1 S e levantó Satanás contra Israel e incitó a David a que hiciera censo del pueblo.

And Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel.

2 Y dijo David a Joab y a los príncipes del pueblo: —Id, haced censo de Israel desde Beerseba hasta Dan, e informadme sobre el número de ellos para que yo lo sepa.

And David said to Joab and to the rulers of the people, Go, number Israel from Beersheba even to Dan; and bring the number of them to me, that I may know it.

3 R espondió Joab: —¡Que Jehová añada a su pueblo cien veces más de lo que es, rey, señor mío! ¿Acaso no son todos ellos siervos de mi señor? ¿Para qué procura mi señor esto, que traerá pecado sobre Israel?

And Joab answered, The Lord make his people an hundred times so many more as they be: but, my lord the king, are they not all my lord's servants? why then doth my lord require this thing? why will he be a cause of trespass to Israel?

4 P ero la orden del rey pudo más que Joab. Salió, por tanto, Joab y recorrió todo Israel; entonces volvió a Jerusalén y dio cuenta a David de las cifras del pueblo:

Nevertheless the king's word prevailed against Joab. Wherefore Joab departed, and went throughout all Israel, and came to Jerusalem.

5 h abía en todo Israel un millón cien mil que sacaban espada, y en Judá cuatrocientos setenta mil hombres que sacaban espada.

And Joab gave the sum of the number of the people unto David. And all they of Israel were a thousand thousand and an hundred thousand men that drew sword: and Judah was four hundred threescore and ten thousand men that drew sword.

6 E ntre estos no fueron contados los levitas, ni los hijos de Benjamín, porque la orden del rey era abominable a Joab.

But Levi and Benjamin counted he not among them: for the king's word was abominable to Joab.

7 E sto desagradó a Dios, el cual castigó a Israel.

And God was displeased with this thing; therefore he smote Israel.

8 E ntonces dijo David a Dios: —He pecado gravemente al hacer esto; te ruego que quites la maldad de tu siervo, pues he actuado muy locamente.

And David said unto God, I have sinned greatly, because I have done this thing: but now, I beseech thee, do away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly.

9 Y habló Jehová a Gad, vidente de David, diciendo:

And the Lord spake unto Gad, David's seer, saying,

10 « Ve, habla a David y dile: “Así ha dicho Jehová: Tres cosas te propongo; escoge de ellas una y así haré contigo.”»

Go and tell David, saying, Thus saith the Lord, I offer thee three things: choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee.

11 G ad fue ante David y le dijo: —Así ha dicho Jehová:

So Gad came to David, and said unto him, Thus saith the Lord, Choose thee

12 “ Escoge para ti: tres años de hambre, o tres meses de derrotas ante tus enemigos, con la espada de tus adversarios, o bien tres días durante los cuales la espada de Jehová y la peste recorran la tierra, y el ángel de Jehová haga destrucción en todos los términos de Israel.” Mira, pues, qué responderé a quien me ha enviado.

Either three years' famine; or three months to be destroyed before thy foes, while that the sword of thine enemies overtaketh thee; or else three days the sword of the Lord, even the pestilence, in the land, and the angel of the Lord destroying throughout all the coasts of Israel. Now therefore advise thyself what word I shall bring again to him that sent me.

13 D avid respondió a Gad: —Estoy en grande angustia. Prefiero caer en la mano de Jehová, porque sus misericordias son muchas en extremo, que caer en manos de los hombres.

And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let me fall now into the hand of the Lord; for very great are his mercies: but let me not fall into the hand of man.

14 E ntonces Jehová envió una peste sobre Israel, y murieron setenta mil hombres.

So the Lord sent pestilence upon Israel: and there fell of Israel seventy thousand men.

15 E nvió Jehová el ángel a Jerusalén para destruirla; pero cuando ya estaba destruyéndola, miró Jehová y se arrepintió de aquel mal, y dijo al ángel que destruía: «¡Basta ya! ¡Detén tu mano!» El ángel de Jehová estaba junto a la era de Ornán, el jebuseo.

And God sent an angel unto Jerusalem to destroy it: and as he was destroying, the Lord beheld, and he repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed, It is enough, stay now thine hand. And the angel of the Lord stood by the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.

16 Y alzando David sus ojos, vio al ángel de Jehová que estaba entre el cielo y la tierra, con una espada desnuda en su mano, extendida contra Jerusalén. Entonces David y los ancianos se postraron sobre sus rostros, vestidos de ropas ásperas.

And David lifted up his eyes, and saw the angel of the Lord stand between the earth and the heaven, having a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders of Israel, who were clothed in sackcloth, fell upon their faces.

17 Y dijo David a Dios: —¿No soy yo el que hizo contar al pueblo? Yo mismo soy el que pequé, y ciertamente he hecho mal; pero estas ovejas, ¿qué han hecho? Jehová Dios mío, caiga ahora tu mano sobre mí, y sobre la casa de mi padre, pero no envíes la peste sobre tu pueblo.

And David said unto God, Is it not I that commanded the people to be numbered? even I it is that have sinned and done evil indeed; but as for these sheep, what have they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, O Lord my God, be on me, and on my father's house; but not on thy people, that they should be plagued.

18 E l ángel de Jehová ordenó a Gad decirle a David que subiera y construyera un altar a Jehová en la era de Ornán, el jebuseo.

Then the angel of the Lord commanded Gad to say to David, that David should go up, and set up an altar unto the Lord in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.

19 Y David subió, conforme a la orden que Gad le había dado en nombre de Jehová.

And David went up at the saying of Gad, which he spake in the name of the Lord.

20 A l volverse Ornán, que estaba trillando el trigo, vio al ángel, y los cuatro hijos que estaban con él se escondieron.

And Ornan turned back, and saw the angel; and his four sons with him hid themselves. Now Ornan was threshing wheat.

21 C uando David llegó adonde estaba Ornán, éste miró y vio a David; entonces salió de la era y se postró en tierra ante David.

And as David came to Ornan, Ornan looked and saw David, and went out of the threshingfloor, and bowed himself to David with his face to the ground.

22 L uego dijo David a Ornán: —Dame este lugar de la era, para que edifique un altar a Jehová; dámelo por su cabal precio, para que cese la mortandad en el pueblo.

Then David said to Ornan, Grant me the place of this threshingfloor, that I may build an altar therein unto the Lord: thou shalt grant it me for the full price: that the plague may be stayed from the people.

23 R espondió Ornán a David: —Tómala para ti, y haga mi señor, el rey, lo que bien le parezca. Yo daré los bueyes para el holocausto, trillos para leña y trigo para la ofrenda. Yo lo doy todo.

And Ornan said unto David, Take it to thee, and let my lord the king do that which is good in his eyes: lo, I give thee the oxen also for burnt offerings, and the threshing instruments for wood, and the wheat for the meat offering; I give it all.

24 R eplicó el rey David a Ornán: —No, todo quiero comprarlo por su justo precio; porque no tomaré para Jehová lo que es tuyo, ni sacrificaré holocausto que nada me cueste.

And king David said to Ornan, Nay; but I will verily buy it for the full price: for I will not take that which is thine for the Lord, nor offer burnt offerings without cost.

25 Y dio David a Ornán por aquel lugar la suma de seiscientos siclos de oro.

So David gave to Ornan for the place six hundred shekels of gold by weight.

26 D avid edificó allí un altar a Jehová, en el que ofreció holocaustos y ofrendas de paz e invocó a Jehová, quien le respondió por fuego desde los cielos en el altar del holocausto.

And David built there an altar unto the Lord, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings, and called upon the Lord; and he answered him from heaven by fire upon the altar of burnt offering.

27 E ntonces Jehová habló al ángel, y éste volvió su espada a la vaina.

And the Lord commanded the angel; and he put up his sword again into the sheath thereof.

28 A l ver David que Jehová lo había oído en la era de Ornán, el jebuseo, ofreció sacrificios allí.

At that time when David saw that the Lord had answered him in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite, then he sacrificed there.

29 P ues el tabernáculo de Jehová que Moisés había hecho en el desierto, y el altar del holocausto, estaban entonces en el lugar alto de Gabaón;

For the tabernacle of the Lord, which Moses made in the wilderness, and the altar of the burnt offering, were at that season in the high place at Gibeon.

30 p ero David no pudo ir allá a consultar a Dios, porque estaba atemorizado a causa de la espada del ángel de Jehová.

But David could not go before it to enquire of God: for he was afraid because of the sword of the angel of the Lord.
