1 M ejor es la buena fama que el buen perfume, y mejor el día de la muerte que el día del nacimiento.

A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one's birth.

2 M ejor es ir a la casa del luto que a la casa del banquete, porque aquello es el fin de todos los hombres, y el que vive lo tendrá presente en su corazón.

It is better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the house of feasting: for that is the end of all men; and the living will lay it to his heart.

3 M ejor es el pesar que la risa, porque con la tristeza del rostro se enmienda el corazón.

Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better.

4 E l corazón de los sabios está en la casa del luto, mas el corazón de los insensatos, en la casa donde reina la alegría.

The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.

5 M ejor es oír la reprensión del sabio que la canción de los necios,

It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools.

6 p orque la risa del necio es como el crepitar de los espinos debajo de la olla. Y también esto es vanidad.

For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool: this also is vanity.

7 C iertamente la opresión hace enloquecer al sabio, y las dádivas corrompen el corazón.

Surely oppression maketh a wise man mad; and a gift destroyeth the heart.

8 M ejor es el fin del negocio que su principio; mejor es el sufrido de espíritu que el altivo de espíritu.

Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.

9 N o te apresures en tu espíritu a enojarte, porque el enojo reposa en el seno de los necios.

Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.

10 N unca digas: «¿Cuál es la causa de que los tiempos pasados fueron mejores que estos?», porque nunca hay sabiduría en esta pregunta.

Say not thou, What is the cause that the former days were better than these? for thou dost not enquire wisely concerning this.

11 B uena es la ciencia con herencia, y provechosa para los que ven el sol;

Wisdom is good with an inheritance: and by it there is profit to them that see the sun.

12 p orque escudo es la ciencia y escudo es el dinero; pero más ventajosa es la sabiduría, porque da vida a sus poseedores.

For wisdom is a defence, and money is a defence: but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom giveth life to them that have it.

13 M ira la obra de Dios. ¿Quién podrá enderezar lo que él torció?

Consider the work of God: for who can make that straight, which he hath made crooked?

14 E n el día del bien goza del bien, y en el día de la adversidad, reflexiona. Dios hizo tanto el uno como el otro, a fin de que el hombre no sepa qué trae el futuro.

In the day of prosperity be joyful, but in the day of adversity consider: God also hath set the one over against the other, to the end that man should find nothing after him.

15 T odo esto he visto en los días de mi vanidad. Justo hay que perece pese a su justicia, y hay malvado que pese a su maldad alarga sus días.

All things have I seen in the days of my vanity: there is a just man that perisheth in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man that prolongeth his life in his wickedness.

16 N o seas demasiado justo, ni sabio en exceso; ¿por qué habrás de destruirte?

Be not righteous over much; neither make thyself over wise: why shouldest thou destroy thyself ?

17 N o quieras hacer mucho mal, ni seas insensato; ¿por qué habrás de morir antes de tu tiempo?

Be not over much wicked, neither be thou foolish: why shouldest thou die before thy time?

18 B ueno es que tomes esto, sin apartar de aquello tu mano; porque el que teme a Dios saldrá bien de todo.

It is good that thou shouldest take hold of this; yea, also from this withdraw not thine hand: for he that feareth God shall come forth of them all.

19 L a sabiduría fortalece al sabio más que diez poderosos que haya en una ciudad.

Wisdom strengtheneth the wise more than ten mighty men which are in the city.

20 C iertamente no hay en la tierra hombre tan justo, que haga el bien y nunca peque.

For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.

21 T ampoco apliques tu corazón a todas las cosas que se dicen, para que no oigas a tu siervo cuando habla mal de ti;

Also take no heed unto all words that are spoken; lest thou hear thy servant curse thee:

22 p orque tu corazón sabe que tú también hablaste mal de otros muchas veces.

For oftentimes also thine own heart knoweth that thou thyself likewise hast cursed others.

23 T odas estas cosas probé con sabiduría, diciendo: «¡Seré sabio!»; pero la sabiduría se apartó de mí.

All this have I proved by wisdom: I said, I will be wise; but it was far from me.

24 Y a está lejos lo que fue; y lo muy profundo, ¿quién lo hallará?

That which is far off, and exceeding deep, who can find it out?

25 M e volví entonces, y apliqué mi corazón a saber, examinar y buscar la sabiduría y la razón, para conocer la maldad de la insensatez y el desvarío del error.

I applied mine heart to know, and to search, and to seek out wisdom, and the reason of things, and to know the wickedness of folly, even of foolishness and madness:

26 Y más amarga que la muerte he hallado a la mujer cuyo corazón es trampas y redes, y sus manos ligaduras. El que agrada a Dios escapará de ella, pero el pecador queda en ella preso.

And I find more bitter than death the woman, whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands as bands: whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her.

27 H e aquí, dice el Predicador, que pesando las cosas una por una para dar con la razón de ellas,

Behold, this have I found, saith the preacher, counting one by one, to find out the account:

28 h e hallado lo que aún busca mi alma, sin haberlo encontrado: Un hombre entre mil he hallado, pero ni una sola mujer entre todas.

Which yet my soul seeketh, but I find not: one man among a thousand have I found; but a woman among all those have I not found.

29 H e aquí, solamente esto he hallado: que Dios hizo al hombre recto, pero él se buscó muchas perversiones.

Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions.
