todo lo que hizo en Egipto

And they said unto him, From a very far country thy servants are come because of the name of the Lord thy God: for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt,

10 y todo lo que hizo con los dos reyes de los amorreos que estaban al otro lado del Jordán: Sehón, rey de Hesbón, y Og, rey de Basán, que estaba en Astarot.

And all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites, that were beyond Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, which was at Ashtaroth.

11 P or eso nuestros ancianos y todos los habitantes de nuestra tierra nos dijeron: “Tomad en vuestras manos la provisión para el camino, id al encuentro de ellos y decidles: ‘Nosotros somos vuestros siervos; haced ahora alianza con nosotros.’”

Wherefore our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spake to us, saying, Take victuals with you for the journey, and go to meet them, and say unto them, We are your servants: therefore now make ye a league with us.

12 E ste nuestro pan lo tomamos caliente de nuestras casas para el camino el día que salimos para venir a vuestro encuentro, y ahora ya está seco y mohoso.

This our bread we took hot for our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go unto you; but now, behold, it is dry, and it is mouldy:

13 E stos odres de vino también los llenamos nuevos, y ya están rotos. También estos nuestros vestidos y nuestros zapatos están ya viejos a causa de tanto caminar.

And these bottles of wine, which we filled, were new; and, behold, they be rent: and these our garments and our shoes are become old by reason of the very long journey.

14 L os hombres de Israel tomaron de las provisiones de ellos, pero no consultaron a Jehová.

And the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the Lord.

15 J osué hizo la paz con ellos; también celebró con ellos una alianza concediéndoles la vida y los príncipes de la congregación hicieron un juramento.

And Joshua made peace with them, and made a league with them, to let them live: and the princes of the congregation sware unto them.

16 T res días después que hicieron la alianza con ellos, supieron que eran sus vecinos y que habitaban en medio de ellos.

And it came to pass at the end of three days after they had made a league with them, that they heard that they were their neighbours, and that they dwelt among them.

17 L os hijos de Israel salieron, y al tercer día llegaron a sus ciudades, que eran Gabaón, Cafira, Beerot y Quiriat-jearim.

And the children of Israel journeyed, and came unto their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kirjathjearim.

18 N o los mataron los hijos de Israel por cuanto los príncipes de la congregación les habían jurado por Jehová, el Dios de Israel. Toda la congregación empezó a murmurar contra los príncipes;

And the children of Israel smote them not, because the princes of the congregation had sworn unto them by the Lord God of Israel. And all the congregation murmured against the princes.

19 p ero todos los príncipes respondieron a la congregación: —Nosotros les hemos jurado por Jehová, Dios de Israel; por tanto, ahora no los podemos tocar.

But all the princes said unto all the congregation, We have sworn unto them by the Lord God of Israel: now therefore we may not touch them.

20 E sto haremos con ellos: los dejaremos vivir, para que no venga sobre nosotros la ira por causa del juramento que les hemos hecho.

This we will do to them; we will even let them live, lest wrath be upon us, because of the oath which we sware unto them.

21 D e ellos dijeron, pues, los príncipes: «¡Dejadlos vivir!, pero que se constituyan en leñadores y aguadores para toda la congregación», concediéndoles así la vida, según les habían prometido los príncipes.

And the princes said unto them, Let them live; but let them be hewers of wood and drawers of water unto all the congregation; as the princes had promised them.

22 J osué los llamó y les dijo: —¿Por qué nos habéis engañado diciendo: “Habitamos muy lejos de vosotros”, siendo que vivís en medio de nosotros?

And Joshua called for them, and he spake unto them, saying, Wherefore have ye beguiled us, saying, We are very far from you; when ye dwell among us?

23 A hora, pues, malditos sois, y nunca dejará de haber de entre vosotros siervos, ni quienes corten la leña y saquen el agua para la casa de mi Dios.

Now therefore ye are cursed, and there shall none of you be freed from being bondmen, and hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God.

24 E llos respondieron a Josué: —Como fue dado a entender a tus siervos que Jehová, tu Dios, había mandado a Moisés, su siervo, que os había de dar toda la tierra, y que había de destruir a todos los habitantes de la tierra delante de vosotros, por esto temimos mucho por nuestras vidas a causa de vosotros, e hicimos esto.

And they answered Joshua, and said, Because it was certainly told thy servants, how that the Lord thy God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you, therefore we were sore afraid of our lives because of you, and have done this thing.

25 A hora, pues, estamos en tus manos; lo que te parezca bueno y recto hacer de nosotros, hazlo.

And now, behold, we are in thine hand: as it seemeth good and right unto thee to do unto us, do.

26 É l hizo así con ellos, pues los libró de manos de los hijos de Israel y no los mataron.

And so did he unto them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, that they slew them not.

27 A quel día Josué los destinó a ser leñadores y aguadores para la congregación y para el altar de Jehová, en el lugar que Jehová eligiera. Eso son hasta hoy.

And Joshua made them that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation, and for the altar of the Lord, even unto this day, in the place which he should choose.
