1 O yó Jetro, sacerdote de Madián, suegro de Moisés, todas las cosas que Dios había hecho con Moisés y con Israel, su pueblo, y cómo Jehová había sacado a Israel de Egipto.

When Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses' father in law, heard of all that God had done for Moses, and for Israel his people, and that the Lord had brought Israel out of Egypt;

2 E ntonces tomó Jetro, suegro de Moisés, a Séfora, la mujer de Moisés, después que él la envió,

Then Jethro, Moses' father in law, took Zipporah, Moses' wife, after he had sent her back,

3 y a sus dos hijos; el uno se llamaba Gersón, porque dijo: «Forastero he sido en tierra ajena»;

And her two sons; of which the name of the one was Gershom; for he said, I have been an alien in a strange land:

4 y el otro se llamaba Eliezer, porque dijo: «El Dios de mi padre me ayudó y me libró de la espada del faraón.»

And the name of the other was Eliezer; for the God of my father, said he, was mine help, and delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh:

5 C uando Jetro, el suegro de Moisés, llegó con los hijos y la mujer de éste junto al monte de Dios en el desierto, donde estaba acampado Moisés,

And Jethro, Moses' father in law, came with his sons and his wife unto Moses into the wilderness, where he encamped at the mount of God:

6 l e dijo: —Yo, tu suegro Jetro, vengo a ti, con tu mujer y sus dos hijos.

And he said unto Moses, I thy father in law Jethro am come unto thee, and thy wife, and her two sons with her.

7 M oisés salió a recibir a su suegro, se inclinó y lo besó. Se preguntaron el uno al otro cómo estaban, y entraron a la tienda.

And Moses went out to meet his father in law, and did obeisance, and kissed him; and they asked each other of their welfare; and they came into the tent.

8 M oisés contó a su suegro todas las cosas que Jehová había hecho al faraón y a los egipcios por amor de Israel, todo el trabajo que habían pasado en el camino y cómo los había librado Jehová.

And Moses told his father in law all that the Lord had done unto Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel's sake, and all the travail that had come upon them by the way, and how the Lord delivered them.

9 S e alegró Jetro de todo el bien que Jehová había hecho a Israel al haberlo librado de manos de los egipcios.

And Jethro rejoiced for all the goodness which the Lord had done to Israel, whom he had delivered out of the hand of the Egyptians.

10 Y Jetro dijo: —Bendito sea Jehová, que os libró de manos de los egipcios y de manos del faraón. Él ha librado al pueblo de manos de los egipcios.

And Jethro said, Blessed be the Lord, who hath delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of Pharaoh, who hath delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians.

11 A hora conozco que Jehová es más grande que todos los dioses, porque en lo que se ensoberbecieron prevaleció contra ellos.

Now I know that the Lord is greater than all gods: for in the thing wherein they dealt proudly he was above them.

12 L uego tomó Jetro, suegro de Moisés, holocaustos y sacrificios para Dios; y Aarón y todos los ancianos de Israel fueron a comer con el suegro de Moisés delante de Dios. Nombramiento de jueces

And Jethro, Moses' father in law, took a burnt offering and sacrifices for God: and Aaron came, and all the elders of Israel, to eat bread with Moses' father in law before God.

13 A conteció que al día siguiente se sentó Moisés a juzgar al pueblo; y el pueblo estuvo delante de Moisés desde la mañana hasta la tarde.

And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses sat to judge the people: and the people stood by Moses from the morning unto the evening.

14 A l ver el suegro de Moisés todo lo que él hacía por el pueblo, le preguntó: —¿Qué es esto que haces tú con el pueblo? ¿Por qué te sientas tú solo, mientras todo el pueblo permanece delante de ti desde la mañana hasta la tarde?

And when Moses' father in law saw all that he did to the people, he said, What is this thing that thou doest to the people? why sittest thou thyself alone, and all the people stand by thee from morning unto even?

15 M oisés respondió a su suegro: —Porque el pueblo viene a mí para consultar a Dios.

And Moses said unto his father in law, Because the people come unto me to enquire of God:

16 C uando tienen algún pleito, vienen a mí; yo juzgo entre el uno y el otro, y declaro los preceptos de Dios y sus leyes.

When they have a matter, they come unto me; and I judge between one and another, and I do make them know the statutes of God, and his laws.

17 E ntonces el suegro de Moisés le dijo: —No está bien lo que haces.

And Moses' father in law said unto him, The thing that thou doest is not good.

18 D esfallecerás del todo, tú y también este pueblo que está contigo, porque el trabajo es demasiado pesado para ti y no podrás hacerlo tú solo.

Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee: for this thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone.

19 O ye ahora mi voz: yo te aconsejaré y Dios estará contigo. Preséntate tú por el pueblo delante de Dios, y somete tú los asuntos a Dios.

Hearken now unto my voice, I will give thee counsel, and God shall be with thee: Be thou for the people to God-ward, that thou mayest bring the causes unto God:

20 E nséñales los preceptos y las leyes, muéstrales el camino por donde deben andar y lo que han de hacer.

And thou shalt teach them ordinances and laws, and shalt shew them the way wherein they must walk, and the work that they must do.

21 A demás escoge tú de entre todo el pueblo a hombres virtuosos, temerosos de Dios, hombres veraces, que aborrezcan la avaricia, y ponlos sobre el pueblo como jefes de mil, de cien, de cincuenta y de diez.

Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens:

22 E llos juzgarán al pueblo en todo tiempo; todo asunto grave lo traerán a ti, y ellos juzgarán todo asunto pequeño. Así se aliviará tu carga, pues ellos la llevarán contigo.

And let them judge the people at all seasons: and it shall be, that every great matter they shall bring unto thee, but every small matter they shall judge: so shall it be easier for thyself, and they shall bear the burden with thee.

23 S i esto haces, y Dios te lo manda, tú podrás sostenerte, y también todo este pueblo irá en paz a su lugar.

If thou shalt do this thing, and God command thee so, then thou shalt be able to endure, and all this people shall also go to their place in peace.

24 O yó Moisés la voz de su suegro, e hizo todo lo que él le dijo.

So Moses hearkened to the voice of his father in law, and did all that he had said.

25 E scogió Moisés hombres de virtud de entre todo Israel, y los puso sobre el pueblo como jefes sobre mil, sobre cien, sobre cincuenta y sobre diez,

And Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.

26 l os cuales juzgaban al pueblo en todo tiempo. Los asuntos difíciles los traían a Moisés, y ellos juzgaban todo asunto pequeño.

And they judged the people at all seasons: the hard causes they brought unto Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves.

27 L uego Moisés despidió a su suegro, y éste se fue a su tierra.

And Moses let his father in law depart; and he went his way into his own land.
